Mr Bean star’s debut as French detective attracts a 28.1% share for ITV, beating BBC1’s airing of movie Marvel Avengers Assemble

Rowan Atkinson’s debut as French detective Maigret was watched by nearly 6 million viewers on ITV.

Critics were left yearning for a bit more action in the first of two adaptations starring the Georges Simenon creation memorably portrayed by Michael Gambon 25 years ago.

He has created some of television’s most memorable characters, with millions of fans around the world, but Rowan Atkinson initially turned down his latest role as pipe-smoking French detective Jules Maigret because of the challenge of playing an “ordinary man”.

Atkinson is returning to television this Easter in his first major primetime role for almost two decades but has revealed he said no at first to the ITV show – which some think could fill the vacancy left by the retirement of David Suchet’s Poirot.

Two-time Emmy winner Larry Drake, who portrayed the mentally-challenged Benny Stulwicz on NBC's hit drama series L.A. Law, passed away today at the age of 66. While no cause of death was given, TMZ reports that the actor did have recent health problems pertaining to his weight, but his health issues weren't thought to be terminal. The actor was found in his Hollywood, California home by a friend at approximately 1:30 Pm today.

Larry Drake was born on February 21, 1950 to Lorraine, a homemaker, and Raymond Drake, a drafting engineer for an oil company, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma and originally wanted to be a teacher before studying acting. He landed a variety of small roles throughout the 1970s and 1980s in movies like Date with a Kidnapper and The Karate Kid, and TV shows such as Hardcastle and McCormick and Hunter. Emmy-winning actor Larry Drake, who played Benny on “L.A. Law,” died Thursday, his rep confirmed. He was 66.

A cause of death has not yet been revealed. According to TMZ, which first reported the news, Drake was found dead by his friend in his Hollywood home.

Drake played the developmentally disabled office assistant Benny Stulwicz on “L.A. Law.,” which was praised for handling Benny’s odyssey in a very progressive fashion, especially for the time, as he gets the job, finds his own apartment and gets a girlfriend over time, sometimes having to fight for his legal rights with the help of the attorneys who employ him. Drake recurred on the series from 1987-94.

He was Emmy nominated for the role three times, in 1988, 1989 and 1990, winning the first two times out. He reprised the role for “L.A. Law: The Movie” in 2002.

London — BBC Worldwide has inked the first international sales on TV films “Maigret Sets a Trap” and “Maigret’s Dead Man,” in which Rowan Atkinson, the star of the “Mr Bean,” “Blackadder” and “Johnny English” franchises, plays the French detective Jules Maigret.

Atkinson is best known for comedy, but the Maigret films present him with an opportunity to demonstrate his acting abilities in a straight dramatic role, in the same way that his former “Blackadder” co-star Hugh Laurie did in “House.” The first to take the bait are French public television channel France 3, German public broadcaster Ard, Swedish broadcaster TV4 and Denmark’s Dr. BBC Worldwide, the U.K. broadcaster’s sales arm, launches the films at its global sales event BBC Worldwide Showcase next month.
