The Playlist's 10 Most Anticipated Blockbusters Of The Summer Season

30 April 2012 7:58 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It feels like the summer movie season has been underway for some time already, given that last month saw the arrival of huge blockbuster "The Hunger Games," as well as "21 Jump Street," an R-rated comedy that's taken an enormously impressive $130 million. And that's even without mentioning those that hoped to be big box office stuff, but fell at the first: "John Carter," already taking its place among the annals of the great flops, and "Wrath Of The Titans," which has taken less than half what its predecessor made domestically.

So yes, 2012 has already brought its share of blockbusters, but we're just getting started. Next week brings "The Avengers," the first salvo in a four-month-long cascade of tentpoles that cost more than the Gdp of a third-world country, star-laden comedies and animated extravaganzas. Between now and the middle of August, every single week brings at least one major studio movie, and »

Sean Penn Joining Walter Mitty?

23 April 2012 5:06 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

If you thought that Al Pacino cropping up as a Sandler-lady-loving version of himself in Jack And Jill was odd casting, the bar may now be raised. According to Deadline, Sean Penn – not known for appearing in big studio comedies – is now negotiating to play a role in The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty.Ben Stiller has finally wrangled the comedy out of development hell, where it has been stuck for years. Working from a script by Steve Conrad, Stiller will direct and star in the tale of a timid magazine photo editor who finds his only satisfaction living through fanciful dreams, including those about co-worker Kristen Wiig. But then a negative goes missing and Mitty must go out on a hunt to find it,  which leads him on an actual adventure, and changes his life.Penn’s role is being kept quiet, but is apparently “small” yet “pivotal.” Perhaps »

Blu-ray Review: Oscar-Winning ‘The Descendants’ with George Clooney

22 March 2012 2:26 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” was one of my favorite films of 2011 and, no, nothing has changed in the last 12 weeks. The window between theatrical release and Blu-ray has become so small that there’s not even time really to allow a film to age or change between a film review and a Blu-ray review. “The Descendants” was great a few months ago. And it’s still great.

Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

So, for my opinion of the film itself, check out my Chicago International Film Festival Preview, film review, and my piece on the Best Films of 2011.

But how’s the Blu-ray? Fox wasn’t about to drop the ball here and they’ve truly improved their HD transfers for new theatrical films over the last few years. “The Descendants” looks good, near the high end of Fox HD transfers, which is still a bit below Warner Bros. or Universal. »

Interview: Actor Russ Tamblyn Tells Classic Hollywood Stories

11 February 2012 1:22 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Russ Tamblyn has seen it all. In a show business career that is now over 60 years old, he has gone from child star (”Father of the Bride”) to Oscar nominee (”Peyton Place”) to classic role (”West Side Story”) and cult hero (”Twin Peaks”). With a span like that, he has collected a few stories.

Tamblyn made an appearance in Chicago in 2010 at the Hollywood Palms in Naperville, Illinois, and did an interview with HollywoodChicago.com regarding the 50th Anniversary of the film “West Side Story.” After talking about that experience, he began to reminisce about his other career exploits. In a talk that lasted close to an hour, he spoke about the transition from child to adult star, encounters with Elvis Presley and adventures with rocker Neil Young, director David Lynch and actor Glenn Ford.

Bryan Cranston, star of Breaking Bad is heading to Cleveland! Cranston, who seems determined to keep himself busy while on hiatus from his current show, will be lending his voice to The Cleveland Show on the upcoming February 19th episode.

For those who don`t watch the Fox program, The Cleveland Show is an animated series that premiered in September of 2009 as part of the “Animation Domination” line up for the network. The show creators, Seth MacFarlane, Mike Henry, and Richard Appel came up with the idea as a spin-off from Family Guy, which was also created by MacFarlane. The series focuses on the life of Cleveland Brown, his son Cleveland Jr., his wife Donna and her kids – Roberta and Rallo. From the date of its debut, The Cleveland Show has received mixed reviews. Critics have remarked on its similarities to Family Guy and American Dad! Which incorporate crude content and foul language. »

In preparation for its release in March, cast and crew members of the forthcoming Disney sci-fi extravaganza John Carter were in the capital this week to promote the film. I, along with seemingly every other film blogger and journalist not at the London Critic’s Circle Awards was in attendance at the Apollo cinema to see a selection of preview clips and partake in a Q&A with the film’s star, Taylor Kitsch, animation whiz Eamonn Butler visual effects wizard Sue Rowe. Producer Kevin Kurtz was on hand to introduce the film and its concept and director Andrew Stanton introduced the clips in pre-recorded videos.

John Carter (formerly known by the less vague denominator, John Carter of Mars) is based on the books of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs. Carter is an American Civil War veteran that is mysteriously teleported to Mars, where he finds warring races, scary alien »
