Carter courted to post up Par's 'Back in the Day'

30 May 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Thomas Carter is in negotiations to direct Paramount Pictures' Back in the Day, a feature film based on controversial Richmond (Calif.) High School basketball coach Ken Carter. Studio-based MTV Films and Tollin/Robbins Prods. are producing. There is no start date on the project. Day reunites the director with Paramount and MTV, for whom he directed the studio and production company's 2001 feature Save the Last Dance. The helmer is no relation to the coach. Last year, the studio optioned the coach's life rights and those of his son Damon and hired Mark Schwahn to write the screenplay (HR 6/13). Coach Carter made national news in 1999 when he benched his entire undefeated basketball team for poor academic performance. He forfeited two league games and made the gym off-limits until students raised their grades, a move that drew praise and criticism from parents and school officials. His son was one of the members of the 1999 team who went on to earn four-year athletic scholarships. His was to the West Point Military Academy. Thomas Carter, repped by CAA, has directed such films as Metro and Swing Kids. »
