The filmmaker's wished for the audience to be unclear on the film's location, claiming it "Anytown, USA". They purposely avoided any distinguishing shots of the city, and even had to digitally erase some palm trees in the background of some scenes.

Production Designer Charles William Breen intentionally avoided using any exterior locations in the film at all in order to give the film an East Coast feel. In reality, the film was shot entirely on location in Los Angeles, except for the notorious steam bath scene, which was shot in a set built on stage.

In a shower scene Jason Patric and Aaron Eckhart's characters discuss a friend of theirs. Patric refers to their mutual friend as a man who believes he's Lord Byron. Jason Patric played Lord Byron eight years previously in the film Roger Corman's Frankenstein Unbound (1990).
