Dean Koontz Talks Odd Thomas Movie; It’s Good News

9 May 2012 9:23 PM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

If you’re a fan of the Dean Koontz series, Odd Thomas, then you may know that the first book, aptly named Odd Thomas, has been made into a movie by director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) and is currently in post-production. If you haven’t read the books, here’s the gist of things:

“The dead don’t talk. I don’t know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. Maybe he has a gift, maybe it’s a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the »

Brendan Fraser Files Lawsuit Against New Movie Bosses

9 May 2012 6:36 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Brendan Fraser has filed a $3 million (£1.8 million) lawsuit against the makers of a new movie about William Tell, amid allegations the planned project has failed to materialise.

The Mummy actor claims producer Todd Moyer hired him to star in The Legend of William Tell: 3D early last year, with the shoot scheduled to begin in October.

Fraser alleges he passed up on several lucrative jobs to commit to the project - which is reportedly still in pre-production due to financing issues.

The actor has now taken legal action and filed papers at Los Angeles County Superior Court, demanding a $2.25 million (£1.4 million) payout he insists he's entitled to whether the film shoots or not. He's also asking for additional damages, taking the amount to $3 million, reports TMZ.com.

However, Moyer is stunned by the legal action because he's adamant the project is still on, telling the website, "This is the first I have heard of this lawsuit. As we told Mr. Fraser's reps, we are ready, willing and able to make the movie for the September 3rd start date. (Producer) Julius Nasso and I have the movie fully financed.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Fraser does not seem to be interested in making the movie as a 2D film as the producers intend to do. This is not a contractual decision Mr. Fraser has the ability to make." »

New G.I. Joe: Retaliation posters arrive online

9 May 2012 1:54 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Here at Flickering Myth, we've got high hopes that the upcoming action sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation will go some way to erasing the memory of the Joes' first big-screen outing in Stephen Sommers' G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. With a C.V that includes Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, incoming director Jon M. Chu may not have been the most obvious choice to take over the reins, but he's overseen near-wholesale changes to series, including the addition of A-list acting talent such as Dwayne Johnson (Fast & Furious 5) and Bruce Willis (Die Hard) - both of whom feature prominently in the latest wave of promotional posters from the sequel.

Based upon what we've seen so far, it's obvious that The Rock is set to be the star attraction in Retaliation and the UK poster (released via Empire) only serves to confirm this, »

Universal has signed a new two-year deal with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and their K/O Paper Products production company. The first two films out the gate will be reboots of Universal properties The Mummy and Van Helsing. Their writing credits include two Transformers movies and the Star Trek reboot as well as the much maligned Cowboys & Aliens. On the TV side, they created the underrated Fringe and produce the Hawaii Five-0 reboot.

The set-bound 4th Doctor Who story of season 7 -a probable bottle-episode due to so much expensive location shooting for episodes 1, 2, 3 and 5- is confirmed to be a story that brings back Unit and involves Henry VIII and his wife Catherine. Stephen Blything and Law & Order: UK’s Jemma Redgrave has been cast in those roles. The episode has a working title of Cubed.

Tom Cruise attached to Van Helsing reboot

2 May 2012 10:38 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Tom Cruise adds to his busy work schedule with a new take on Van Helsing, with a script written by Kurtzman and Orci...

The 2004 Van Helsing, starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Stephen Sommers wasn't a critical hit, so I don’t expect that this remake/reboot/re-whatever will face the same level of scorn that greets the majority of such projects these days, particularly given the promise the material has.

The new take on the material has been on the cards for quite some time with Guillermo del Toro linked, which is understandable given the nature of the material, and back then Tom Cruise was rumoured to be his choice for leading man so he must have been very interested given that he’s looking to produce and star in this new version.

Cruise seems a good fit for the material and having him on board will likely open »

Universal Signs Kurtzman and Orci to Remake The Mummy and Van Helsing

2 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

The brilliant minds of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci that brought us Fringe, 2009’s Star Trek movie, and nearly a television adaptation of Joe Hill’s comic book series Locke and Key have been tasked with remaking two well known titles from Universal’s library.

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has signed the duo and their K/O Paper Products banner for a two-year deal in which they will begin with remaking The Mummy and Van Helsing. Now, this news follows up our report earlier this month that Universal Pictures had enlisted Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts to take a stab at the script. Kurtzman and Orci will be working with Spaihts and Mummy franchise producer Sean Daniel to remake The Mummy.

The remake of Van Helsing curiously has Tom Cruise attached to it. Cruise? As monster-hunter Van Helsing? Well, he did surprise me with his performance as Lestat so maybe he will do so again. »

"Trek" Scribes Reboot "Mummy" & "Van Helsing"

1 May 2012 9:19 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Stephen Sommers just got kicked in the ego. More importantly where's the "Deep Rising" reboot?

Universal Pictures have signed a two-year first-look production deal with "Fringe" creators and "Star Trek"/"Transformers" scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci according to a just issued press release.

The first films of this new deal? Reboots of Sommers' "The Mummy" and "Van Helsing" which are amongst several library titles the pair are reportedly planning to 'reimagine'.

The 'Mummy' reboot has previously been reported on with producer Sean Daniel and writer Jon Spaihts already at work on the project.

Word of 'Helsing' getting another go however is new. The surprise here is that it looks as if Tom Cruise is replacing Hugh Jackman as Cruise is officially attached to star in and produce the film.

Kurtzman and Orci penned the currently shooting "Star Trek" sequel, remain attached to pen a sequel to "The Amazing Spider-Man »

Tom Cruise Will Hunt Monsters In a ‘Van Helsing’ Reboot, and That’s Okay

1 May 2012 1:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It’s easy to have a knee-jerk reaction to news of remakes and reboots because most film-goers would prefer to see original material hitting the screen. And yes, most reboots are unecessary cash-grabs that ultimately pale beside the original. But sometimes you need to pause, take a breath and take a look at the details. Variety is reporting that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are developing a reboot of Van Helsing with Tom Cruise attached in the title role. (Cruise has actually been circling the project since 2010 when Guillermo del Toro was toying with the character.) It’s part of the duo’s new two-year deal with Universal where they’ll also be overseeing a reboot of The Mummy. Note the common thread of director Stephen Sommers’ past films which means a reboot of Deep Rising can’t be far behind. So the bad news is that they’re remaking an absolutely terrible movie that’s only »

Universal Inks Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, Taps Tom Cruise for Van Helsing

1 May 2012 12:14 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Universal Studios have inked Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman two a first-look two-year deal. The producer/writers will use the deal to reboot The Mummy and Van Helsing, the latter to star and be co-produced by Tom Cruise.

The 2004 version of Van Helsing starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale was originally conceived to kickstart a new franchise. It fell well short of expectations on all fronts, from the uneven story to the shoddy visual effects to the subpar performances. Tom Cruise has already proven he can carry an action tentpole franchise with Mission Impossible so the stage is set for Van Helsing to become that coveted tentpole franchise instead of another one-off expensive disappointment.

For The Mummy reboot, writer Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, The Darkest Hour) is already on board to work with Kurtzman and Orci. It's too early to know if Universal will take a more serious horror approach to »

Tom Cruise to Play Van Helsing in upcoming Reboot from Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci

1 May 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Universal Pictures has just locked writers and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci into a two year deal in which they will work on developing some of the studio's already existing properties. Specifically, Van Helsing and The Mummy, both of which director Stephen Sommers worked on. I guess the studio saw how much better the big screen sequel to G.I. Joe looked without Sommers at the helm and thought, "damn, I bet we could do better with the films he made for us as well!" So they went out an snatched up a couple talented Hollywood writers with a great track record for developing successful films like Star Trek and Transformers.

The press release below also states that Tom Cruise is attached to star in and produce the Van Helsing film. I can see Cruise taking on the role of Helsing. It will be interesting to see what they plan for this story, »

In a Universal Studios announcement of a new deal with hot screenwriting duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci -- the men who crafted the Transformers and Star Trek franchise storylines, (not to mention Mission: Impossible III, Cowboys & Aliens and the new Hawaii Five-0 TV reboot) – it was also revealed that Cruise is attached to produce and star in a new Van Helsing movie, taking over the crossbow from Hugh Jackman.

The 2004 Van Helsing found Jackman battling Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster and The Wolf Man on their home turf of Transylvania in a frenetic, over-the-top CGI spectacle. The updated Cruise version will be a "re-imagining" of the franchise.

Kurtzman and Orci Take on Van Helsing Reboot Starring Tom Cruise

1 May 2012 11:40 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Some two decades after he played the vampire Lestat in Interview with the Vampire, Tom Cruise is apparently thinking about stepping into the shoes of the most famous vampire hunter of all, Bram Stoker's Van Helsing. Universal has been looking to set up a new take on the character ever since Stephen Sommers' 2004 film starring Hugh Jackman drew the ire of both fans and critics alike. Now they are turning to Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the tried and true screenwriting team behind such box office hits as Transformers and Star Trek, in order to make it a reality. The project is part of a new two-year first-look deal that they just signed with Universal -- this despite the fact that their last big movie Cowboys & Aliens was a pretty major flop. Tom Cruise is Van Helsing As Universal Resurrect Film Monsters

1 May 2012 11:19 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Tom Cruise has wanted to play Dracula’s mortal enemy, the original vampire hunter “Van Helsing” on the big screen for a good few years now, and at one point two summers ago got very close to starring in a movie that horror maestro Guillermo Del Toro was to spearhead at Universal. Despite that adaptation not happening because Del Toro exited for other things (namely “At The Mountains of Madness” which also never happened), Cruise has remained attached to the undead property which looks to be getting a new jolt of life.

Deadline reports that Cruise will star and produce a new attempt at a “Van Helsing” movie at the studio that brought Dracula to Hollywood in the first place, this time to be written by screenwriting blockbuster pairing Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
