Zulawski plays loud power chords on a sexy female instrument
A young archeology professor and his student minions dig up a site and discover the mummified body of a shaman. A feral young woman appears on the scene, who's referred to only as "she" or the "Italian girl" and might be a living incarnation of the shaman. He takes her to her brother's apartment to offer it to her as a sublet. Minutes later, he *bleeps* her in a kind of "Last Tango in Warsaw" scene, but it's obvious from the get-go she's bat-sh!t crazy. She basically stalks him after that, becoming one of his students and following him around, which he barely reacts to except to have sex with her a few more times. Most curiously, he dresses her up in the shortest glute-baring mini-dress you're likely to see and takes this obvious nutjob to a party his fiancée is having. Then he finds out his priest-brother committed suicide and begins to ask as crazy (perhaps possessed?) as she does and they have MORE hot, frenzied sex. . .
Polish director Andrej Zulawski has some VERY serious fans, but most people would be very confused by his films. I'm somewhere in between. I got a lot of out his first film "Possession" and his later films with Sophie Marceau, but he was sometimes like a band playing a single power chord frenetically and loudly until you just feel battered into submission. All the performances here pretty much start out over-the-top and stay there, especially Iwona Petrie who's like an extreme bi-polar permanently stuck in the most manic phase. A lot of Zulawski characters are basically "possessed", but nobody in this movie re-acts in any kind of rational manner to the possessed characters (unlike Sam Neil who was occasionally sober and lucid in "Possession"), and NOTHING in this movie is subtle. Zulawski uses the kind of pounding rock soundtrack that seems to be favored by Euro directors from Dario Argento to Lars Von Trier, but it's definitely overkill here.
Petrie is not as talented as Isabelle Adjani and her constant histrionics are not nearly as effective as Adjani's sudden, furious bouts of histrionics in "Possession". She also doesn't seem like a true collaborator of the director like Sophie Marceau (who became his wife) later was. She's more like a blunt instrument he strums his power chords on. Petrie is sexy and the sex scenes are very hot, but I don't think most sane guys would really want to hop into the sack with a girl so deranged and animalistic (and they sure wouldn't encourage her to perform oral sex on them . . .). Like other Zulawski movies, I'm sure there's a lot more to this when you can get below the very abrasive surface, but it's hard to get below the abrasive surface of this one.
