On could suppose they took the project because it's there. Variety reports that director Stephen Daldry and writer Michael Cristofer are in the planning stages for a mountain pic called Everest for Universal and Working Title Films. Centering around the disastrous climb in May 1996 that claimed eight lives (and was later documented), the pic will intersperse stories of the climbers with those waiting to see if they come back alive. The event was documented in many books, most notably Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, but instead of reaching for an adaptation, Cristofer and Daldry are working from independent research. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, who worked with Daldry on Billy Elliot, are slated to produce. No start date has been set.
