Wong Kar-wai to Direct Crime Drama ‘Tong Wars’ for Amazon

10 September 2017 6:46 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

In the handful of years since his last feature, we’ve been teased with a variety of potential future projects from In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express director Wong Kar-wai. Most recently, there was a Gucci biopic for Annapurna and a TV series in China. Although those haven’t come to fruition yet, it looks like a new one will.

Four years ago while on the press tour for The Grandmaster, the director said, “I’ve always wanted to make a film about the Tong Wars, the rioting and the crime factions in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the early part of the last century.” Well, he’s now going to get his chance, albeit not in the initially-desired form.

Amazon Studios has announced Wong Kar-wai will direct Tong Wars, an hour-long drama series written and executive produced by Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco, The Good German), Variety reports. »

21 August 2017 11:30 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The reality of Donnie Brasco is based around the true story of Joe Pistone, an FBI agent that went deep undercover to infiltrate one of the most influential crime families in America back in the mid to late 1970’s. Pistone was so successful that he didn’t just affect the Bonnano family that he’d been trying to infiltrate, but had a profound effect upon the rest of the Mafia as well. In short, he showed the Mafia that they could be in fact be infiltrated and created a serious breach that they weren’t aware existed. But there are a few things

Author: Scott Davis

There are many shows in the Us that enjoyed success as part of the 2016/17 slate but none have been as big a hit as Bull, the new show from CBS that was ranked as the highest-rated new show across the pond and has already been greenlit for a second season, due for later this year. We sat down with star Michael Weatherly to chat about the show and working with some amazing creative talents – including one very famous storyteller…

“We could have been cancelled!” says Weatherly, “CBS has a really great track record of knowing how to put things in front of an audience and one they will enjoy but by the same token there were a lot of shows last year that didn’t survive.”

The show is based on the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw (aka Dr. Phil) who used his skills to help »

The Merciless review – so unpredictable it forgets to be interesting

25 May 2017 9:53 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A relentless, bloody crime opera, with far too many plot surprises and narrative jumps, but charismatic young actor Yim Si-wan shows promise

Byun Sung-hyun’s Bulhandang has the English title The Merciless, and this is an example of truthful advertising. By the end of this relentless, sprawling and bloody crime opera it may be you who is on your knees, begging for the damn movie to just hurry up and end it.

Drawing elements from Donnie Brasco, A Prophet, Heat and Infernal Affairs, The Merciless begins on the day Jo Hyun-su (Yim Si-wan) gets released from prison and is picked up in conspicuously bling-ish fashion by his underworld mentor Han Jae-ho (Sul Kyung-gu). We expand out from that point, both backwards and forwards (with some additional jumps to add confusion) for an increasing series of “aha!” revelations about everyone’s true motives. The first time it’s clever; by the end it’s a joke. »

Anne Heche Was Jealous Of Sandra Oh’s Career, At Least Until They Both Made ‘Catfight’

3 March 2017 1:00 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Sandra Oh and Anne Heche had never worked together before last year, but the seasoned actresses have both enjoyed a diverse series of successes. Oh broke into the film scene as the motorcycle riding free spirit in Alexander Payne’s “Sideways,” while Heche had roles in “Donnie Brasco” and “Wag the Dog.” More recently, they are better known for television projects such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Hung,” respectively.

In “Catfight,” these seasoned actresses get to sink their teeth into a script that is as ambitious in its simplicity as it is politically searing. Oh and Heche relish every punch and barb thrown in the film’s three rip-roaring fights, and both are pitch perfect in bringing Tukel’s daring script to life.

Veronica (Oh) bluntly berates her son for drawing at the dinner table, as her husband, Stanley (Damion Young), speaks gleefully about the money he will make from “the war. »

Movie Review – Catfight (2017)

28 February 2017 6:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Catfight, 2017.

Written and Directed by Onur Tukel

Starring Sandra Oh, Anne Heche, Alicia Silverstone, Amy Hill, Myra Lucretia Taylor, Ariel Kavoussi, Craig Bierko, and Dylan Baker

Synopsis:

The rivalry between two former college friends comes to a head when they both attend the same glamorous event.

It’s hard to not get political talking about writer/director Onur Tukel’s latest warped feature (this is a man that made a movie about a guy born without a dick) Catfight, considering that society is at a point in time where someone’s morality is judged based on where their views align. Whether it’s America with this past year’s election or the UK and its Brexit situation, friendships have literally been pointlessly and frustratingly torn apart by nothing more than a personal opinion.

Catfight is here to remind everyone that no matter which side of the extreme one resides on, »

Anne Heche and Sandra Oh get in the ring for the first Catfight trailer & poster

15 February 2017 2:11 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Author: Zehra Phelan

There’s nothing like watching a couple of old school friends beating the hell out of each other to completely de-stress right? That’s exactly what you get in the trailer for Catfight when the claws come out and it’s all out war between these vixens until the roles are reversed and they go right back at it again.

Written and Directed by Turkish-American filmmaker Onur Tuke, who wrote and directed 2014’s vampire comedy Summer of Blood, brings his touch of black comedy to Catfight with an intriguing premise. Starring Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh (Sideways) and Seven Days Seven Nights and Donnie Brasco star Anne Heche, who go at it like Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno on a bad day. The ladies deliver a knockout punch in the trailer making this look like riotous and mindless fun.

Providing some much-needed backup is Alicia Silverstone as Ashley’s lesbian love interest, »

Scarface Remake Gets a Release Date and Coen Brothers Script

10 February 2017 12:27 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Just a few weeks after Universal's Scarface remake gained star Diego Luna and lost director Antoine Fuqua, the studio has brought on Joel Coen and Ethan Coen to rewrite the script. The studio has also set an August 10, 2018 release date, a date which the studio had previously set aside for an untitled "event film." As of now, the remake doesn't have any direct competition, although Sony's Holmes & Watson opens a week earlier on August 3, along with an untitled Disney live-action movie.

Variety also reports that the studio is close to finding a new director, following the departure of Antoine Fuqua. Whoever the studio brings on will be the fourth director to sign on, following in the footsteps of David Yates (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Pablo Larrain (Jackie) and Antoine Fuqua. There have also been a slew of writers on the project before the Coen Brothers came aboard, »
