Rick Moody, the author of the novel was so pleased with the film he sobbed through the end credits.
In the novel The Ice Storm, Rick Moody writes "And sometimes Paul himself was Ben Grimm, and sometimes he was Peter Parker, a.k.a. the Spider-Man" Coincidentally, Tobey Maguire plays both Paul and Peter Parker in the film versions.
The real ice storm portrayed in the film happened December 16-17 in 1973 and was named "Felix."
Natalie Portman turned down the role of Wendy Hood.
The song that Paul and Wendy are listening to in her bedroom - "I Got a Name" by Jim Croce - was released on September 20, 1973, the very day that Jim Croce was killed in the crash of a small plane in Louisiana.
To prepare for the film, Ang Lee let the cast members study stacks of magazine cutouts from the early 1970s.

Although events in the film occur in November, filming actually began in the late spring. This is evidenced by an abundance of greenery in the exterior shots.

When asked to say grace, Christina Ricci goes into a tirade about the cruelty that is celebrated as Thanksgiving. She makes a similar speech when Wednesday, her character in Addams Family Values (1993), hijacks the camp Thanksgiving pageant. Both movies star Ricci and David Krumholtz.
The book Janey is reading while sitting on the water bed is "When She Was Good" by Philip Roth.
