The film follows the lives of three very different girls who have join the Women's Land Army. The film was enjoyable but even though life for these young women was hard, the film does not really make one feel or understand this. The camera lingers lovingly on the English countryside and even when it is raining and muddy still makes everything look lovely. There are tragedies but I remained untouched by them, as the film rattled though the war years. Those who remember the 'Larkins' programmes on TV will understand the feeling that this is some imaginary world where everything will turn out alright in the end.
I always love period dramas, especially films that focus on women and their friendships but this movie left me wondering what the point was after two hours. The three girls come to work on the farm with three totally separate personalities. You have Prue the party girl, Ag the uptight college girl, and Stella who is supposed to be the mainstay of the entire movie, the sensible one. In fact, it is Stella who narrates the movie and opens it with how she moved to the farm to help and be closer to her fiancee. So we establish that she's committed and in love with her fiancee, but within the first 30 minutes, she's falling in love with the farmhand Joe, even after saying how unspeakable he is, for no good reason. Worst of all, the reason is never explained on how she fell out of love with her fiancee and fell in love with Joe. And she seems to have no problem with Joe falling in love, or at least in bed, with everyone else around her. The movie did not make sense to me at that point. Still it is a quiet film with gorgeous English scenery and if you just want a movie that focuses on friendship, then this is the movie for you. I watched it once and that's enough.
This somewhat tepid and quiet film follows three women from three
places, both socially and geographically, to a Dorset farm to work while
men who tend it go to fight in WWII. They gain each other's trust and
experience the joy and pains of love.
McCormack (Braveheart) and Weisz (The Mummy) do well, but they both are wasted on a film only slightly better than dull.
The plot is very realistic, the activities fun to watch, the ending hard to guess. Typical British film with hard to follow accents, bawdy behavior, average camera work. Overall a nice way to kill an hour or two.
I like World War II dramas particularly the ones that delve into the more
obscure aspects. Many interesting character dramas have evolved, notably,
Schindler's List, Memphis Belle, The Americanization of Emily, Tuskeegee
Airmen, and Hiroshima. Even the bio pics: Patton, Truman, Eisenhower all
provided interesting perspective for me, where I had none
The idea that England had a Woman's Land Army in WWII, whereby women went to take over farm chores as the men have gone off to war, sounds interesting. Women of all shapes and sizes, and backgrounds banding together for the common good, yep, it definitely has possibilities.
Now add Catherine McCormack in the lead, a woman who has the opportunity over the next few years to surpass Michelle Pfeiffer, as the beautiful woman who CAN act, throw in stunning period locations and costumes, and Land Girls should not fail.
But fail it does.
The story of these three women (McCormack, Rachel Weisz, Anna Friel) is limp and un-centered, where, by comparison, The Tuskeegee Airmen is driving and informative.
Pass on this mess, and if you want to see more of Catherine McCormack (aside from Braveheart) choose Dangerous Beauty instead.
agree with user-William James Harper, but it's beyond morality..
a ridiculous movie about 3 girls of different backgrounds and characters working at a farm in WWII. Prue is "easy" or slutty, Stella seems strong opinionated,Ag is a virgin..however they all "in love" with Joe.. there are lots of ridicules but 3 scenes for each woman to be presented here
1,prue scene.... when her newly wedded husband dies, she cries like he is her first love or they are loving couple for many years and tested by time .. but we all see her sleeps with at least 3 guys in the movies..what's more, she is extremely cheap, even a very sluttish prostitute has something reserved . I never see anyone like that in movies or real life.and, would any decent guy marry her?? a woman with very bad fame plus lack of basic self control. and really shameless, not by sex or morality, just by common sense of human behavior!
2,Ag scene, a virgin asks a man to have sex with her ,because she wants some experience before marriage,(also remember she has already met her future husband and promised)..well, if she could do such a thing, why could she be a virgin in the first place
3, Stella scene, a minor one, a woman kisses a man, after telling him she loves another man who is her Fiancé
enough? I haven't mentioned others, too many..the whole place is worse than brothel.it's supposed to be a film about normal young working women in WWII, but there are 20+ words like "sex", "sleep with" in it..
I remember I watched a porn movie when I was a kid, there is a scene a woman is showing her jealousy and anger over her lover's betrayal and sleeping with another woman. so, i reckon even porno makers know some minimum dignity and esteem of women??
like movies about women in war? watch french movie "a french woman" instead..
this movie shows the stupidity , clumsy, also pretension of the Brits,pathetic..greatest shame I have ever known for the Brits, pity Britain are getting worse today.but what's unbearably disgusting now is they are trying to defame its past.. having ruined today isn't enough, ah?
If you are entertained by a movie that is historically INCORRECT and is just this side of soft porn then by all means spend your time watching the film. You will learn nothing about World War 2 England, and certainly nothing about the moral standards to which English women adhered during that time of war. Whoever is responsible for this rot was out to apply the lax moral standards of today to a long ago but far more chaste period. I utterly detest movies that simply ignore the past for the sake of getting an R rating and in so doing hoping to get a larger audience. I lasted all of 15 minutes before I guess where this plot was going. You'd be far better off watching the Weather Channel. At least you'll get some useful information. Or play with your pet if you have one.
