This prison thriller that borrows from fortress and demolition man ever so slightly was a real surprise to me, i am a Gary Daniels fan and knowing in advance that he is playing someone without martial arts skill i was not expecting much, but this turned out to be a fairly decent prison drama, the whole film has a certain proffesional look about it that you normally don't see in many of Garys movies, in this it was presented like a big film despite being only $500,000 in budget, and for the most part they manage to hide the fact its painfully cheap. The special effects for a movie this cheap are top draw. The plot centres around Roger Mason who is wrongly convicted of assisting in armed robbery and is sentanced to 1 year in prison he then tries to escape but is caught thanks to a bounty hunter, he is desperate to see his daughter but gets frozen in for 26 years and when he awakens a doctor tells him as untactfully and unsympathetic as you can get that his parents are both dead and that his daughter is now 36, and you really then start to feel for the guy, you could argue that it was stupid of him to break out for only a one year sentance but if your wrongly convicted that is one year too long and he wasn't to know of the fate awaiting him, anyway the film has a rather depressing, no hope of a tone and really makes his situation bleak, the makers wanted to really put this character through hell and not sugar coat it all like alot of films would. Gary Daniels is miscast, but in all fairness in a role that is a test to his acting skills more often than not he does it well, the fights are not in a martial arts style that would have undermined its serious tone so Gary really doesn't do anything impressive stunt wise either, because this is not an action film. The film is good in the way you really feel sorry for the character you want him to see his daughter, and without giving too much away it is sad when he finds her. This could have been worthy of a theatrical release if it was more expensive and had more of an accomplished actor in the lead another case like this was Sixth Day a film with unforfilled potential and poor casting, although Sixth Day was the biggest let down and in fiarness Gary does a slightly better job than Arns cheesy one in Sixth day, i'm not saying its the norm for Arnold, because he has done much better with his acting in other movies. Overall this is a well shot film that for a b-movies at times oozes class, it doesn't get it right all the time but one other thing to add is that this is probably the closed a b-movie has come to making me cry.
