Tribeca Film Review: Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in ‘The Circle’

26 April 2017 11:31 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Circle” is a swankly sinister little mind teaser of a thriller. It’s a nightmare vision of what digital culture is turning all of us into, with all of our help. The movie, adapted from Dave Eggers’ 2013 novel and directed by James Ponsoldt (“The End of the Tour”), is about a corporation called The Circle that stores massive amounts of data — financial, medical, social, personal — about each of the account holders who belong to it. The company, based in the Bay Area, knows everything there is to know about you — but it’s all for your own convenience! You could call “The Circle” a dystopian thriller, yet it’s not the usual boilerplate sci-fi about grimly abstract oppressors lording it over everyone else. The movie is smarter and creepier than that; it’s a cautionary tale for the age of social-media witch hunts and compulsive oversharing. The fascist digital »

Exclusive Interview – Owen Michael Johnson and John Pearson discuss Beast Wagon

5 April 2017 9:17 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With their critically acclaimed series wrapping up with latest issue, “Finale”, Beast Wagon creators Owen Michael Johnson and John Pearson discuss their unique vision and inspirations…

Like a stampede running rampant in a public zoo, the arrival of Beast Wagon two years ago took comic fans with surprise – and it’s one they won’t soon forget.  Surreal, demented, peppered with dark humour and layered with social commentary, Changeling Studios’ bonkers odyssey is not only original, but it’s reflective of the troubling times we’ve faced in recent years – as well as the possible dark period ahead.  An effective piece art, Beast Wagon taps into collective fears, anxieties and frustrations felt in the current socio-political climate, while, at the same time, manages to lure us into a world unlike anything else.  Bold, thought provoking and wholly original, it’s a must have for any serious comic aficionados collection.  Recently, »

41 trailer scenes that didn’t make the final film

6 February 2017 3:24 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Rob Leane Feb 10, 2017

Star Wars, Terminator 2, Fantastic Beasts and more: they all have scenes in the trailer, that never made the final film...

More often than you might think, scenes that appear in movie trailer don’t turn up in the finished film. This can leave trailer-loving audience members confused as the credits roll, wondering if they dropped off and missed something important.

A couple of massive movies have done this recently, and the internet has been quick to fill in the blanks with speculation. Fingers have been pointed at tinkering studio bigwigs and extensive reshoots, when the reality is often a little less dramatic: filmmakers always chop some footage in the edit, and they rarely have much involvement in the trailers. »

Under The Sun Documentary Screening at Webster University This Weekend

22 January 2017 8:04 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Under The Sun screens Friday January 27th through Sunday January 29th at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood). The movie starts at 7:30 all three evenings.

After years of negotiation the Russian director Vitaly Mansky was invited by the North Korean government to make a film about one girl and her family in the year she prepares to join the Children’s Union, on the ‘Day of the Shining Star’ (Kim Jong-Il’s birthday).  “My father says that Korea is the most beautiful country…” says eight-year-old Zin-mi. And so it might seem as Mansky films her in joyous, patriotic school pageants and in dance class, or with her parents, eating delicious food in their picturesque apartment. But the government handlers supervising the production did not realize that Mansky kept filming even after they had shouted, “Cut.” Under The Sun is the jaw-dropping result.

13 phobias on film for Friday the 13th13 phobias on film for Friday the 13thSasha James1/13/2017 9:05:00 Am

Did you know that “paraskavedekatriaphobia” is the fear of Friday the 13th?

Instead of the usual breakdown of the Friday the 13th movies that you’re probably used to, we decided to celebrate this Friday the 13th with a write-up of phobias and the movies that we most associate with them. Yes, we could have picked Arachnophobia for arachnophobia, but we tried to be at least a little bit more creative.

Check out our list below, and let us know if you can think up better movies to represent the below phobias.

Panphobia (Fear of Everything) – What About Bob?

You can’t talk about phobias without talking about Bob Wiley. In Frank Oz’s 90s classic What About Bob?, Bill Murray plays the multiphobic patient of Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss). He’s afraid of everything: buses, »

Jim Carrey: a salute to his darker roles

9 January 2017 12:40 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Robin Bell Jan 13, 2017

Jim Carrey proved his acting range in the late 90s and 2000s. We salute the likes of The Truman Show, The Cable Guy and Man On The Moon.

You know you're a fan of something when that fandom is put to the test. Did you stick with Community when Dan Harmon wasn't writing it? During the barren 90s did you cling onto the hope that Doctor Who would return and be fantastic? Those moments when your patience and perseverance are tested are what make the privilege of being a fan important.
