Fast & Furious costume designer signs on for Captain Marvel

20 October 2017 10:34 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

According to a report from a report by Omega Underground, costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays has signed on for 2019’s 90-set Captain Marvel movie.

With sci-fi franchises like Star Trek: BeyondTotal Recall and Battle Los Angeles, as well as the Fast & Furious franchise and even a Marvel entry with Blade, Hays’ past work speaks for itself. Perhaps Sanja is the perfect eye to bring life to the classic comics design. Of course, her work will also have to include not only the titular character’s famous look, but also costuming for a younger, two-eyed Nick Fury, the organisation of S.H.I.E.L.D. and for the first time ever, the intergalactic species of the Skrulls.

Presumably Hays was chosen for her experience in sci-fi in particular, as Captain Marvel is said to be set primarily in outer space requiring a level of unique imagination. The film is »

17 October 2017 11:06 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Standing in the bay of a speeding Wakandan jet, a member of the African nation's special forces unit – the Dora Milaje – advises their king, T'Challa: "Don't freeze." Calmly, the leader replies "I never freeze." He's assured, regal, radiating a near subzero-temperature sense of cool. And then, donning the mask of the legendary superhero known as the Black Panther, he torpedo drops from the sky. A car explodes beneath him. He effortlessly somersaults through the air, lands sideways on a building in a neon-lit metropolis, races along the building's wall and »

Awarded titles suggest a balance between the author-driven, arthouse genre with supernatural elements – such as The Match Factory’s “Jupiter’s Moon,” an existential supernatural thriller with black comedy touches exploring immigrant crisis, terrorism, and the West’s loss of values –   and features closely linked to more traditional genres and sub-genres like revenge thrillers and horror Westerns. Notably, two main category awards went to movies directed or co-directed by women. French-Brazilian “As Boas Maneiras” directed by Jualiana Rojas and Marco Dutra won the Critics Award.

Sold by Paris’ Charades and premiering at Toronto’s Midnight Madness, Coralie Fargeat’s feature debut’s “Revenge,” a stylish rape-revenge horror thriller, took best director Fargeat snagged the Citizen Kane Award for an up-and-coming director.

Jason Momoa's Crow Remake Gets Revived at Sony

1 September 2017 1:07 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After languishing in development for years at Relativity Media, which has been going through bankruptcy proceedings, The Crow reboot has finally found a new studio home. Sony Pictures has acquired the distribution rights, which comes almost a year after Samuel Hadida's Davis Films teamed up with the Highland Film Group and Electric Shadow to finance the film. Despite the project changing studios, it is believed that star Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy may still be involved in the project.

Deadline reports that this reboot, which was given the new title The Crow Reborn last year, is expected to keep star Jason Momoa attached as Eric Draven, with Corin Hardy, who has been attached to direct since December 2014, reportedly still on board as well. While nothing is official regarding the director and star remaining on board, Corin Hardy sent out a photo on Instagram earlier this month with Jason Momoa, »

Frightfest 2017: ‘Leatherface’ Review: Dirs. Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo

Leatherface Review: The Texas chainsaw wielding monster Leatherface gets an origin story in the latest franchise instalment. Leatherface Review

Leatherface, like his iconic horror counterpart’s Freddy Krueger and Hannibal Lecter, has been featured in a huge number of sequels over the years. The original 1974 masterpiece shocked the world, and went down as one of the most terrifying slasher movies of all time. Unfortunately for the Sawyer family, the deranged cannibals have never managed to reach the same heights. Now, it’s time for the inevitable origin story for Jed Sawyer and his chainsaw wielding alter ego. How does the film hold up against the original? And, more importantly, is it an improvement on the plethora of sequels, reboots, and prequels we’ve already been subjected to?

Few fans were holding out hope for the newest entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. Each new instalment appears to share more »

Review: Final Recall (2017)

18 August 2017 11:40 PM, PDT | The Cultural Post | See recent The Cultural Post news »

After a brief opening scene in space where an incident affects two astronauts, Final Recall begins on familiar ground with a cabin in the woods style horror, as five friends take a vacation. With no preconceptions regarding the dangers of snooping, they find themselves stumbling into trouble with a local woodlander called Hunter (Wesley Snipes), whom they only just manage to avoid. Retreating to the safety of their cabin, it is not long before a mysterious storm starts to appear in the sky. It’s going to be a long night and they will soon realise there are worse things to fear in the woods.

Final Recall has some interesting ideas but with the film constantly changing, it’s difficult to know what they are trying to achieve. The first part of the film works well as a horror, with plenty of tension building between the group and Hunter due to their own naivety. »

Our latest round-up of horror and genre DVDs and Blu-rays...

So: with season two of Stranger Things fast approaching, a remake of Stephen King’s It set to mildly trouble a whole new generation and, erm, the on-going threat of nuclear armageddon, it seems everything eighties is 'in' at the moment. And, you know what? That surely must include Dennis Quaid, right? Well, maybe not, unless you count this year’s canine reincarnation/multiple hound-homicide horror A Dog’s Purpose, which we don’t in these parts. Anyway, Quaid’s back in Blu-ray form with the recent repackaging of his 1984 quirky fantasy thriller Dreamscape.

Nicely sandwiched between the release of Jaws 3-D and Enemy Mine, surely two of the most Quaidessential (sorry) films of the decade, Dreamscape sees our hero take on the mantle of a cheaper Harrison Ford, burdened with psychic powers that he must use »
