Assault on my eyes, ears and brain - 16%
14 February 2012 | by (Hampshire, England) – See all my reviews

I promised you that someday, I would get around to watching one of the many free movie channels I currently receive on my Sky box. Sure enough, Movies 4 Men is one such channel and judging by how often this film comes up on the schedule, I guess that we're all into mindless action movies mixed in with a little heavily edited softcore porn. Sadly, this is just another low budget blast from the Hulkster and is not helped by the fact that the plot feels like it was written by a six year old with a crayon.

Hulk Hogan plays the ubermacho McBride, one of a team of US Navy SEALS betrayed by Fraker (Trevor Goddard) in pursuit of drugs baron Carlos Gallindo (Billy Drago). When McBride takes it upon himself to seek revenge for the deaths of his colleagues, his fellow SEAL Roy Brown (Carl Weathers) tags along as does undercover Government agent Hunter Wiley (softcore icon Shannon Tweed) whose operation was ruined by McBride's previous intervention. But their plans have to wait when the All American Gymnastics Team are kidnapped by Fraker and taken to the island fortress of Devil's Island...

Now what, you may be asking, have the All American Gymnastics team got to do with anything? I'm still unsure other than it means all the hostages are wearing leotards draped in the Stars & Stripes. Yep, "Assault On Devil's Island" is that kinda movie where Hulk spends as much time topless as Tweed does and Weathers gets to use the minigun he never got the chance to in "Predator". I realise that a low budget TV movie isn't ever going to change the world but even compared to the likes of Steven Seagal, this is a poor movie filled with obvious shortcuts like when our heroes are picked up at sea by some stock footage of a submarine and even 9mm pistols make the same noise as Dirty Harry's Magnum. The plot is quite ridiculous and filled with confusion and things that make no sense. For example, Hulk lives "somewhere in the Florida Keys" (he's so tough, even his address is classified!) but not secret enough for the baddies to turn up in a chopper. And speaking of the baddies, why does their scheme revolve around making Hulk really angry so he'll go after them? Didn't Hulkamania die out in the early Nineties?

I could go on pointing out flaws all day (my personal favourite is Tweed's change of lingerie at Hulk's house - where did she find those?) but I think you have the point. This is a shoddy, ill-thought out, cheap, excessively patriotic piece of tosh dulled by a stupid script, laughable performances and about as enjoyable as an hour of "Barney The Dinosaur". Hardly surprising that a TV movie featuring a wrestler and a prolific B-lister doesn't score higher but there you go. I appreciate the budget constraints which is why this doesn't score lower than the likes of "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever" but in terms of entertainment, it's not far off. If you like watching garbage in between your favourite commercials then this will go down a treat. For everyone else, avoid like a smelly tramp.
