"The Warriors" Cast Reunion And Screening At Coney Island, August 29

13 August 2009 10:33 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 The Warriors – no other movie of the Seventies captured New York City quite like this gritty, visceral, gang drama did when it premiered in February of 1979, making The Big Apple look not only rotten to the core, but also possibly – gloriously -- like the most dangerous city in the world. For those of you who remember the movie when it first premiered in '79, it made a lasting impact that was both exhilirating and terrifying, summed up in one of the most widely quoted lines in movie history: Warriors.....come out and plaaaayeeeaaaayyy!

.

Thirty years later, the cast of this legendary film is reuniting in Coney Island for a momentous 30th anniversary celebration on Saturday, August 29th. The event is a benefit / fundraiser for Coney Island USA, the resident not-for-profit corporation that produces some of NYC’s best loved summer programming, such »

Heroes picks up a Ghostbuster

12 August 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Former Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson has "seen sh*t that'll turn you white!" I guess that makes him the perfect guy to chase down fugitives in the strange, super-powered world of NBC's Heroes.

The veteran genre actor will join the cast of Heroes next season as Captain Lubbock, a Baltimore cop hunting down another character on the show.

It's good to see Hudson returning to TV. He's a great actor who has turned in some memorable TV performances in the past (HBO's Oz, Desperate Housewives), but he always seems to get stuck working in the B-movie ghetto.Continue reading Heroes picks up a Ghostbuster

'G.I. Joe' Star Makes His Case For 'Black Panther' Role

7 August 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Comic book lovers, it's time to break out your pencils and notepads. Repeat after me: Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. A difficult name to pronounce, yes, but an important one all the same -- this is the man whose leading the pack to play Black Panther, according to the actor himself.

MTV News first broke the story that Triple-a was talking with Marvel Studios about "Black Panther," and now the actor is speaking with other outlets about the character. Collider interviewed the "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" star about the potential superhero project, which Akinnuoye-Agbaje described as a literal dream role.

"It's always been a dream of mine to play a black superhero and, in particular, the Black Panther," said Akinnuoye-Agbaje in a video interview. "There is some truth to [the rumors] that we're now staying up, sitting down and taking talks with Marvel about developing that project for me."

The clearly enthused actor gushed about the role, »

Baltimore Was Established To Bring Us 'The Wire': Wake-Up Video

30 July 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Baltimore, Maryland has a lot of nicknames. B-More. Charm City. The City That Reads. Bodymore, Murderland. Monument City. The lively city has given the world Baltimore club music, former Vice President Spiro Agnew, David Byrne, Parker Posey, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Upton Sinclair and filmmaker John Waters, and it was officially established on this day in 1729. Perhaps the city's greatest cultural contribution (in this millennium, anyway) was providing a setting and inspiration for "The Wire," the shockingly gritty and realistic HBO series that portrayed the struggle between law enforcement, government and the drug lords who threaten everyday life. It was an incredibly complex, subtle show that built a remarkably deep tapestry of characters and locations that reflected Baltimore better than any piece of fiction has ever depicted a city (for better or worse, of course).

"The Wire" also contributed to the music world, relying a great deal on local musicians and »

Marvel Considering The Black Panther Film

MTV News caught up with actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (GI Joe, The Bourne Identity, "Lost," "Oz"), who said that he's currently working with Marvel to bring "The Black Panther" to the big screen. "We're talking to Marvel about 'Black Panther,'" he said. "This is the first round, so you know, hopefully they'll look at 'G.I. Joe' and see the potential. But it's about time we have a black superhero, isn't it?" Akinnuoye-Agbaje added that he feels this is the perfect time to have the film greenlit. "He's from a fictional village in Africa and the timing is so right for that kind of character to come through," he said. "And while I'm in my prime, this is the time. We've got [U.S. President Barack] Obama, now we need something on screen to represent, so... 'Panther,' man." Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) was previously rumored to play The Black Panther. He is »

I apologize for using his "Lost" name in the title, but “Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje” would have used up the entire character limit by itself. In any case, the "Oz," "Lost" and soon-to-be G.I. Gay Of The Dead 19 – Underground filmmaker, Pervula’s Armando Muñoz

20 July 2009 2:28 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

I met Armando Muñoz at the Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors after moderating the panel on The Lair. He approached me in the dealer’s room and we had a nice chat. I left with one of his films in hand and was soon watching one of the more twisted shorts I’ve seen in a long time.

A week later I had the complete Armando Muñoz collection in my hands – Killer Krapper, Mime After Midnight, Panty Kill, The Terrible Old Tran, Pervula and They Have No Shame. Each one more twisted than the next.

When I first started writing this blog, I vowed I would write about people and films that I found interesting, regardless of whether or not they were well known. With that in mind, I present should-be-better-known, out, underground filmmaker Armando Muñoz.

New on DVD: Revolutionaries, characters, cops and more

7 July 2009 3:12 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

L'amour fou against the barricades, fiction coming to life and TV's funniest gay cop are among the highlights of this week's new DVDs.

Read on for more!

One of the sleeper hits of the 2008 gay film festival circuit (and not 2007, despite what the DVD cover says) was Ma Saison Super 8 (My Super 8 Season), a rare film that puts the tumultuous events of Paris in May 1968 into a queer context.

A brash and openly gay young student fights to have his issues included in the leftist upheaval while he carries on a passionate but doomed romance with a conflicted factory worker. It's a movie that reminds us of all the gay men who were silenced during history's great moments of progressive thought. (Still waiting for the Bayard Rustin biopic.)

Lovely by Surprise matches its fictional-characters-come-to-life plot with a cast of terrific character actors, including gay thespians Austin Pendleton (Oz, What's Up, »

Red Carpet: Radioactive Lohan & Gangster Depp

1 July 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

It's that time again, Red Carpet Lineup. Here's a (truly) random sampling of actors at events this past week. Let's check in with...

Ever classy Lindsay Lohan who celebrated her 23rd birthday (it's actually tomorrow) at a Vegas pool wearing that, flashing a peace sign, and sporting bright blue contacts. Unless she's been spending too much time on Nevada's nuclear testing grounds, those are contacts. I should never ever look at Lohan as she's become the avatar of Lost Potential. She found the empty calories of fame more enticing than the rich nutrients of good actressing.

Public Enemies opens today and it should be an interesting test of Johnny Depp's box office pull. The public is generally averse to period dramas but they do like gangster crime films so it's a bit of a toss up, really. It's already on IMDb's Top 250 but that's typical for masculine "cool" movies when they first open. »

Wicked: The Movie - Coming 2010!

29 June 2009 10:42 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Wicked takes the story of The Wizard of Oz and turns it on its head. It tells the classic story from the perspective of the (not so) Wicked Witch of the west, Elphaba, and her her unlikely friendship with Glinda, the good witch of the north. Their friendship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace.

The plot is set mostly before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas, and includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as a backstory. You will finally understand why the Lion is so cowardly, how the tin man came to have no heart, where the ruby slippers came from and grow to love and understand the magical characters of Oz better than ever before!

James Purefoy and Tom Fontana talk The Philanthropist, the interview

24 June 2009 8:32 PM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

NBC.s latest drama, .The Philanthropist,. is a well-cast and lushly staged roman á clef of sorts, of an altruistic billionaire who consulted with the producers and actors for this effort. Only one episode was sent for review, and it is hard to say how this series will unfold and hold up based on the premiere. Given that Tom Fontana (Oz, Homicide: Life on the Street, St. Elsewhere) is showrunning this effort, it has great promise. "The Philanthropist.s" biggest calling card for me is James Purefoy, who portrays flawed billionaire Teddy Rist, based on Bobby Sager, the real deal. Purefoy captured me in the short-lived and dearly missed HBO series, .Rome,. as the swagger-filled Mark Antony, lover of »

Mr. Eko Wants to Go Back to the Island

23 June 2009 5:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

According to a recent TV Guide interview, one of my favorite characters from Lost who, sadly, got eaten by the smoke monster, would like to return to the show. Like most fans of Lost, I was pretty disappointed when Mr. Eko, played by the awesome Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (previously seen on Oz),  seemed to die in season three. Eko was a very interesting character who helped Locke discover new ways of looking at things. Plus, he was just cool.

Adewale, who will guest star in the Aug 7 episode of Monk and appears in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, now says, according to the interview, that he wants to go back to the island. The actor says he left the show after his parents died in 2006, but he’d like to return to give his character some closure.

“To be able to give that rich character some completion would be nice, »
