The Howling is Reborn

23 November 2009 10:25 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It appears as if our prayers have been answered friends, and werewolves will be following vampires in the great 'classic monsters rebirth' cycle of this century. Universal is hitting hard with The Wolf Man early next year, and there are remakes of An American Werewolf in London and An American Werewolf in Paris are being whispered about in the halls of Hollywood. The only potential downside to all of this is if the Twilight effect kicks in, and future werewolf movies are stripped of their grit and given a glossy, teen-targeted look. Insert the potentially problematic premise of The Howling: Reborn, announced today via Variety. Indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are setting up a remake of the 1981 Joe Dante film, which followed a news anchor being stalked by a killer who turns out to be a werewolf. This new film will follow more of a Gossip Girl meets Twilight, with »

Full Moon: Julie Delpy, Parisian Animal

3 September 2009 8:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As the decade winds down, vampires have finally begun to reclaim their monster movie throne back from the zombies who ruled for most of the Aughts. When will it ever be the lycanthropes turn? I suppose it doesn't help that werewolves aren't as metaphor-flexible as erotic bloodsuckers or mindless hungry drones. To complicate matters, the metaphors those wolves are arguably best suited for are the ones they almost never touch on (puberty and/or menstrual cycles) since they're usually about adult men. The other rich thematic playground they inhabit, that of mankind conquered by his beastly urges, they have to share with all the other monsters. They're a stepchild monster.

But what can you do? As we wait for The Wolf Man to arrive (February 12th, 2010), I thought we'd celebrate the sexy beasts during the full moon each month.

MTV keeps the '80s revival going with Teen Wolf pilot

1 September 2009 8:02 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Michael J. Fox's Teen Wolf was infectious fun back in 1985. By the time we got to Jason Bateman and Teen Wolf Too, a lot of the luster had worn off. Still, MTV thinks there's still plenty to mine from the concept, as they've ordered a pilot for a Teen Wolf series.

MTV VP Liz Gately says, "It has a fresh take and is very different from the original." They go on to explain that it's more similar to An American Werewolf in Paris (not London, but Paris). I'm still trying to wrap my brain around why remakes seem to be all the rage right now. Especially if this remake is so different from the source title. Why is it a remake then?

Have we reached a creative laziness where it's just easier to try and sell the public on a property they've already heard of than something brand new? »

MTV Howling Over Teen Wolf

1 September 2009 1:12 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Back in June we told you that Teen Wolf was the latest title added to the Hollywood remake-palooza. Turns out the Michael J. Fox-less rehash isn't headed for the big screen after all. That's because MTV has just ordered a pilot for a new "Teen Wolf" television series. Don't expect any basketball playing werewolf shenanigans in this one, though. It seems evident that MTV is more interested in courting the Twilight crowd.

According to THR, MTV's potential "Teen Wolf" series will "draw from the horror genre to explore werewolf mythology and include a romantic plot line." MTV's senior VP of development Liz Gateley goes on to make a highly dubious analogy, "It has more of an 'American Werewolf in Paris' feel to it." In what alternate reality where comparing your werewolf project in a positive light with An American Werewolf in Paris does this woman live?

An American Werewolf In London Remake Coming!

2 July 2009 2:00 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Bloody-Disgusting uncovered that Dimension Films are actively pursuing the remake rights for John Landis's classic werewolf flick An American Werewolf In London. Landis himself checked in with B-d and had the following to say: "Yes, Dimension is now in negotiation for the 'An American Werewolf in London' remake rights. Perhaps someone will make a brilliant movie out of it. Regardless, my film comes out on Blu-ray this summer and looks amazing. I was afraid the digital cleaning of the negative would result in too clear a picture and hurt Rick Baker's make-up, when in fact the incredibly crisp detail actually makes Rick stuff look even better!" Let's hope this new movie is more An American Werewolf In London and less An American Werewolf In Paris. (Meaning, practical FX over CGI please?)

Variety confirms that producers Sean and Bryan Furst whom recently produced Daybreakers are setting up the project with Dimension. »

"American Werewolf" Remake Planned

29 June 2009 3:43 PM, PDT | www.ohmygore.com/ | See recent OhMyGore news »

A remake of the horror/dark comedy 1981 classic "An American Werewolf In London" is in the works it seems. Bloody Disgusting reports that the original film's writer/director John Landis has apparently sold off remake rights to the property to Dimension Films, who want to surf on the "Twilight" vague. The original followed two American tourists in England are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists. A poorly received sequel, "An American Werewolf In Paris", opened in 1997 to poor reviews and box-office.... »

Landis’ Werewolf Getting Remake Treatment?

29 June 2009 11:26 AM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

While many feel Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes is destroying the horror world with its endless remakes, The Weinstein Company has been doing its fare share too. They’ve remade John Carpenter’s Halloween (with a sequel set to open in August), are developing a Hellraiser update and according to Bloody Disgusting may next be turning to werewolves. The site has received a tip saying the Weinstein’s have acquired the rights to the 1981 John Landis horror-comedy An American Werewolf in London, which is considered by many to be one of the best Werewolf films ever made. In the original, two American tourists in England are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists. It starred David Naughton, Griffin Dunne, Jenny Agutter and John Woodvine. Rick Baker earned an Oscar for his groundbreaking makeup effects. The film spawned a pseudo-sequel in 1997, An American Werewolf in Paris. »

News: American Werewolf In London Remake?

29 June 2009 7:48 AM, PDT | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Seems so. John Landis, who made the classic horror film about an American tourist bit buy a werewolf who then goes on a killing spree across the streets of London, confirmed with SciFi Wire that the rights-holders - not him - are actively working to get a remake off the ground. ound.

Firstshowing.Net speculates the sudden urge to relaunch the film is based in part of the recent success of Underworld and.... wait for it... The Twilight Saga.  The rights-holders are looking to have something out there and ready to capitalize on all of the New Moon werewolf-love that is sure to hit later this year.

Good idea? Story-wise, no. If you take a look at An American Werewolf In Paris you can see what a crap sequel looks like. I doubt a remake will be much better.

Business-wise, it'll probably make good money at the Box Office and on DVD, »

Trailer For Julie Delpy's The Countess!

12 April 2009 7:00 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

I've always greatly admired the work of Julie Delpy. Sure, I may have first encountered her in An American Werewolf In Paris (the far inferior sequel to An American Werewolf In London), but her performances in Krzysztof Kieslowski's White (as part of the Three Colors trilogy) and later in Before Sunrise & Before Sunset have always impressed me & made me a life long fan of her work.

Needless to say, I've always hoped she'd return  to the genre in some capacity, and while this isn't exactly a "horror" movie, writing, directing and starring in a film based on the real life of Countess Elizabeth Bathory is both impressive and intriguing. Take a look at Delpy as Bathory for yourself in the trailer to her latest film, The Countess below:

The rise and fall of the notorious Countess Bathory who fell a victim to love, conspiracy and her own murderous vanity. »
