Violence erupts in unlikely people
20 November 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Here's another Kurt Voss movie that I like, named "Amnesia" (1997). This is definitely a noir, and it's listed as such by John Grant. I watched a version cut to 80 minutes. I'll be hunting for a complete one.

What you have here is a parable on modern American life, and that was the case also in Voss's "Horseplayer". What that means in Voss's treatments are characters that are unusual but not so unusual as to be unbelievable. Beneath their exteriors there are strong emotions and sometimes they erupt in violence. Self-control only works up to a point in some of the Voss characters, and then they do what they have to do. Voss's characters sometimes have a tough time handling sex, ambition, and other drives.

In this story, we have an adulterous and cold pastor (Nicholas Walker) with a dark childhood secret. His wife (Ally Sheedy) hates him but doesn't really know it or admit it yet. His current mistress (Dara Tomanovich) is discovering his real character. Walker and Tomanovich meet up at a motel 30 minutes from town. Sally Kirkland runs it, and she's sex-starved and very unstable.

Walker seeks escape from his current life by faking an accident, but the result is amnesia. This complicates matters considerably. John Savage is competent as an insurance investigator.

The movie feels as if Voss couldn't quite meld the noir and the black comedy. The exaggeration in violence and comedy start to dominate in some respects, but that didn't ruin the movie for me. That's just the way it is.
