Joss Whedon writes us all a letter

10 May 2012 12:06 AM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble) is on course to break through the billion dollar barrier very shortly and its director and writer Joss Whedon has written us all a letter, which is well worth a read!   Dear Friends, Well, it's been quite a weekend. Someday, long from now, I will even have an emotional reaction to it, like a person would. I can't wait! But before I become blinded by this "emotion" experience, there's a few things I'd like to say. Well, type. People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true. And change is good -- change is exciting. I think -- not to jinx it -- that I may finally be recognized at Comiccon. Imagine! Also, with my percentage of "the Avengers" gross, I can afford to buy... [gets call from agent. Weeps manfully. Resumes typing.] ...a fine meal. But Really fine, with truffles and »

Joss Whedon thanks his 'peeps' and says 'Dr. Horrible 2' is still on the board

9 May 2012 3:58 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

In addition to loving him for creating things like "The Avengers" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," Joss Whedon's fans love him for things like what he did Wednesday (May 9): publicly express his gratitude directly to them.

Writing on the all-things-Joss site Whedonesque, Whedon offers a heartfelt thanks for the record box-office weekend for "The Avengers," answers some questions -- including one about the status of the sequel to "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" and the web series "Wastelanders" -- and is just generally Joss-like. First, the thank you:

"People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true. And change is good -- change is exciting. I think -- not to jinx it -- that I may finally be recognized at Comiccon. Imagine! ... And I can get a studio to finance my dream project, the reboot of "Air Bud »

Joss Whedon Promises Fans That the Success of 'The Avengers' Won't Change Him

9 May 2012 3:39 PM, PDT | The Movie Pool | See recent The Movie Pool news »

He also promises that work will soon begin on his dream project; an Air Bud reboot that pits the lovable retreiver in the game of his life..Jai alai.  Jai Alai! Read the full text of Whedon's extremely personal and extremely humorous letter to his fans right after the jump.

Since his Toy Story days, director Joss Whedon has been known for his fantastic wit.  Most of his scripts bare a distinct "Whedon" tone, and its rather obvious to notice when something is written by him.  Even in The Avengers case, the script was classic Whedon.  That said, many fans were worried that the success of The Avengers might "change" Whedon for the worse.  A success of this magnitude has certainly corrupted once geek favorite directors in the past.

So Joss Whedon took to his blog to clear the air a little bit about the success of The Avengers, and »

Read: Joss Whedon's Open Letter to Fans

9 May 2012 12:26 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Before The Avengers went ahead and destroyed all kinds of box office records this past weekend, director Joss Whedon was a cult superhero in his own right. Garnering fans from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Toy Story and Serenity (among a host of other projects), Whedon was the obvious choice to helm Marvel's superhero mash-up. He took to Whedonesque, an online community for Whedonettes, to thank fans new and old. Read the full letter below, including his plans to finally be able to finance his dream project – a reboot of Air Bud (he's kidding… we think). Dear Friends, Well, it's been quite a weekend. Read Joss Whedon’s ‘Thank You’ Letter To Fans For All The Support

9 May 2012 11:56 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Joss Whedon was already a cult hero, bringing the masses the likes of Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse, The Cabin In The Woods, the criminally cancelled Firefly (but we did get the fantastic Serenity from its ashes) and he even got scribbling for Toy Story, fact! If you’ve been away from the planet in the past few weeks, you may have also missed the rather celebrated success of The Avengers or Avengers Assemble…only in the UK.

The latter has been breaking records astonishingly, there’s already been over $700 million taken in ticket sales and it’s only been out for a week in the USA. The rest of the world has taken the behemoth to their collective hearts in the weeks gone by but Whedon hasn’t forgotten the loyal fans who’ve stuck with him throughout the shifting allegiances of Hollywood. We think he deserves this time in the limelight, »

Joss Whedon writes an open letter to his fans

9 May 2012 11:33 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Following quite an eventful month in cinematic terms, Joss Whedon has penned an open letter to his fans.

2012 is already turning out to be quite the year for film, and two of the reasons for that lie at the door of Mr Joss Whedon. The Cabin In The Woods and The Avengers have both been terrific treats, and Whedon has also got the box office returns to match his critical acclaim. About time, too.

Whedon is a man who has a devoted fan base which he has built over his career, one that has seen some ups and downs. But his ability to consistently create intelligent and humorous works marked him as a great talent, and seeing how his projects were mistreated by TV networks was heartbreaking. It makes the wild success of The Avengers in particular all the more sweet. And with that in mind, the man himself has »

Joss Whedon Thanks Fans for the Success of The Avengers

9 May 2012 10:52 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

There has already been plenty of discussion about the record-breaking opening weekend of The Avengers, which easily exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. Comic book fans are celebrating because it means that they will continue to see even more superheroes on the big screen, while Joss Whedon fans are celebrating because the man has finally caught a break after having so many of his projects fail or die prematurely. It is an interesting situation because even though the success of The Avengers is a result of a lot more than just Whedon's involvement, the box office numbers could give him instant clout and the ability to do almost anything he wants for his next project. Never one to remain silent, Whedon took to his Whedonesque message board this week to thank his devoted fans and to discuss what the success of the film might mean for him. He claims that »

Joss Whedon writes Open Letter Thanking Fans for Years of Loyal Support

9 May 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

After taking the Us box office by storm at the weekend, literally breaking records to take the biggest opening weekend with a final tally of $207.4m., Joss Whedon has taken to the web to say thank you to all his loyal fans for the years of support throughout his career.

Writing on a fan-site dedicated to him work, Whedonesque, he goes on to discuss (in a brilliant question-and-answer session with himself) a great few things that include, but are by no means limited to, what’s coming next for him (Much Ado About Nothing), looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises, and his love of TV (which is great).

His adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, he says, is next on his schedule, and he’s set on finishing it this month, which is awesome news in my books. Word first surfaced of the project after it finished shooting in secret, »

If you knew the name Joss Whedon before it became attached to The Avengers, then the man has a few words for you.

Interview - Cobie Smulders Talks Avengers

In an open letter posted to Whedonesque, the brain behind Buffy, Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible and and nearly every emotion I felt as a teenager says thank you to the fans (although he's not sure that word truly encompasses the love he's felt for over a decade) who stuck by him through the low ratings, cancellations, platform test runs and Dollhouse season one.

Interview - Cabin Star Thanks You For Keeping The Secret

His letter is below, in full -- but allow me to speak for The Whedonverse quickly and simply say, Joss -- the pleasure has been all ours.

Dear Friends,

Joss Whedon's always had a passionate group of followers (I count myself among them as a diehard fan of Buffy and pretty much everything that followed except for Dollhouse which just didn't do anything for me). And with the success of The Avengers, that fan group has grown exponentially. However, Whedon hasn't forgotten those fans who've been there all along, and posted a lengthy very Joss-y thank you note on his biggest fansite, Whedonesque, "People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. 10 Great Films Kids Should Watch, But Probably Won’t

I recently re-watched Contagion, and i had a flashback to my original viewing of it… Many months ago I trekked to the local cinema with the wife for the perfect date movie – Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion. Sitting there in the ambient darkness, waves of trailers washing over me, something suddenly caught my eye. A family of two adults, and two young children, were making their way down the stairway and corralling themselves four seats in the lower corner of the room. Were they in the wrong screening? Lion King 3D was playing next door, maybe they’d gotten lost. Should I tell them? It would be irresponsible of me not to, right? No one (and I mean No One) wants to miss the opening of Lion King. A plethora of exotic wildlife painstakingly animated as they make a pilgrimage across the Serengeti to the banal sounds of Elton John’s »

Watch: The Most Star-Studded Film Ever?

If you thought some of Jimmy Kimmel's previous sketches had a lot of star cameos, then wait until you see his trailer for "Movie: The Movie."

Bringing all the best (i.e. worst) qualities of blockbuster hits like "Armageddon", "Valentine's Day" and "Air Bud" together into one action-packed mess, "Movie: The Movie" delivers in all the right ways. George Clooney in a wheelchair? Check. Gabourey Sidibe as Black Hitler? Check. Matt Damon as a bunch of grapes? Check mate. How has no one actually made this movie?

And the cherry on top is the passionate, overwrought anthem sung by the creepy-leer guy himself, Stephen Tyler, and featuring such lyrics as, "Freedom is meatier than a meteor of freedom."

The trailer features no less than Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Martin Scorsese, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Don Cheadle, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Samuel L. Jackson, Cameron Diaz, Jj Abrams, »

Warrior Blu-ray Review: A Package To Match the Quality of this Visceral Tale of Conflict and Redemption

20 February 2012 3:50 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Film Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The problem with any film that has a sport at the centre of its narrative, even if its only just a vehicle to drive a more human arc (as with The Fighter and The Wrestler) is that it will forever be classified in the basement category along with all the other “sports movies”, like The Mighty Ducks and The Longest Yard. And Air Bud.

But if The Wrestler, Moneyball and The Fighter have taught us anything, it’s that films about sportsmen and women can be great, and well worthy of awards nominations, without the need to be saccharine or worthy like The Blind Side. Those films, as well as older sports classics like The Champ, This Sporting Life and even Rocky have gone some way to reclaim the label and remove some of the stigma, proving that sports film can offer something to a »
