Storyline

A man and woman detective team investigate the murder of a corporate president, but because the deceased was a friend of the male detective, he is reluctant to believe the signs that point to the widow as the killer. Still, the team take turns watching her movements, but during the male detective's turn, his past friendship with the deceased gradually allows him access to the suspected widow, and it isn't long before they're in bed together. But when he discovers that she's the beneficiary to millions that had been meant for her husband, the detective is moved in ways quite unpredictable. Written by BOB STEBBINS <stebinsbob@aol.com>

What people will do for money

"The Beneficiary" (1997) is a neo-noir with the femme fatale (Stacy Haiduk) front and center. This we learn at the outset as she puts her plot into operation with an elaborate plan to remove husband Ron SIlver from the scene and become his beneficiary. Her problem becomes a detective team, Linden Ashby and Suzy Amis. The story meanders endlessly as their investigation hits a dead end, finally leading to some worthwhile twists. I'd rate this as 5.5 if I could, to suggest its slow middle makes it somewhat below par. For a TV-movie, it's not bad I suppose. This neo-noir has escaped being listed by all the usual sources. I imagine there are more TV-movies like it that have likewise been overlooked that have marked noir story characteristics like this one.
