Trivia

The lava was primarily made of methylcellulose, the thickening agent used in fast-food milkshakes.
The ash was made mostly of ground newspaper.
Most of the fire trucks used in the movie were made by the Crown Corporation, a fire apparatus maker now closed down. The Crown fire trucks in the movie can be easily recognized by the double-vertical headlights.

In the intervening years since the movie, the LA Metro has indeed been working towards extending subway service to Beverly Hills, albeit on its Purple Line rather than its Red Line as depicted. One of the proposed stops is at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, where they dammed the lava flow along the Miracle Mile.

An elaborate miniaturized portion of the doomed city, which was destroyed as the lava flowed, was constructed inside hangar #1 at the San Bernardino International Airport.
