Each week we take a look at what’s new and what’s essential viewing on the various VOD and movie streaming services.
This week’s theme seems to weighty and important drama although there is the best comedy from last year as well, a classic buddy cop action flick, zombie lunacy and Star Trek. Perhaps because we are moving into the awards season, Netflix has decided to move with it and add some acclaimed drama for the long dark nights ahead.
Pitch Perfect (2012)
For a comedy about acapella made in the wake of the success of Glee, Pitch Perfect sure is a well written and performed film. Coming as a complete surprise at the end of last year, the story should have led to all manner of clichés as wannabe DJ Anna Kendrick arrives at college and is inducted into an all-girl acapella group who are failing into blandness »

The White House is destroyed, the President is captured, and only one man can save him. That man is John Patterson. Hang on, that's not right …
I was on an Antoine Fuqua set once, The Replacement Killers, to meet Chow Yun-Fat, a delightful man. Even then, in the late 90s, back when it looked as if Hong Kong cinema might yet save the American action movie, I knew in my bones that Antoine Fuqua (whom I didn't meet) surely wasn't the man to import Chow Yun-Fat or the Hong Kong action aesthetic to Hollywood. Well, a lot I know. John Woo has been to Hollywood and done his thing and long since gone home, and Fuqua continues, against logic or reason or merit, to thrive. The man who gave us Bait, Shooter and King Arthur – mongrel dogs one and all – is often associated with the Oscar that Denzel Washington won for Training Day but, »

Olympus Has Fallen is a old-fashioned action movie that hearkens back to one of the grandest plot devices in the genre — the mission of saving the President of the United States. In this film, which riffs on the Die Hard setup better than A Good Day to Die Hard did, the White House is taken over by terrorists, Washington D.C. is a war zone, and the President is a hostage in his own bunker.
Playing the hero is Gerard Butler, an ex-secret service man who becomes the country’s last hope in saving the president’s (Aaron Eckhart) life, and also preventing nuclear devastation. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film also stars Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Dylan McDermott, Rick Yune, and Ashley Judd.
While he is still best known for directing Training Day in 2001, Fuqua previously helmed Brooklyn’s Finest (2009), Shooter (2007), King Arthur (2004), Bait (2000), The Replacement Killers (1998), and more. »

Chicago – The upcoming political action thriller “Olympus Has Fallen” has a familiar director behind it, the inventive Antoine Fuqua. Known best for “Training Day,” which won the Best Actor Oscar for Denzel Washington, he also directed ‘The Replacement Killers” (1998), “Shooter” (2007) and “Brooklyn’s Finest” (2009).
“Olympus Has Fallen” is somewhat of a departure for Fuqua, as it focuses on a large scale attack on the White House and the performances of an all-star cast. He directs heavy hitters such as Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo as government officials in crisis, and keeps up a rapid heartbeat throughout the high concept scenario.

Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino is perhaps coming to the small screen for the 2013-14 television season. The Wrap is reporting that Sorvino has been cast as the on-screen wife of comedian Jim Gaffigan for a CBS comedy pilot.
The as-of-yet unnamed pilot stars Gaffigan as a married father of five (much like he is in real life). Sorvino has been cast as wife Jeannie, a super-wife and super-mom whose sixth kid is her husband, Jim.
Sorvino has primarily been a movie actress, winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1995 for "Mighty Aphrodite" and also appearing in "Beautiful Girls," "The Replacement Killers" and "Gods and Generals." She did have a memorable guest-starring turn for the Super Bowl episode of "House." »

A sequel to the hugely popular martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon from Ang Lee (Life of Pi) is due to start production this year. According to Deadline, The Weinstein Company will produce the follow up with John Fusco (Forbidden Kingdom) set to write the script and Ronny Yu (Freddy vs. Jason) in talks to direct to the new film. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was the fourth book in the Crane-Iron Series by Wang Du Lu. The film adaptation starred Chow Yun-Fat (The Replacement Killers) and Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a Geisha) and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as three other Academy Awards.

In the just-released trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s latest project Olympus Has Fallen, things go from bad to worse for the President (played by Aaron Eckhart) and the country. First his Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) gets into an accident which presumably kills the First Lady (Ashley Judd). Later, terrorists attack D.C. from the air and the ground to overtake the White House.
And then…well…you should probably watch the trailer after the jump. It’s pretty spoiler heavy. But essentially, it’s up to ex-Special Forces Officer Banning (“the same guy who was removed from »
