19-year-old Argentina Martin has a nearly fatal drug overdose. After that his mother sends him to Madrid, where his film director father (also called Martin) lives with his new much younger lover Alicia and gay actor friend Dante.

This movie is based on a novel by the Spanish writer Javier Marías, who refused the adaptation of his work "Todas las almas" ("All the souls"). After a long time, an old Oxford professor, Robert Rylands, comes back to the lives of Albert, his lover who was abandoned by him, and Albert's sister, who got pregnant of Mr. Rylands and her daughter is almost 10 years old. Albert is very ill and the ghosts of the past emerge to their lives and come to an end with the last journey of Robert Rylands.
