Jaisingh lives in India with his son, Sahil, who dislikes his father. Things only get worse between father and son, when Jaisingh wants him to get married to Sheetal, a woman he has chosen to be his daughter-in-law. But Sahil wants to marry another girl by the name of Isha, and no amount of pressure can get him to change his mind. Finally, an argument ensues between the two, with Jaisingh getting killed. The Police are summoned, they arrest Sahil, try him in the Indian courts, convict him, but instead of giving him the death sentence, they put him in jail for life. A defiant Sahil, who still maintains his innocence, finds a way to escape, with the authorities hot on his tail, and leading this chase is a senior policeman by the name of Udham Singh, who has never been known to fail in his job of apprehending runaways and other criminals. It's been said that Rajiv Rai's 'Gupt' is one of the best whodunnit thrillers of Hindi cinema. I couldn't disagree more. It's below average. Actually scratch that, it's pretty bad. A lot of money has been spilled but the film is executed in a very amateur style. Should I start with the horrendous dialogue (although the ones between Manisha Koirala and Om Puri are quite amusing), the screechy background score, the childish writing and the monotonous cinematography. The dishum-dishum fight scenes are headache inducing. The movie hasn't dated well.
Now regarding the who's the killer factor, I thought that was quite obvious right when the first murder happens. It's a little puzzling that no one realized it. Just look at the killer's feet and notice the gait in the first scene. I was hoping there would be an extended catfight between Kajol and Manisha but alas. Anyway, the final chase sequence is fun to watch. Speaking of the two women, both perform well considering the material they were given (halfbaked characters). But more than that, Manisha Koirala's ultraglamorous image and Kajol's sizzling girl-next-door look ooze sex appeal. Om Puri delivers a sincere performance. Bobby Deol is terrible as is the rest of the cast.
Some heavy editing and rewriting is required. 'Gupt' could have easily done without an hour. Perhaps that would have made for even better viewing. I only watched this for the two beautiful leading women.
