“How lucky are we to get a Coen brothers film so early in the year?,” fellow writer Brian Roan remarked in naming Hail, Caesar! one of our most-anticipated of the year. “Any fan of cinema should be overjoyed at the sound of the name alone, but more reasons to be excited are not in short supply. The story of a studio fixer in Golden Age Hollywood trying to recover a missing star, it plays into all of the metatextual farce that the Coens love so much. And, in keeping with its story, half of Hollywood is starring in this. The anticipation is high and can only get higher, so thank God we don’t have long to wait.”

Updated, 11:15 Am: The mini studio making big moves today confirmed that former Fox and Disney exec Oren Aviv will serve as President and Chief Content Officer, which we told you about first last month. Aviv will oversee motion picture development, production, and marketing at the new film and TV studio, reporting directly to Stx head Robert Simonds.
Aviv and Simonds are prepping to produce and distribute up to 10 star-driven films per year in the $20 million to $60 million budget range. The two first worked together on the Adam Sandler comedy The Waterboy, which Simonds produced and Aviv marketed while at Disney. That’s also the kind of star-centered genre project Stx is focusing on. The duo cite more recent midbudgeted hits The Proposal, The Other Woman, Neighbors, Ride Along, Contraband, Safe House, and 22 Jump Street as examples of the kinds of projects they’re strategically engineering.

Los Angeles — Bruce Willis remains a die-hard at the box office.
Willis' action sequel "A Good Day to Die Hard" debuted as the weekend's top draw with a $25 million debut from Friday to Sunday. The 20th Century Fox release raised its domestic total to $33.2 million since opening Thursday for Valentine's Day to get a jump on the long President's Day weekend.
The movie comes 25 years after the original "Die Hard" and six years after "Live Free or Die Hard," the hit that resurrected the franchise centered on Willis' relentless New York City cop John McClane.
The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Universal's comedy "Identity Thief" starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, was a close second with $23.4 million to lift its haul to $70.7 million.
Debuting at No. 3 with $21.4 million was Relativity Media's romance "Safe Haven," starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel in an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel about a...

<< Continued from "February 2013 Preview"February 14Four nationwide releases crowd in to theaters on Valentine's Day, which falls on Thursday this year. Based on the franchise's track record, odds are A Good Day to Die Hard winds up being the highest-grossing entry, though Beautiful Creatures and Safe Haven also appear to be in decent shape.Over 25 years after John McClane (Bruce Willis) squared off with Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) in the Nakatomi Plaza building, the legendary badass is making his fifth big-screen appearance in A Good Day to Die Hard. By most accounts, the three previous sequels have all failed to live up to the high standard set by the original, but that hasn't stopped audiences from coming back: in 2007, Live Free or Die Hard earned $134.5 million at the domestic box office despite middling reviews and a PG-13 rating. A Good Day to Die Hard is the biggest stretch of the...

Strong ticket sales is welcome news for cinema chains, and marks a benchmark for Joseph Gordon-Levitt in lead role
The winner
Just when it looked as if September was going to go by without a single film opening above £2m, Looper arrives to kick some much-needed life into a sickly UK box office. Its three-day gross of £2.43m is hardly record-shattering, but following a run of films opening around or under £1m – Killing Them Softly, The Sweeney, Dredd, Lawless, Anna Karenina – it is welcome news for the nation's cinema chains. It's also a new benchmark for Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a lead role. Premium Rush recently debuted with a disappointing £115,000 from 159 cinemas. Last November, 50/50, co-starring Seth Rogen, kicked off with £410,000 from 228 venues. In 2009, (500) Days of Summer began its run with £1.24m, including £383,000 in previews. We’re officially halfway through 2012, and if you’re an obsessive box-office junkie like me, that means it’s time to reflect back on the past six months at the movies and give credit to some of the best box-office performances. (Theoretically, it’s also time to think back to box-office disasters like Battleship, John Carter, and That’s My Boy, but we’ll save that for another time…)
There have been loads of strong performers with sensible budgets, so it was difficult to whittle down the slate (sorry, Safe House and Contraband, you were thisclose to making the cut!

Ok, the headline may seem a little over the top, and yes, we have heard this argument many, many times. Unfortunately, however, the necessary people are not listening.
This is not an article merely rehashing the same outrage at the number of sequels on cinema screens this year, it is an exploration of why this has come about, and the great repercussions it may well have on the state of cinema, most specifically Hollywood.
Let me start out by saying I am not a hater of sequels, prequels, reboots or reimagining. I don’t get up in arms about book, video game or cereal packet adaptations. I fully appreciate the love, and need, for franchise based blockbuster filmmaking. The fact is, however, it really has now got out of hand.
So far this year, of the top ten highest grossing movies, eight are based on existing properties. Of these, three...

So are yakuza flicks the hot new trend in Hollywood or are those Far East markets more important than ever? Probably a bit of both. Earlier this year, "Safe House" helmer signed up to direct the yakuza crime flick "The Outsider" at Warner Bros., and now a rival project of sorts is gearing up.
"Warrior" helmer Gavin O'Connor will get behind the camera for the clearly named "Yakuza" for the suits at Universal. Originally penned by Chap Taylor ("Changing Lanes"), with O'Connor and Josh Fagin ("Pride & Glory") to rewrite, the story centers on an American intelligence officer who gets caught up in the post-tsunami underworld of Japan, mixing it up with a yakuza godfather. So yeah, that's pretty vague, but it's all we got for now. O'Connor certainly is no stranger to men squaring off mentally, emotionally or physically and he's a pretty solid choice by producer Brian Grazer to direct the flick.

Despite the fact that The Notebook has essentially been turned into a punchline in today's pop culture landscape, we can't ignore one thing: movies based on Nicholas Sparks books make a lot of money at the box office. Zac Efron's The Lucky One made $22 million last weekend, and that's enough for Relativity Media to give the greenlight to the next in the list of Sparks novels waiting to turn into box office gold. Variety reports that the studio is in talks with Transformers actor Josh Duhamel to star in Safe Haven, an adaptation that will see him playing a widowed father who starts a relationship with a mystery woman. More below! Safe Haven - not to be confused with Denzel's Safe House, or Jason Statham's Safe (what's with the word "safe" in recent movie titles these days?) will be directed by Lasse Hallstrom, someone who, as the director...

"The Hunger Games" continued to dominate the box-office leading the pack for its third-straight weekend. Studio estimates put the Lionsgate action-thriller-romantic drama extravaganza on the top spot with $33.5 million. So far, the film based on the popular Suzanne Collins novel has scored $302.8 million at the box-office, the first 2012 release to crossover the $300 million mark. ("The Hunger Games" movie review)
But the big question still looms large for Lionsgate -- will original director Gary Ross return for the sequel "Hunger Games: Catching Fire?" Apparently, Ross wants more money! I say give it to him! He deserves every penny much as the main cast which will be back for the sequel -- Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), Liam Hemsworth (Gale), and Josh Hutcherson (Peeta). But if Ross does not return, you know who will be cool to direct the sequel? I vote for Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow. She can bring her "Hurt Locker" sensibilities to the sequel,...

The odds seem to be forever in "The Hunger Games'" favor since the movie again won the weekend box office, easily surpassing "American Reunion" and "Titanic 3D" to take the Easter weekend prize.
The Jennifer Lawrence/Josh Hutcherson-starring movie about a dystopian future in which teens fight to the death in an arena grossed $33.5 million in ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo, down from last week's take but still more than enough to bury "American Reunion's" $21.5 million. James Cameron's "Titanic 3D" came in third with $17.4 million at the box office -- respectable, but a far cry from the film's original opening weekend in 1997 when it raked in $28 million and kept going as fans went back to see the film a second and third time.

We all predicted that "The Hunger Games" would take the box-office crown this past weekend but I didn't think we knew just how much! Well, suffice it to say that Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games" was a bonafide box-office bonanza scoring the third-best debut of all time, and the best for any film opening outside of summer! Everyone knew The Hunger Games was going to be big, but how big seemed to be a mystery, but all those questions have been answered as the first film based on the Suzanne Collins trilogy of young adult novels now own the third best opening of all-time. Let's take a closer look... Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 4 Weeks In A Row The Hunger Games When I reported The Hunger Games had brought in $19.7 million from midnight openings alone and then said it should be looking at $150-160 million for the weekend, a lot of commenters didn't agree. My theory was that it wouldn't hit The Dark Knight status, but it would certainly top Twilight franchise status due to a larger demographic appeal. As it turns out that's exactly what happened, and with high CinemaScore ratings it will be interesting to see how this one does next weekend. Anyone care to wager an early guess?...

Who’s hungry? “The Hunger Games” proceeded to predictably beat the stuffing out of the box office, scoring $155 million, the third highest opening weekend in history, and highest for a non-sequel. The fan base came out in full force, no doubt, but so did the normals, as the books don’t (yet) have nearly the support of “Harry Potter” or “Twilight.” But make no mistake, this property had a similar groundswell of opinion, including an ad blitz and news and web coverage suggesting this was the “good” version of those pre-existing properties. Within three days, Lionsgate has their highest grossing domestic release of all time, and Hollywood’s strongest new franchise. Because everyone secretly loves child murder.

For the most part, the first two months of 2012 have lived up to expectations, delivering a few unexpected gems but mostly a lot of forgettable crap. That being said, someone still has to win at the box office, and there have been a handful of success stories throughout these winter weeks. The Vow and Safe House are currently sitting at the top of the charts and The Lorax seems likely to catch them shortly. However, there are a few other hits that might surprise you. In particular, the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island starring The Rock, which is easily the highest international earner so far this year with $271 million and counting. You better believe a sequel is being fast-tracked, along with follow-ups to a couple recent found footage flicks as well. According to THR, New Line has closed deals with director Brad Peyton...

After a brutal year at the box office in 2011, with many seemingly sure-fire mvoies underperforming, the studios have been breathing a sigh of relief in 2012 so far. For each of the nine weekends of 2012, takings at U.S. theaters have been significantly higher than the equivalent weekends in previous years, and two movies -- "The Vow" and "Safe House" -- have already crossed the psychologically vital $100 million barrier, with "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" a dead cert to join them by the end of next weekend.
Even the arrival of tentpole question mark "John Carter" this weekend is unlikely to curb the upswing -- even assuming it opens at the lowest end of estimates, around $25 million, that would still be more than "Limitless," the winner of the equivalent weekend last year. But it's a mark of the current climate that it's the $250 million Disney tentpole that everyone's worried about, whereas...

In their article reporting about the FX network gaining the television rights to the recently released Act Of Valor, Deadline says that the network has also gained the rights for several films that have been released early this year. Among the titles that were picked up included Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance (Neveldine/Taylor's non-sequel to the 2007 film Ghost Rider), Josh Trank's found footage/superhero flick Chronicle, and Tarsem Singh's Immortals (which stars Henry 'Superman' Cavill). In addition, FX has also gained the rights to air the fourth Underworld installment, Underworld Awakening. The network also received the rights for many other releases such as This Means War, Red Tails, Safe House and Contraband. No word on when the movies will air on the network, but expect most (if not all) of these titles to begin their airtime within the next couple years. In the meantime, you can...

It's Oscar weekend and not a single one of the nominees is in the top ten. Last year two of the year's Best Picture nominees, including the eventual Best Picture winner, were in the top ten and four of the Best Picture nominees were in the top 20. Of course, this year four of the nine Best Picture nominees are already available on DVD and Blu-ray so it's not exactly a fair comparison.

This weekend was up almost 29% from last year with the top twelve at the box-office scoring $173.8 million. It wasn't until the final weekend in May last year that the box-office had a larger weekend as 2012 is clearly off to a great start with all four new films hitting theaters this weekend performed admirably. Let's take a look. Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row The Vow The Vow held up to expectations and with Valentine's Day a couple days away it should have a nice little five day run to kick off its theatrical debut. As far as predictions go, Laremy didn't dare go high enough but the readers weren't so shy as it seemed to be a competition to see who would go highest.
The highest bid on the board came from Brandon with $72.5 million, but it was Chuck Bartowski's $42.4 million bid that takes the credit for best of the week.

The Stephan Elliott-directed film, distributed by Icon, was shown on 244 screens, netting a screen average of $4459 . however this was down on its impressive opening weekend when it raked in $1.83 million across 242 screens.

Los Angeles — Hollywood is respecting the environment and recycling – again.
The prospect of a few dozen sequels, prequels, remakes and assorted other reworkings of familiar tales might sound tiresome until you look over the guest list studios have lined up.
More Batman with "The Dark Knight Rises." More Peter Parker with "The Amazing Spider-Man." More short guys on a quest with "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." More vamps and werewolves with "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2." More cool sunglasses with "Men in Black 3." More Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Incredible Hulk with "The Avengers." More prehistoric pals with "Ice Age: Continental Drift." More traveling zoo animals with "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted." There's even more Curly, Larry and Moe with "The Three Stooges."
Add in three action flicks based on classic fairy tales and four 3-D reissues of major blockbusters, and 2012 might make good on Hollywood's aim to...

Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa is set to make his English-language film debut this year with the dynamic thriller Safe House, which headlines Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. The first poster released in November focused solely on Washington’s star power, which is little surprise as Reynolds has had a rough year at the box office with the critically reviled Green Lantern and generally ignored The Change-Up. Still, Reynolds has made his way onto Safe House’s new poster…sort of.
With another black-and-white offering, Universal Pictures continues to promote this seemingly intense crime drama with a deeply dull ad campaign. Here both Washington and Reynolds get face time, but the design is utterly bizarre. Washington’s face is halved, cutting down on its recognizability, and Reynolds looks more like Josh Brolin than himself what with this odd photoshop treatment applied liberally to his face. Ultimately, it’s an atrocious poster...

It's always worth taking a look at the Black List every year, as chances are a few of these movies will end up being made and a lot of the time, they're actually pretty damn good after someone takes a chance on them. This is a list of the best unproduced screenplays of the year. On last year's list are titles like Safe House and All You Need Is Kill, which are being developed for feature release today. Which of these movies below will we actually see come to life in a year or two? The votes...

A screenplay titled The Imitation Game, about World War II cryptographer Alan Turing, who cracked the German Enigma code and later committed suicide after being criminally prosecuted for being a homosexual, tops the 2011 Black List. For the uninitiated, the Black List is a compilation of screenplays that will not be released in theaters during the calendar year that are ranked by several hundred studio executives. The list began in 2004 by film executive Franklin Leonard to help shed light on scripts that would otherwise fall by the Hollywood wayside. Among the scripts that were named to the Black List last year include The Hunger Games, Safe House, Margin Call, Snow White and the Huntsman and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. You can view that full list here. Some other...

With several projects to which he is already attached, the Unstoppable director is picking up yet another from the scriptwriter of Safe House David Guggeneheim. Not much is known about the plot of David Guggeneheim's script except for the subject matter expressed in its title. Narco-Subs are submersible vehicles used for drug trafficking in South and Central America. They are especially built small for stealth to avoid radar. This adds to an already full slate for the prolific filmmaker. Most recently, he was reportedly in the running to direct a remake of the Western classic The Wild Buch and is heavy into pre-production on the Sonny Barger biopic Hell's Angels about the infamous biker gang of the same name that has Stephen Gaghan on writing duties. That project is looking for it's...

Tony Scott has lined up a future project in the form of Narco-Sub , Variety reports. The action thriller is set up at 20th Century Fox from a spec script by David Guggeneheim. Plot details of the project have not been released, but narco-subs in real life are so named because they're submersible vehicles built to transport narcotics (particularly from Colombia to Mexico) and their compact size is designed to elude radar. Scott's last project was 2010's Unstoppable , also at Fox and he has plans to tackle Hell's Angels for the studio as well. He was also recently linked to a big-screen remake of Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch . Guggenheim, meanwhile, is responsible for the script to Safe House , to be released in early 2012 through Universal Pictures. (Photo...

Last night Yahoo debuted the trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the second Brendan Fraser franchise Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has honed in on, this time a sequel to Fraser's 2008 3D adventure, Journey to the Center of the Earth. The film, which is loosely based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island," finds The Rock playing stepfather to Sean (the returning Josh Hutcherson) and the two have to team up when Sean receives a coded distress signal from his grandfather on a mysterious island where no island should exist. Together with a helicopter pilot and his daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue grandpa and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever. The film will again be released in 3D and according to the poster IMAX 3D, which probably means the smaller, digital IMAX screens as it...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Hunter Trailer This certainly has a nice pedigree. Having a film being executive produced by the man who brought us Animal Kingdom, being based...

But will Rockapella be involved? Deadline reports that Walden Media (the company behind such hits as 'The Chronicles of Narnia') and Jennifer Lopez will team to bring 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?' to the big screen. Whether Lopez stars as the titular rouge is up in the air; Deadline thinks she will, Walden says she's just there to produce. Based on the popular computer game -- which was then turned into a popular PBS game show -- the film version of 'Carmen Sandiego' sounds a bit like 'Safe House': a former detective, Carmen becomes a master thief, and it's up to her former partner to find her and stop her... unless Carmen is actually a hero. Cue: ominous music sting! Anyway, this will probably happen in some form in the next decade. [Deadline]

Quick warning: if you want to be totally spoiler-free heading into the February action film 'Safe House,' you probably want to avoid the trailer. Not that what's spoiled is so surprising -- think 'Man on Fire' mixed with 'Training Day' and the Jason Bourne movies -- but it does seem to give away a few of the film's twists. That likely won't matter, though, if the action is as balls-out as it seems.

A few months ago I tried a minimalist approach to the poster write-ups. Well, the spirit of brevity has whisked me away once again, so you are in for a treat of reading the first thought that enters my mind about each poster. Think of it as a Rorschach test with posters.
1. The Vow: Grade C-
Cute, sappy, unrealistic romance. So many beautiful people in love.
2. My Week with Marilyn: Grade B
Michelle Williams, will you marry me?
3. The Hunger Games: Grade D
Jennifer Lawrence under a veil of photoshopped perfection. You deserve better Jennifer.
4. Lucky Trouble: Grade C
Green is the color of lovely, but not lovely enough to break the generic look of this poster.
5. Sherlock Holmes: Grade F
Try as it might, there is nothing heroic about this awful looking poster.
6. Safe House: Grade C
What’s wrong with the shape of Denzel’s head?...

It’s got big hair, car chases, one-liners and, erm, robots. Could Sylvester Stallone’s Cobra be the quintessential 80s action flick…?
Cobra could have been another big franchise for Sylvester Stallone, a third panel in a macho, blockbusting triptych that already included Rambo and Rocky.
A chaotic action thriller that saw Sly reunited with First Blood Part II director George Pan Cosmatos (though legend has it, of course, that Stallone ghost-directed that hit, not Cosmatos), Cobra did respectable business on its release in 1986, earning an estimated worldwide gross of $160m on a $25m budget. That’s less money than the first Rocky movie managed to make, but more than the first Rambo flick, First Blood.
There’s a major difference between Cobra and Rocky or First Blood though: the latter films were largely applauded by critics, while Cobra was torn apart. And unlike some denigrated 80s flicks, Cobra hasn’t,...
