From King Kong to Avatar, from Star Wars to Lord of the Rings, movie creatures have never been as popular as they are today! Yet the art of creating monsters for the big screen is as old as cinema itself…

Based on interviews of all the greatest artists in the genre and hours of exclusive footage from classics like Gremlins, The Abyss, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers, Spider-Man 2…, the documentary focuses on the stunning relationship between the creatures and their makers: like modern Frankensteins, special effects wizards create life out of raw material, »

Paul Verhoeven has a unique talent for getting a rise out of audiences. RoboCop is a goofy action movie…that is also about the inner rot eating away at American culture. Paul Verhoeven Reveals Why the ‘RoboCop’ and ‘Total Recall’ Remakes Failed

18 September 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

After a 10-year absence, Paul Verhoeven has returned to feature filmmaking with “Elle.” The controversial filmmaker’s latest has been widely acclaimed since premiering at Cannes earlier this year, and in the leadup to its imminent theatrical release he’s had the chance to talk about such earlier works as “RoboCop” and “Total Recall.” Both films have recently been remade, and Verhoeven has a theory as to why these new takes were unsuccessful: “They take these somewhat absurd stories and make them much too serious.”

“I think that is a mistake,” he continues in an interview with Collider. “Both those movies needed the distance of satire or comedy to situate it for audiences. Playing it straight without any humour is a problem and not an improvement.” Verhoeven’s films have long been »

Robocop Reboot Made One Big Mistake Says Original Director

13 September 2016 12:58 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Next year marks the 30th Anniversary of the original sci-fi action classic Robocop, but don't expect the fans to make the 2014 reboot a part of the celebration. The dastardly remake, starring Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy/Robocop, failed to impress audiences and critics alike, and filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, who directed the original movie, seems to know why. The filmmaker revealed in a recent interview that the reboot made one fatal flaw that may have turned the movie around, if corrected.

Paul Verhoeven hasn't made a studio project since 2000's Hollow Man, but both his Robocop and Total Recall movies have already been rebooted, with a Starship Troopers remake currently in development. His next film, the dark comedy Elle, recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, ahead of its theatrical release on November 11. During an interview with Collider, the filmmaker was asked if he ever watched the Robocop reboot or the Total Recall reboot. »

‘Crunch Time’ Review: Rooster Teeth’s Sci-Fi Comedy Is ‘Inception’ With Nerd-Bros

10 September 2016 1:03 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

After solidly tackling the post-apocalyptic thriller with “Day 5,” Rooster Teeth takes a swing at the science-fiction comedy genre with its second, “Crunch Time,” and hits it out of the park once again.

Starring five lovable weirdos as eccentric science students, “Crunch Time” clips along at a breakneck pace, seamlessly weaving wacky gags and colorful characters into its intriguing plot exposition. From the discomfort of an interrogation room, the characters in “Crunch Time” recount the shenanigans that got them handcuffed to a metal desk answering to two steely-faced detectives. (Brett Morrin and “True Detective’s” Michael Hyatt, no less). The motley crew explains the origins of “the brain-frame,” a “machine that allows you to place yourself inside another person’s mind.”

Tiff 2016. Correspondences #1

9 September 2016 9:54 PM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

I, Daniel BlakeDear Danny,Has it already been a year since we last exchanged notes and opinions on the film festival circuit? Toronto in September is this movie lover’s favorite place and time, and, despite a literally damp start (out of the airport and right into an abrupt, monsoon-style downpour), the appetite for discovery remains as insatiable as ever. Tiff for me has always been an escape—not just from my very non-cinephile work but also from the limitations of the multiplex, where hackneyed would-be blockbuster follows hackneyed would-be blockbuster in a seldom interrupted procession of mediocrity. The range and variety of festivals function as heartening correctives, reminders, as a friend recently and succinctly put it in response to yet another cinema-is-dead pronouncement, that movies aren’t just Hollywood or just what can be seen right now. I’m often anxious as I enter Tiff, yet I always leave it in euphoria, »

‘Elle’ Exclusive Clip: Isabelle Huppert Takes Revenge On An Attacker In Paul Verhoeven’s Latest Thriller

8 September 2016 2:43 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Paul Verhoeven’s latest film “Elle,” his first in ten years, divided critics after its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival due to its provocative subject matter. The film follows Michèle LeBlanc (Isabelle Huppert), head of a successful video game company, who is raped in her home by an unknown assailant and soon stalks and becomes obsessed with her attacker.

IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn describes it as a “lighthearted comedy about rape” and says that “Verhoeven has crafted a defiant tale about the ultimate antidote for fear lying in the ability to turn it into something else.” The film has been making the festival rounds before its U.S. release date in November. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Duncan Jones shares his frustrations with Warcraft, rules out a director’s cut

30 August 2016 3:34 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite proving a hit in China, Warcraft didn’t quite manage to click with the majority of Western audiences, and failed to replicate the success of its video game counterpart, grossing just $213 million outside of the Middle Kingdom and seemingly failing to provide the lucrative franchise launchpad that its hopeful “The Beginning” subtitle suggested. During an interview with Thrillist, director Duncan Jones has reflected on the fantasy epic, discussing his frustrations with the final film:

“Trying to make a movie like Warcraft, and trying to do it in a unique way… you get killed by a death of 1,000 cuts. Not just editing cuts. It’s little changes that seem really innocuous. As a filmmaker the only way that I understand how to make a film is holistically. Every choice that I make, whether it is story or character or costume, all works together. Review: ‘Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy Xv’ Makes No Sense Without The Videogame It’s Trying To Sell You

15 August 2016 10:35 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The “Final Fantasy” series is one of the greatest franchises in the (admittedly brief) history of videogames, a saga of non-continuous roleplaying games which — despite its title — shows no signs of stopping or slowing down. Some of the most immersive and well-realized adventures of their kind, these blockbuster entertainments are known for creating dynamic new worlds for players to explore and invariably save.

But moviegoers, especially those who haven’t devoted hours of hours to the videogames, may have much less warm feelings towards the property. Despite standing out on the strength of its characters and storytelling, both previous attempts to stretch the brand to the big screen have been misfires — one merely bad, the other disastrous.

‘Showgirls’ 4K Restoration Trailer: Paul Verhoeven’s Erotic Cult Classic Returns To French Theaters

1 August 2016 9:41 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Simply put, cult classics aren’t made, they’re born. They’re not designed with the intention of becoming hits on the home video or midnight movie markets, they just exist as sincere creative expressions that happen to catch on with audiences and critics after in its initial theatrical run. Case in point: In 1995, director Paul Verhoeven released his erotic drama “Showgirls,” starring Elizabeth Berkeley as a street-smart hitchhikers who heads to Las Vegas to climb the ropes from stripper to showgirl. While she’s there, she’s introduced to the seedy underbelly of the dancing world and comes face to face with marginalization, violence, and exploitation. The film also stars Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”), Gina Gershon (“Bound”), Glenn Plummer (“Speed”), Robert Davi (“Die Hard”), and more.
