‘Big Little Lies’: Inside Reese Witherspoon’s Twisty Foray Into Television

Blame it on the weather. It was unseasonably cold in Monterey, Calif., when, deep into the 88-day shoot for “Big Little Lies” — after 10 straight days of late nights — the unthinkable happened: The usually unflappable Reese Witherspoon lost her temper. Faced with a difficult emotional scene, she yelled at director Jean-Marc Vallée.

Recalling the incident a few months later over tea at the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, the two — who share an easy, effortless camaraderie — laugh at the memory. “I’m so sorry!” she tells him, sheepishly hiding her face in her hands. In his French-accented lilt, Vallée says, “I felt so sad because I knew it wasn’t her.”

But back in that fraught moment on the set, he turned to her and said, “Great! Let’s do it,” pushing her to channel her frustration into her performance. Vallée reports that Witherspoon — perfectly cast as the fast-talking, multitasking mother of two, Madeline »

‘Burning Sands’ Review: Hazing Drama Is Gripping, If Difficult to Stomach — Sundance 2017

27 January 2017 2:12 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Hazing rituals, with their elitist foundations and untold mysteries, have long captured the imaginations of storytellers both comedic and dramatic. Most recently explored in the Nick Jonas vehicle “Goat,” but the topic is basically a subgenre at this point — from Todd Phillips’ documentary “Frat House” to the soapy thriller “The Skulls,” for comedic effect in the Zac Efron vehicle “Neighbors,” and, perhaps most famously, in Richard Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused.”

Burning Sands,” Gerard McMurray’s entry in the hazing canon, is set at a fictional Historically Black College (Hbcu) called Frederick Douglass University. McMurray, an associate producer on Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station,” draws from personal experience to make his directorial debut. (McMurray co-wrote the script with Christine Berg). From the film’s overtly dark tone, it is safe to assume McMurray is critical of the most brutal hazing rituals, even if he glorifies them with his camera. The »

24 January 2017 5:36 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

If you’ve never watched “The Blacklist”, you’re missing out on one of the most intriguing shows on TV today. On the show, Raymond “Red” Reddington is the anti-hero, a wanted fugitive, former secret agent, and a brilliant man with his fingers in innumerable illegal, (Ok maybe some of them might be legal), goings-on all over the world. The character is played flawlessly by James Spader. You may remember James from things like “Sex Lies & Videotape”, “Stargate”, “The Practice”, “Boston Legal”, “Less Than Zero”, “Pretty in Pink”, “Crash”, “White Palace”, “Secretary”, and as the smarmy lawyer in “Wall Street”.
