Curio: Quote Pillows

3 August 2010 9:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Alexa from Pop Elegantiarum here. Seeing Inception got me thinking about Michel Gondry's more whimsical exploration of the subconscious, The Science of Sleep. I'd love to watch them back-to-back, but maybe then my reality would start blurring with my dream life. Here's a cute bit of craftiness: a quote from Gondry's film embroidered on a speech bubble pillow by Tonya Ruanto.

Tonya makes all kinds of speech bubble pillows, including quotes from The Notebook and Hope Floats. (I'm especially loving her Michael Scott quote pillow.) She will even make a custom quote pillow for you.

I can see many Great Moments in Screen Bitchery working for these. But I'm thinking of having her make one that reads "Mark it eight, Dude," so that I can hold it up to my husband's head and stop him from saying it every five minutes. Dare to dream.

Streep Nom #11: One True Thing

20 June 2010 4:58 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

We're looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competitive field.

Previously: 78, 79, 81, 82, 83, 85, 87, 88, 90 and 95

Twenty years after her first nomination for The Deer Hunter (1978) Meryl Streep replaced Bette Davis as runner up to Katharine Hepburn's Oscar throne with her cancer victim in One True Thing. For a very short time period (i.e. twelve months) the three legends had a 10-11-12 Oscar nomination spread. Streep would soon leave both Hepburn and Davis in the dust. But we'll get to her #1 status when it rolls around.

1998 the nominees were

Cate Blanchett, ElizabethFernanda Montenegro, Central Station *Nathaniel's vote*

Gwyneth Paltrow, Shakespeare in LoveMeryl Streep, One True ThingEmily Watson, Hilary & Jackie

The Blanchett vs. Paltrow contest has arguably been the most discussed in modern Oscar Actress history with the possible exception of Swank vs. Bening (both rounds). People still get hot under their ruffs about this one a full dozen years later. »

Exclusive! Jesse’s Daughter Chandler Proclaims: I Love Sandra ‘Like A Mommy!’

16 April 2010 2:32 PM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

BauerGriffin.com

She’s also a huge fan of Sandra’s movies… and her laugh!

We’ve all heard how much Sandra Bullock loves Jesse James‘ six-year-old daughter Sunny, but did you know Sandra is super close with his 16-year-old daughter Chandler, too? Chandler has been fielding questions from fans on her formspring.me account recently, and a lot of them have to do with Sandra, who she says she loves “like a mommmmmy.” She’s been sharing a ton of cute details about their relationship, including one of her favorite Sandra movies!

One of the things Chandler seems to love most about Sandra is her sense of humor. In answering fans’ questions, Chandler admits that Sandra has made her laugh until her stomach hurt. And even though Chandler says she prefers Sandra in comedic roles, she loved her in the 1998 romantic drama Hope Floats, in which she starred alongside »

Sandra Bullock: 'Why I hate romantic comedies'

21 March 2010 3:00 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

She won an Oscar for a dramatic role in The Blind Side, so could this be the end of Sandra Bullock, 'romcom chick'? Plus, she explains why playing a Christian Republican was so difficult for her

Sandra Bullock has been doing interviews all day in a Beverly Hills hotel suite, but she's still full of energy when we meet, and is as witty and self-mocking as a fan might expect from her film roles. Oddly, perhaps, she's rather more slender and pretty in the flesh than on screen.

We're here to talk about her performance in her new film The Blind Side, which is based on a true story – the film for which she has since won an Oscar. She plays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a well-heeled, white Memphis woman who takes in a homeless black teenager, a giant, almost silent man-child called Michael Oher, then mentors him through high school »

David Thomson on Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock accepted both her Oscar and Razzie knowing she didn't quite deserve either, but now is her moment to show her range

During the weekend of the recent Oscar awards Sandra Bullock entered the Hall of Eternal Likability. No, there isn't such an institution, but the idea exists in America and "Sandy" made it because in the same weekend she turned up to receive both her Oscar for The Blind Side and a Razzie for All About Steve. Moreover she handled the two occasions with the same easygoing attitude that guesses she didn't quite deserve either award but that knows her life has always been something of a gamble. Last year, when she had a modest hit in The Proposal – nowhere near a good film – she looked like a 44-year-old actress clinging on to lead roles. And now? Well, she looks like the same person wondering how you find »

Sandra Could Get Good Break-Up Advice From... Herself

18 March 2010 11:05 AM, PDT | newser.com | See recent newser news »

Sandra Bullock’s husband had an affair—allegedly—and the whole world knows about it. Luckily, someone in her past has gone through a similar situation and can offer some tried and true advice. That someone? Birdee Pruitt, of course, the main character in Hope Floats, played by, um, Sandra Bullock. Her four-step plan, outlined by Eleanor Barkhorn in The Atlantic : Return to your roots : As you can tell from the accents in the trailer at left, Birdee went home to Texas; Sandra should head to Arlington, Va. Pour your love into your daughter : Of course, Sandra doesn’t actually have a »

Moments before Sandra Bullock took the stage at the Oscars on Sunday night to accept her statue for Best Actress, Forest Whitaker spoke glowingly about Bullock as part of a tribute to the women nominated in the category.

Having directed her in the 1998 romantic drama "Hope Floats," Whitaker expressed his awe for the depth of Bullock's art and the ease with which she connects with the camera. Days later, Whitaker, an Oscar winner himself for "The Last King of Scotland," was thankful he was able to pay tribute to his friend and colleague.

"It meant a great deal to me [that] I got a chance to work with her before," Whitaker told MTV News on »

Thoughts and Notes on the 82nd Academy Awards

8 March 2010 12:55 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

The 82nd Academy Awards have come and gone, and, instead of running a copy and pasted list of the winners (and inevitable losers), I’ve decided to grade the awards show itself.  There were very few surprises, but, as the following list indicates, there were some interesting take-aways from the festivities.

Here you go:

Hamish Hamilton served as director of the show for the first time.  Take from that what you will. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were very funny in their roles as co-hosts, but didn’t it seem like they were under-used? Martin was strapped into that cherry picker in the beginning.  Baldwin wasn’t. This proves my theory that Alec Baldwin is more of a man than Steve Martin. The faux disdain between Baldwin and George Clooney was brilliant and should have been re-visited throughout the night.

Just for the record, this was a Slanket, not a Snuggie. »

Bullock Feted at Sbiff

10 February 2010 9:02 AM, PST | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Oscar nominee Sandra Bullock received the American Riviera Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 5 at a ceremony held at the Arlington Theatre. The event, moderated by Back Stage film critic Pete Hammond, featured a retrospective of Bullock's career highlights, though the actor was also willing to talk frankly about some of the lows. In discussing the much-maligned sequel "Speed 2: Cruise Control," Bullock said, "I remember asking every day, 'When do we get a script?' Apparently, you don't need one in an action film."Forest Whitaker, who directed Bullock in "Hope Floats," presented the award to her, returning the favor after Bullock presented him with an award at the same festival in 2007. Whitaker praised how easy Bullock makes her work look, though it's filled with "delicacies and complexities," he said, adding, "She's like a ballerina who makes standing on her toes seem like a natural way of walking. »
