At the beginning of the film, when Birdee and Bernice are leaving Chicago to stay with her mother in Texas, the two are driving on a freeway. They pass a bus with a billboard on the side advertising for the television show Birdie was just dumped on. The billboard reads: "Toni: She'll change your life!"
The first film made under Sandra Bullock's own production company, Fortis Films.
The film was choreographed by Patsy Swayze.
Gena Rowlands, Washington-Lee High Class of 1947, plays mother of Sandra Bullock, Washington-Lee High Class of 1982.
This movie represents Forrest Whitaker's third film as a director.
The iconic song Smile by Charlie Chaplin is played in the background in the first half of the movie, in the next scene, Travis is using a Chaplin costume.
Two versions of the song "Make You Feel My Love" were used in this film. The first is by Garth Brooks, and the second is by Trisha Yearwood. The two recording artists married one another in 2005.
