Diplo Sets It Off

17 May 2012 7:34 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

"I wanna set it off," shrieks a helium-filled voice, setting Diplo's latest track into motion. "Set It Off," which we heard a sample of late last year, carries on with a lazy electro drone, releasing its beats like a balloon sputtering out air. The track, much in the vein of his Major Lazer work, is off Diplo's forthcoming Ep, Express Yourself, out June 12 on Mad Decent.

Straight Outta Compton: My 8th Grade Dream Comes True

11 April 2012 9:10 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Yeah, feast your eyes on that little piece of hipster cred.  That is my official membership card in the N.W.A fan club, acquired in the halcyon days of 1991, when I was even more suburban and whitebread than I am now.  And finally my other favorite group of junior high (tied with Public Enemy) will have their own bio-pic.

Director F. Gary Gray should be no stranger to we crime-fiends, whether he’s remembered fondly for such films as the 2003 remake of The Italian Job or 1996′s Set It Off (featuring a pre-Joyful Noise Queen Latifah), or remembered angrily for such garbage as 2009′s hyphen-less bore Law Abiding Citizen or the unforgivably bad adaptation of Be Cool, from Elmore Leonard’s novel of the same name.  Despite his missteps in the past, Gray is a good director, and for a story like N.W.A’s, I can »

F. Gary Gray will direct that N.W.A. biopic

10 April 2012 1:41 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Continuing the pairing of primarily attitude-free—or, at least, attitude-abated—filmmakers with attitude-having gangster rap crew N.W.A., director F. Gary Gray has withdrawn from the Captain America 2 race to direct Straight Outta Compton, and bring to New Line’s long-gestating N.W.A. biopic the same unfussy, serviceable skills he contributed to movies like Law-Abiding Citizen and Set It Off. Of course, a more apt reference from Gray’s career here would probably be Friday, as this project represents a reunion for Gray and Ice Cube—a reunion Cube was apparently more interested in than one with »

Dr. Dre To ‘Thaw’ Out Evil Yukon Ice For Upcoming Horror Film

22 March 2012 6:30 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Now that he has the tacky headphone market locked up, Dr. Dre is once again setting his sights on Hollywood. The rap music mogul has appeared in films such as Set It Off and Training Day but will be now expand to the producing game with his newly launched Crucial Films and Variety has news on their latest feature.

The film is a horror/thriller titled Thaw and comes from the mind of Dre’s producing partner Daniel Schinder. Following an “ancient evil that emerges from the rapidly melting ice in the Yukon,” they’ve signed Vik Weet to write the film. Weet is also attached to Renny Harlin‘s thriller about the 1959 Dyatlov Pass incident, where a group of hikers were found dead in the mountains.

The idea of evil coming out of melting ice doesn’t exactly send a tingle down my spine, but I’ll be interested »

Dr. Dre knows beats and he's one of the best at verbally eviscerating his enemies. But now the reclusive rap icon and music mogul is getting ready to enter a whole new arena of battle: the slasher movie.

According to Variety, Dre is set to co-produce the horror thriller "Thaw" for the Crucial Films movie banner. The script for the film will be written by Vik Weet, with a story focusing on an "ancient evil that emerges from the rapidly melting ice in the Yukon."

Variety noted that Weet curiously has also written another script for an as-yet-untitled thriller, to be directed by action veteran Renny Harlin about the investigation into the 1959 Dyatlov Pass incident, where nine experienced hikers were found dead in Russia's Ural Mountains.

Morning Brew - Wednesday, January 4: Rachel Maddows covers the Caucuses, Kate Moennig on her private life

4 January 2012 7:48 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Good morning!

If you have cable, you'll be privy to the ID Channel's new series on gruesome murders, which includes one about actual lesbian vampire killers in Australia. I'm so going to watch all 26 episodes of Killer Trials: Judgement Day, although I think they could have picked a better name.

Out Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy has won the Costa Poetry Prize. Between her and Kay Ryan, lesbians are winning all the poetry awards!

Aubrey O'Day has joined the new season of Celebrity Apprentice and she'll be playing for Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (Glsen). If she wins, all the money goes to them, the charity of her choice. Go Aubrey!

Meghan and Cindy McCain have posed again for NOH8, in case you forgot they support marriage quality.

While we're on the subject of politics, Rachel Maddow did an impeccable job reporting on the Iowa Caucuses for MSNBC last night. »
