Lone Star Cinema: Varsity Blues

29 May 2012 11:30 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Varsity Blues is truly of its time. When the film was released in 1999, star James Van Der Beek was riding high on his fame from popular teen soap Dawson's Creek. This was the first movie produced by MTV Films, and the soundtrack includes such late '90s hits as Collective Soul's "Run" and the Foo Fighters' "My Hero." Buzz Bissinger's influential book Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, and a Dream had been published nine years previous, but had yet to be dramatized for either the big or small screen.

Filmed in Austin -- as well as Georgetown, Elgin and Taylor -- Varsity Blues follows Mox (Van Der Beek), a high school senior in fictional small-town West Canaan, Texas. He dates his friend's younger sister, Julie (Amy Smart), who works at the Top Notch. He dreams of going to Brown University, and only plays football because his dad makes him. »

Abe Schwartz: 10 Things With 'Parks and Recreation' Writer, Aisha Muharrar

25 May 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

One of my favorite shows is Parks and Recreation. I recently had the chance to sit down, drink iced tea and talk with staff writer, Aisha Muharrar. Aisha penned several of my favorite episodes, including "Born and Raised" and "Operation Ann" this season. Here are ten things that you should know about Aisha, who is both insanely talented and a much more patient iced tea drinker than me.

1. Even when she was just a kid, Aisha knew she wanted to be a writer. While in high school, she wrote a non-fiction book entitled More than a Label. Aisha attended Harvard, where she majored in English and wrote for The Harvard Lampoon to hone her comedy writing skills. (An avid fan of The Simpsons growing up, she was aware that this was where many of The Simpsons' writers first got their start.)

2. She loved The WB shows (Felicity, Buffy, Dawson's Creek »

James Van Der Beek bored by Dawson

24 May 2012 10:01 PM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

James Van Der Beek got 'very bored' towards the end of 'Dawson's Creek'. The 35-year-old actor - who starred as Dawson Leery in the teen drama for its entire six-season run - grew tired of portraying the protagonist in the series so he was glad to do something different by starring in dark comedy 'Rules of Attraction', an adaptation of a Bret Easton Ellis novel, alongside Jessica Biel. He said: 'When 'Dawson's ended I just reacted to having been on this highly successful teen show for the last six years. I get very bored doing the same thing so, for example, I did 'Rules of Attraction' because I felt finally I had a chance to try something like »

Devastating News: Joshua Jackson And Diane Kruger May Be Engaged

24 May 2012 9:03 AM, PDT | Celebsology | See recent Celebsology news »

Pacey Witter fans, brace yourselves. It looks like Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger might be engaged. And if not, they will be taking that next step some time over the next few months. While out at the "Nights in Monaco" gala benefit for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the William J. Clinton Foundation at the Hôtel de Paris Wednesday night, a source told E! Online that the Fringe star is headed for marriage.

"He said he was looking for the 'perfect engagement gift," a guest said.

Jackson, 33, and Kruger, 25, have been together for six years. Looking more in love than ever on several Cannes red carpet recently, the two saying "I Do" wouldn't be all that surprising. Just dreadful for his fans.

He clearly treats the actress great though. He went home with a $45,000 necklace with 11.7 carats of white diamonds set in 18-karat rose gold the night of the auction. »

Planet Earth Live | The Fish Market: Inside Billingsgate | Freddie Flintoff Goes Wild | Don't Trust The B**** In Apartment 23 | Grandma's House | House

Planet Earth Live

8pm, BBC1

The general consensus on this globe-trotting nature show, fronted by Richard Hammond and Countryfile's Julia Bradbury, has been largely negative, with Hammond criticised for cracking jokes rather than getting to grips with the subject. Tonight's instalment brings the series to a close with speculation about the future of the animals involved. Considering the scorn the show has received, maybe it should go out quietly before people start asking how much it cost. Ben Arnold

The Fish Market: Inside Billingsgate

9pm, BBC2

The way of doing things at the London fish market of Billingsgate has essentially been unchanged since Elizabethan times: "tenants", or fish merchants, trade from 2am, but fish may not be moved until a bell rings at 5am – and then only by licensed fish porters. »

Tom Cruise Still Mesmerised By Wife Katie Holmes

15 May 2012 6:31 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Tom Cruise has dispelled persistent rumours his marriage to Katie Holmes is crumbling behind closed doors, insisting he's incredibly happy with their "very special" relationship.

The Mission: Impossible star began dating Holmes in 2005 and he famously jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey's TV couch as he professed his undying love for his new girlfriend, just weeks into their whirlwind romance. They welcomed daughter Suri in April 2006 and wed later that year.

Recent tabloid reports suggest the couple is on the verge of a split - but the actor has brushed off the speculation by gushing about his wife and admitting he's still mesmerised by everything she does.

Cruise reveals he felt an instant attraction to the former Dawson's Creek star the moment he met her - and just laying eyes on her brings a smile to his face every day.

He tells Playboy magazine, "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better."

And the Hollywood actor reveals he keeps their chemistry alive by organising intimate meals to give the pair time to bond.

He adds, "I'm a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don't know what to say - I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special." »

Snap Judgments on the New Fox Shows

Vulture's TV critic, Matt Zoller Seitz, will be watching and evaluating the early clips and concepts of each of the new shows unveiled at this year's Upfronts. From Kevin Williamson, writer of Scream and creator of The Vampire Diaries and Dawson's Creek.Gut reaction: The world certainly doesn't need any more stories about brilliantly diabolical serial killers and the genius burnout law enforcement agents trying to catch them. New TV Season Breakdown: Fox

14 May 2012 7:18 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the second announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on Fox.

Former stalwart "House" is done, last year's two new high-concept dramas "Terra Nova” and “Alcatraz" fizzled, and ratings juggernaut "American Idol" saw quite a precipitous drop-off this past season. Yet the Murdoch network remains robust with last year's successful launch of "New Girl" and "The X Factor" helping cover up the deficiencies. The new schedule boasts two important elements - another attempt to launch a four show comedy block on Tuesdays despite failed attempts in the past, and the move of "Glee" to the prestigious (but competitive) Thursday 9pm slot.

Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the spy-as-a-photojournalist thriller "The Asset", the Cuba Gooding Jr.-led legal drama »

Springtime brings with it a slew of new television shows. Shows that, if they're lucky enough to strike a chord with viewers, will land a spot on the network fall schedules. One sitcom that has started out of the gate strong is ABC's Don't Trust The B**** In Apartment 23. Set in New York, City, the series, created by Nahnatchka Khan (Family Guy), puts together a naive Indiana transplant named June (Dreama Walker), who ends up being roommates with wild child Chloe (Krysten Ritter, aka 'the B****"). The colorful Chloe also happens to be BFFs with actor James Van Der Beek.

Van Der Beek is best known for his title role in the teen drama Dawson's Creek, and on this show he plays an exaggerated, egocentric version of himself. This fictional Van Der Beek also has a devoted gay assistant. Enter Luther, played by Ray Ford, »

Evan Rachel Wood Rallying Fans Against Controversial North Carolina Bill

8 May 2012 12:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Bisexual actress Evan Rachel Wood has called on residents in her native North Carolina to vote against a proposed same-sex marriage ban during a state-wide poll on Tuesday.

Voting in North Carolina began early Tuesday morning and The Ides of March star is now rallying support for the gay community by urging Twitter.com fans to shut down Amendment One, which would declare marriage between a man and a woman the only valid domestic legal union.

Wood, who grew up in Raleigh, writes, "if the amendment passes it will prevent the state from giving committed couples rights to allow them to order their relationships, including threatening their ability to determine the disposition of their deceased partner's remains; to make medical decisions if their partner is incapacitated; and to allow second-parent adoptions in order to ensure that both partners have a legal tie to, and financial responsibilities for, the children they are raising...

"The amendment is much more than Gay marriage. It can also effect the rights of opposite sex couples. Do the right thing Nc! make me proud Please get retweeting. Get people informed. So many families and children will be affected.

"Bottom line. The law shouldn't be hand in hand with a certain religion. You have the right to believe what you want... But you cannot, repeat Cannot take away another's freedom because of what You believe. If every sin was a law, then jails would be overcrowded with adulterers."

Wood wasn't the only celebrity speaking out to protest the controversial legislation - former Dawson's Creek star Busy Phillips tweets, "I lived in Nc for two years, during DC (Dawson's Creek). I Know the people there will do the right thing! voteagainst".

And actress and activist Mia Farrow writes, "Gay marriage is a question of human rights . Discrimination is always- under all circumstances - wrong".

The voting on the proposed constitutional amendment on Tuesday coincides with the state's Republican presidential primary election. »

Law & Order: Svu Review: Dawson's Creep

2 May 2012 10:41 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Svu always has some creepy facts that increase our knowledge of the appalling world of sex crimes. And this week, it was genetic sexual attraction (Gsa), a condition that causes people to be sexually attracted to parents, siblings and other family members if they are separated at a young age.

Gross!

The topic is pretty taboo and, in fact, was explored in the aptly titled episode "Taboo" during the show's seventh season. In that episode, Ella Christiansen reconnected with her long-lost father and literally started making babies with him, abandoning her newborn in the trash.

"Father Dearest" may have tread some familiar territory, but it definitely added a much more menacing father-figure with James Van Der Beek's Sean. Unlike Ella's father, Sean purposefully sought out these girls for one reason: revenge.
