Despite the infusion of millions of pounds from the British lottery into the Scottish film industry, filmmakers in Scotland have failed to produce either commercial or artistic successes, The Scotsman newspaper indicated on its online site today (Thursday). It noted that one Scottish film, Life of Stuff, which received a lottery grant of £1 million ($1.42 million), sold only 304 tickets at the U.K. box office, amounting to a subsidy of £3,289.47 ($4,676.97) per ticket sold. The newspaper, citing similar examples of flops that had received significant grants from the lottery, commented: "These figures once again are calling into question the strategy of using lottery cash to subsidize films which cannot find commercial backing." »
