The filmmakers spent nine weeks at the Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas, shooting at the famous Rocket Park (the gargantuan Building 9 that houses all of the spacecraft mock-ups for the ongoing shuttle missions) and Building 32, which houses the world's largest thermal vacuum chamber and simulates all conditions of outer space (except zero gravity). It takes radio signals almost 20 minutes to reach Mars, yet instantaneous communication happens throughout the film. However, this is clearly intentional because a forty-minute time delay for each response during every conversation the crew has with Houston would only serve to make the film much, much, much longer and far more drawn out. I pride myself in having good taste in movies. Among my favorites are Raging Bull, On The Waterfront, The English Patient, etc. Normally I hate movies like this. Austin Powers 2 was so bad I wanted to leave. But this movie just makes me laugh.....hard. Sure it has your stereotypical Disney stuff that gets laughs from the little ones, but there are so many clever lines for adults that it really surprised me the first time I saw it. Harland Williams was perfectly cast, I don't think anyone else would have been good as Fred Z. Randall. If you are in for a stupid movie that will make you laugh see RocketMan.
