Ingrid Goes West and social media in film

Ingrid Goes West and social media in filmIngrid Goes West and social media in filmAdriana Floridia7/20/2017 12:55:00 Pm

We're living in the age of social media, so it only makes sense that our movies would reflect that too.

Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more are new factors to consider when writing a screenplay. These new methods of communication and connection are changing how characters in films interact. No longer does it really make sense to have the same "meet-cutes" in romantic comedies when the majority of people are meeting through online dating, and characters now might communicate via text message as opposed to calling each other on the phone. These are all new things to consider in film, as movies should be a reflection of our present day reality, unless they're set in another time period.

Then there are films that use social media as their entire premise, »

Contest: Chicago, snuggle up to Brigsby Bear early and for free

The more detail you go into describing the plot of Brigsby Bear—the new comedy from SNL’s Kyle Mooney and Drew McRary, a.k.a. Good Neighbor—the crazier it sounds, but here goes. Brigsby Bear stars Mooney as James, a thirtysomething man-child who lives in a bunker with his parents after an unnamed disaster has left the outside world uninhabitable. His only link to the rest of the world is Brigsby Bear Adventures, a kids’ show that most anyone would be able to figure out is being made especially for James, except James is not most anyone. He’s forced to grapple with this fact when he finds out that his personal post-apocalypse has been a complete lie, and has to readjust to life outside of the bunker with his real family. Think Room meets The Truman Show.

And while we can’t promise that tomorrow’s advance »

Jim Carrey Gives an Amazing Performance In ‘The Bad Batch,’ But He Won’t Talk About It

30 June 2017 9:49 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jim Carrey’s career has zigged and zagged in a number of directions over the years, but he’s never taken a role as strange as the one he tackles in “The Bad Batch.” The actor surfaces early in Ana Lily Amirpour’s dystopian Western, almost unrecognizable beneath a scruffy beard, and never speaks a single word. While he only appears in a handful of scenes, The Hermit is one of a few memorably outlandish characters in Amirpour’s dark vision, a silent, nomadic figure who roams the desert with a shopping cart and winds up rescuing the film’s amputee heroine (Suki Waterhouse) after she escapes a gang of cannibals.

This cool and risky performance is a world away from the hyperbolic delivery of Ace Ventura, and suggests the physicality of slapstick comedy folded into a post-apocalyptic milieu. But so far, Carrey hasn’t said a word about it. »

Ed Harris’ ‘Westworld’ Turn Was A Perfect Late-Career Move For One of Our Best Actors — Career Watch

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Ed Harris, who’s doing what he’s always done: owning character roles in film, theater and television.

Bottom Line: Harris has an iconic masculine American gravitas. The camera loves him and you can count on Harris to deliver a character’s emotional spine with subtle and sturdy grace. That’s why this hard-working actor never falls out of demand. And he seemingly can do anything, whether stalwart hero (John Glenn in “The Right Stuff” or the Mission Control voice in “Apollo 13” or “Gravity”) or contemptible villain (see “The Firm,” “Enemy at the Gates,” “Swing Shift,” or “The Rock”).

Director Peter Weir (“The Truman Show,” “The Way Back”) once told me that shooting Harris is “spiritual, a man that has a past and regrets, »

Brigsby Bear review – The Truman Show meets Room in overly whimsical comedy

25 May 2017 8:25 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A children’s TV show produced for an audience of one – a kidnap victim – pushes the narrative plausibility, but that won’t stop it becoming a festival hit

Inevitably evoking comparisons with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Room, The Truman Show, Dogtooth and Bad Boy Bubby (but not as funny, sincere, resonant, original or weird, respectively, as any of the above), whimsical comedy Brigsby Bear revolves around a young man named James (Kyle Mooney) who has been raised in a desert bunker by Ted and April (Mark Hamill and Jane Adams) ever since they kidnapped him when he was a baby. Ted and April tell him that the air outside is toxic, breathable only through a gas mask, but they can all survive so long as James keeps topping up the bicycle-powered electric generator and doing his maths homework. Sort of like a Steiner school but without the organic food and self-righteousness. »

Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes Adaptation Set To Premiere This August

11 May 2017 3:18 PM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Yet another Stephen King novel is set to get the TV treatment. While folks may be more dead set on seeing some of Stephen King’s older work — like It, The Dark Tower, Firestarter, or The Mist — on the big and small screen, we can’t forget that the dude’s been writing pretty great novels in recent years as well. Most recently, King’s put out a trilogy of hard-boiled detective novels. The stories started with Mr. Mercedes, continued with Finder Keepers, and concluded with End of Watch.

We’ve known for some time that the first book would be adapted for the small screen, but after being announced, back-burnered, and then brought back to the fold, it became easy to lose track over what the actual status of the project was. Now, Audience Network has announced that the 10-episode limited series has a premiere date of Wednesday, August »

‘The Circle’: 5 Reasons Why Tom Hanks and Emma Watson’s Movie Bombed
