Clip joint: teenage pregnancy

21 December 2011 8:26 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

As if they didn't have enough to worry about, young mothers are made to stand and deliver by film-makers desperate to push social themes. Clip joint practices its breathing with film's standout teenage pregnancy scenes

In the Twilight finale, Bella Swan's just 18 when she gives birth to her little monster (which still doesn't excuse the fact that she names it Renesmee). In the hands of Mormon author Stephenie Meyer, getting knocked up by a vampire before you can legally drink is all part of the circle of life – an excuse to quit school and devote yourself full-time to gazing into your husband's eyes. But for most writers it's a chance to mark out a character as tough, to illustrate wasted opportunities or to highlight the risks of an unchaperoned date.

Here are my pick of film's best teen pregnancy scenes:

Watch Guy Pearce Channel John McClane in Ridiculous M.S. One: Maximum Security Trailer

15 December 2011 4:52 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

A new trailer has surfaced on Allocine for the Luc Besson produced movie Lock-Out featuring some recogniable faces including Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential, The Kings Speech) and Peter Stomare (The Big Lebowski, Armageddon) and perhaps taking the award for ‘The Most Outrageous & Ludicrous Movie To Not Star Nicolas Cage Award of 2012′.

Ridiculously titled M.S. One: Maximum Security outside of the U.S. (seriously), the futuristic sci-fi trailer comes across like “Escape From New York set in space”, with Guy Pearce as a wrongfully arrested convict sent to the titular space station/prison to rescue the American President’s daughter when a mass breakout occurs. Lost’s Maggie Grace plays the kidnapped daughter and for whatever reason Luc Besson likes to make movies where she is kidnapped (see Taken, also produced by Luc Besson’s Europacorp) and she is getting herself typecast in the worst possible way.

Tmp's 2011 Christmas Wishlist: What Do Movie Buffs Want?

12 December 2011 12:43 PM, PST | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Here at Tmp, we’re a bunch of movie nerds...Seems like a no-brainer, but as such, we tend to have unique items on our Christmas lists.  So if you’ve got a movie buff that you need to shop for this Christmas, maybe our own individual wishlists will aid you in finding that perfect gift.

Carla

The reason it took so long for me to write something down on my wish list is not lack of wanting something, but it is because I want everything.  However, since we are not writing a novel, I did manage to narrow it down to two things:

I love Anthony Hopkins!  He is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, older Hollywood actors.  The man is undoubtedly a living legend in the film world.  What Hopkins fan would not want an autographed photo from Silence of the Lambs?  As a bonus, this »

David Gordon Green on why "The Sitter" is a family movie, and the absurd genius of Sam Rockwell

9 December 2011 7:57 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

"The Sitter" hits theaters today, featuring Jonah Hill as an inept, aimless slacker who agrees to babysit a neighbor's kids only to end up having a wild night involving high-speed car chases, an insane drug dealer, and more explosions than a Michael Bay film.

"Pineapple Express" and "Your Highness" director David Gordon Green was the man behind the camera for "The Sitter," and he recently explained to IFC why the film is yet another ode to '80s cinema, and why he considers it a "family movie" despite its "R" rating.

IFC: When we were talking about the trailer for "The Sitter," you mentioned that it was the product of your love for 1980s comedies. What was it about those films that you tried to capture with "The Sitter"?

David Gordon Green: I like movies about guys who have poor decision-making skills. Movies like that provide a lot of comic opportunity. »

The 10 most underrated comedies of all time

7 December 2011 10:49 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Comedy is the hardest thing to pull off, despite what the Academy Awards would have you believe. If you want proof of that, think of how painful it is to watch an attempt at comedy that isn't actually funny. If a drama's not that good, and can still get a cheeky enjoyability by how seriously everybody takes it. If a comedy sucks, there's no saving it. Now, we all love "Anchorman" and "The Big Lebowski," but here's a quick list of undernoticed, underseen or underrated comedies that should not be dismissed just because they don't have huge cult followings.

1. "The Jerk" (1979)

One might argue that Steve Martin's classic can't be underrated, since Judd Apatow made the enjoyment of "The Jerk" the barometer about whether or not a girl is worth dating in "Freaks and Geeks," but it makes the list because it's impossible to overrate this absurd gem, and »

Whether you're watching a cattle drive crew cook some baked beans over a campfire or a shootout in front of a saloon, odds are you're going to see a striking 'stache somewhere in that scene peeking out from under the brim of a Stetson. For our final Movember Mustache Movie Madness column during the international men's health fundraiser where hombres grow mustaches for a month to benefit the Livestrong and Prostate Cancer Foundations, let's focus on some of the most memorable mustaches to mosey across the big screen.

Robert Redford as Henry Longabaugh, a.k.a. the "Sundance Kid," in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"

Unarguably one of Hollywood's handsomest leading men, people forget that Redford's good looks were aided by a thick mustache in his breakthrough role. And, while we're on the topic of truisms, let's take a look at that manly mustache. This 'stache »

We're three-quarters through Movember, well into the styling period for any properly moustached gentleman. What movie-based style will you pick?

It's that time of year again, when the weather turns cold and normally clean-shaven men start scratching their upper lip as they try to grow the best moustache possible for a good cause. It's Movember!

Unfortunately there are some men whose efforts are classified more as extreme stubble than a moustache, but for those now successfully hairy there's a decision to make: what kind of 'tache style should you go for? Handlebar or Regent? Poirot or Einstein?

Fortunately there's always the silver screen to help you along, with dozens of different varieties to choose from. Below are some of the greatest moustaches in film. Take your pick! And then rustle up your own suggestions. Just don't complain to us if all you've got is a 5 o'clock shadow.

Nomad Cinema Rocks Up At Whiteleys

With their archaic Odeon finally being given a 21st century makeover – nobody there received the memos about 3D, digital projectors or air conditioning – Whiteleys shopping centre in West London looked set to be cinema-less for this Christmas period.

But at the time of year for miracles, here on Queensway there has been one. The Nomad cinema has arrived to cure the winter blues with a series of classic movies – from cult classics like The Big Lebowski, greats from yesteryear like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and contemporary films that have made a smash like the funniest comedy of this year, Bridesmaids.

Famed as a traveling cinema, Nomad has dropped its anchor in the vacant store next door to HMV – a perfect location to blindside entertainment hungry shoppers. Think of it as watching a film in your mate’s garage on his massive projector. Admittedly this would require you to have an »

Culture Flash: smoking in cars

16 November 2011 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It's pretty tricky to find any support in the arts for the proposed ban on smoking in cars

Smoking: bad for you. Driving: bad for you. Smoking and driving: really, really bad for you. So says the British Medical Association, which wants smoking in cars banned. But if they're looking for a useful, readymade health warning from the arts, they've got their work cut out.

Hollywood spent most of the postwar era promoting smoking as glamorous, meaningful, sociable, sexy, rebellious, and just plain normal. Herculean smokers such as John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart promoted cigarettes off-screen before smoking did them in. And special mention must go to Nicolas Roeg's Bad Timing, in which someone smokes in every scene. Negative portrayals are rare, unless you count Michael Mann's anti-big-tobacco masterpiece The Insider. Let's not even try to deconstruct the 1980s Star Wars anti-smoking ad in which C3PO catches R2D2 sneaking a fag. »

"One of the best closing lines ever," said shodfather in response to Becky Barnicoat's nomination of Some Like It Hot, which opened the second week of our My favourite film series in giggling, jiggling style. Billy Wilder's note-perfect comedy stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as two musicians, disguised as women, who join an all-girl band to escape the mob. "Even on my X-tieth viewing I laughed at jokes I'd missed before," said Becky of a film that was "the sum of many impeccable parts". Some of them, according to nocod, »

Rare Monroe Photos And Pivotal Career Letter To Be Auctioned

8 November 2011 5:46 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Rare photographs of a teenage Marilyn Monroe when she was just plain old Norma Jean Dougherty are to be auctioned off during a memorabilia sale next month.

The model shots, taken by Joseph Jasgur, are among the items that will be going under the hammer at the Julien's Auctions event, which runs from 1 to 4 December.

The lots also include a letter the aspiring star wrote to her foster mother, Grace Goddard, to describe her first meeting with U.S. Army photographer David Conover, who helped launch the 19-year-old icon-to-be's modeling career. The eight-page letter gives insight on Norma Jeane's marriage to Jimmie Dougherty and her hopes of a better career.

The letter is expected to fetch up to $50,000 (£31,250).

A spokesman for Julien's tells WENN, "With encouragement from Conover, Monroe took steps to join the Blue Book Modeling Agency where she met photographer Joseph Jasgur who took numerous photographs of the 19-year-old. These photographs and copyrights become available for the very first time and the complete archive and early image copyrights will be sold exclusively at this auction event. The settings for the photographs range from high atop buildings in Los Angeles to Zuma Beach."

Other highlights at the auction include the Nolan Miller signature black and red gown worn by Elizabeth Taylor in Poker Alice, a collection of costumes and props from the 2000 blockbuster film The Grinch, Sean Connery's 007 Walther-ppk .38 calibre pistol from Never Say Never Again and costumes from the cult film The Big Lebowski. »

HBO's gorgeous box of swag for Boardwalk Empire
