Too much 'Heaven' for competition

16 September 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Young girls are the most coveted demographic at the boxoffice again this weekend. Although they arrived in droves last weekend to help Screen Gems' The Exorcism of Emily Rose open to $30 million, they are not looking as passionate about the romantic comedy Just Like Heaven, starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, which opens Friday. The PG-13 DreamWorks Pictures film is likely to top the boxoffice. Centering on a lonely architect who falls in love with the spirit of a woman who lived in his San Francisco apartment, Heaven is from director Mark Waters, whose past two films, Mean Girls and Freaky Friday, were hits with preteen girls. The film is based on a screenplay from Peter Tolan and Leslie Dixon, who adapted it from Marc Levy's novel If Only It Were True. Industry insiders put the film, which is opening in 3,508 theaters, in the low- to mid-$20 million range. Lions Gate Films is betting on Nicolas Cage's boxoffice draw this weekend in the gritty Lord of War, opening today in 2,814 theaters. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show, Gattaca), Lord centers on an arms dealer who schemes his way to the top of his profession only to come face to face with his conscience. Costarring Ethan Hawke, Monica Bellucci, Jared Leto and Bridget Moynahan, the film has been described as an international action-adventure mixed with a dark satire on the global arms trade. The R-rated film has received mixed reviews and is likely to open in the $10 million-$12 million range. »
