'Avengers' sets opening-weekend record: But is it the most impressive debut ever?

7 May 2012 8:00 PM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

At the box-office, more is always better, but I admit I was a little disappointed when analysts upgraded the record-breaking opening-weekend haul of The Avengers from $200.3 million to $207.4 million. Two hundred million dollars just sounded better, didn’t it? It had the ring of a record that could last forever — like Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points scored in a single game.

So as it turns out, The Avengers shattered the previous record — held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 — by more than $38 million, an enormous sum. Even with the less rounded figure of $207.4, the magnitude of the action film »

Dinosaurs To Invade Los Angeles Thanks To Warner Bros.

30 April 2012 11:09 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

From alien invasion to good cop gone vigilante, some movie concepts are just too rewarding to ever go extinct. Chief among them is dinosaurs unleashed on the modern world. With cutting edge special effects and convincing movie science, Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park was not only a terrifying summer sensation and box office record-breaker, but also the new standard by which all other monster adventures would be judged. Recently Universal announced plans to re-release Jurassic Park in 3D in 2013, and it seems Warner Bros. is looking to counter with a dinosaur-centered action flick of their own. Deadline reports that Warner Bros has bit on the pitch for a sci-fi adventure that places a pack of rapidly evolving dinosaurs into the heart of contemporary Los Angeles. Of course The Lost World: Jurassic Park unleashed a T-Rex on San Diego, so if this untitled action feature is going to up the ante »

Congratulations to Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe, winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. The judges have cited "his smart, inventive film criticism, distinguished by pinpoint prose and an easy traverse between the art house and the big-screen box office." And the Globe's collected his nominated reviews. "Journalism's highest honor has only been bestowed upon a film critic a few times," notes Eugene Hernandez of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. "Previous recipients include Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal in 2005, Stephen Hunter of the Washington Post in 2003 and Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times in 1975. 'I was just doing my job and this is what happened,' Morris offered modestly during an emotional newsroom speech that was recorded and edited for the Globe website."

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Shows Off Cycling Skill In New Stills

11 April 2012 3:18 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

If you’re a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who isn’t?) than this is your year! New stills have been released from his upcoming thriller Premium Rush, one of four films he’s starring in this year.

Jgl stars as Wilee, a messenger bike rider who risks his life every day on the streets of Manhattan, making sure everybody gets their mail. Between avoiding head-on collisions and speeding past pedestrians, Wilee is given an envelope – but this isn’t just any envelope. This one has a message. Someone wants to kill him.

The images below show Mr Gordon-Levitt in action, much like the snaps we’ve seen of him on the set of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, another film he’s starring in this year.

As for Premium Rush, Michael Shannon, Aaron Tveit, Jamie Chung, Dania Ramirez and Aasif Mandvi star as various characters Wilee meets along the way. »

Jurassic Park Will Be Re-Released in 3D in 2013

16 March 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Before there was Avatar; before there was The Matrix; before there was The Phantom Menace, there was Jurassic Park. The 1993 Steven Spielberg film was a landmark in computer animation and was the #1 film of 1993. It spawned two lesser sequels, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, and an entire themed area at Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure. Spielberg confirmed last year that a fourth Jurassic Park film is in development and, although he won't direct, he plans to be heavily involved. Next year marks the Jurassic Park's 20th anniversary and following the 3D re-releases of The Lion King, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and Titanic, the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park will appear even closer in 3D on July 19th, 2013, little more than two weeks after the release of Spielberg's sci-fi thriller Robopacalypse.

Jurassic Park - Behind the Scenes Footage of Stan Winston's Incredible Dinosaurs

5 March 2012 4:30 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

When I was growing up in the 1990's, Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park took movies to a whole new level for me. Dinosaurs were brought to life on the big screen like we had never seen them before. They were created using a mix of animatronics and CGI effects. I had never seen Dinosaurs so close to being so real before! It was so damn cool! The man that helped make that happen was special effects legend Stan Winston, and we have some great behind the scenes footage from the Jurassic Park films that are pretty freakin awesome. They show off the massively fierce Tyrannosaurus Rex, as well as the stealthy sleekness of the Raptors and more.

Thanks to Stan Winston School for sending us a link to these videos! Watch them below and share what you felt when you first saw Jurassic Park.

The 20th Century Fox film would star Vince Vaughn as a DEA agent who teams up with a drug runner in order to take down a cartel. It’s not exactly new territory for Scott, who’s recent output has included such action fare as Man on Fire, Déjà Vu and The Taking of Pelham 123. Fox is looking at a possible late summer or early fall start date for the $80 million film. The pic would mark Vaughn’s first toplining role in an action movie, though he did have a prominent part in Steven Spielberg’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Richard Schiff Confirms Role in Man of Steel; New Destructive Set Pic Arrives

14 January 2012 1:42 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Recent casting news had actor Richard Schiff (West Wing, The Lost World: Jurassic Park) joining director Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel, which seemed a little strange since the movie has already been shooting since August of last year. In an interview with I Am Rogue, Schiff revealed that he had actually been cast "over the summer" but is only now joining the production "for the last six weeks."

Reportedly, Schiff was cast as a character named Dr. Hamilton, which comic book fans instantly thought to be the DC Comics character Dr. Emil Hamilton, a genius-level inventor and former employee of S.T.A.R. Labs who has alternately been Superman's ally and enemy throughout the character's comic book history. Schiff played coy at first, and would not outright confirm that his character is the same Dr. Hamilton from the comic books.

West Wing's Richard Schiff to play scientist in Superman: Man of Steel

10 January 2012 5:12 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

In a late casting announcement for Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man of Steel, Variety is reporting that Richard Schiff is to play "a character dubbed Dr Hamilton."

This is almost certainly the comic book scientist Professor Emil Hamilton, who was initially a villain inventing devices to take down the hero before reforming to become Superman's advisor. Alessandro Juliani portrayed the character in Smallville.

Schiff's credits include The Lost World: Jurassic Park (where he was ripped in half by two tyrannosaurs while trying to tow a trailer from a precipice) and as a series regular in The West Wing.

Other uncorroborated chatter, via Cosmic Book News, recently suggested that Bradley Cooper (The Hangover, The Hangover Part II, The A-Team, Limitless) will appear in the Warner Bros film as Lex Luthor, in a cameo role that will presumably set up the sequel. A pretty good casting choice but so far just a rumour. »
