Edward Furlong, 'Terminator 2' Star, Arrested Again

17 May 2013 8:27 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Edward Furlong, star of "Terminator 2" and "American History X," was arrested last night for violating a restraining order his ex-girlfriend filed against him, according to TMZ. The troubled, 35-year-old actor has been arrested twice before, TMZ reports, for domestic violence charges involving the same woman. He was sentenced to six months in jail in March on the same charges, but didn't serve the full term. This time, when police arrived at his ex's home in West Hollywood, they found Furlong hiding under a stairwell close to her home. Furlong was later taken into custody and charged with a felony. He's now being held on $100,000 bail. [via TMZ] »

5 Great Films That Defined The 90s

10 April 2013 8:47 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

The 1990s was a huge decade for history: The Soviet Union fell in 1991, paving way for radical political change across Europe; one of the worst genocides known to man took place in Rwanda between the Hutus and the Tutsis; and of course there was the small matter of  the invention of the world wide web.

It was a decade of social change coupled with advances in technology and it made for an interesting backdrop for the film industry, which continued to produce some astonishingly good films after the success of the 80s.

So here they are in all their glory, five of the films that defined the 1990s.

Spoiler Warning:  this article may contain some spoilers.

5. American History X (1998)

'Carrie' Director Kimberly Peirce To Helm Aryan Brotherhood Drama 'The Brand'

2 April 2013 5:54 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So, what's scarier than a bullied high school teenager with a chip on her shoulder and revenge on her mind? Meatheaded racists. But for "Carrie" director Kimberly Pierce she's taking on something that might be her most provocative movie yet, which is saying something considering she's the filmmaker behind transgendered drama "Boys Don't Cry" and Iraq war flick "Stop-Loss." Deadline reports that Peirce will helm "The Brand," a drama based on the true story of the Aryan Brotherhood. David Grann's 2004 New Yorker article "Annals Of Crime" served as the basis of the script by "The Messenger" scribe Alessandro Camon (who rewrote the first draft by Ric Roman Waugh) and it tells the story of the Brotherhood's influence in the prison system, their networked organization orders hits and maintains order, even as U.S. prosecutors try take them down for their illegal activities. Perhaps like "American History X," the film »

American History X Review

1 April 2013 4:13 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

If you want American History X summarised in one line, here it is: it makes you sympathise with a Nazi and is more hard-hitting than any cinematic piece about race-hatred produced before.

Taking place in earlier 90s’ USA, the film revolves around Neo-Nazi Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), the psychotic prodigy of a white-power group leader (rather forgettably played by Stacy Keach), and his younger brother Danny Vinyard (Edward Furlong). The story starts with Norton being arrested for manslaughter after killing three minorities trying to steal his car, an act that makes him a hero among his fellow anti-Semitics and causes his younger brother to fall ever deeper into their hate filled world.

Chronology is then abandoned as Furlong’s character is forced by his school to write an essay (entitled American History X) about what led to his brother going to prison,  a last ditched attempt »

Clip joint: the best unhappy endings

21 March 2013 5:31 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Earlier this month John Carvill wrote about the best Hollywood happy endings. This week we've flipped the structure on its head: which film finales have left you feeling unhappy?

If you subscribe to the view that happy endings are too often used to satisfy audiences, there's a good chance you'll revel in endings that offer the complete opposite. Why conform to generating cheery satisfaction on a mass scale when you can leave audiences stunned, disgusted or bewildered? Some of Hollywood's most powerful final scenes are also some of the most emotionally unsettling.

1. The Wicker Man

The twisted demise of our innocent protagonist in The Wicker Man (1973) comes as a tremendously shocking blow, even for a horror/thriller. As the agonising final scene unravels, the possibility of Edward Woodward's character, Howie, escaping from this deadly situation, hits: he's not getting out alive.

2. American History X
