Happy Halloween! Well, almost. The haunted holiday is just one day away and we thought we would prepare by celebrating all of our favorite TV and movie witches. Whether it's Fiona (Jessica Lange) from American Horror Story: Coven or a nicer spell-caster like Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, there's plenty of famous small screen witches to choose from. But let's not forget all the famous movie witches, like Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) from the Harry Potter series, Winifred Sanderson (Bette Midler) from Hocus Pocus of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. So which famous TV or movie witch are you most like? To celebrate Halloween, play our »

Witchcraft Wednesdays: The Salving Calm of ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’

29 October 2014 6:49 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Jiji, I’ve decided not to leave this town. Maybe I can stay and find some other nice people who will like me and accept me for who I am.

In a month full of horror and malevolent covens and blood-curdling scares, I offer now the soothing respite of Hayao Miyazaki’s beautiful and serene Kiki’s Delivery Service. Possibly Miyazaki’s most under-appreciated film, it is surely his most modest, which I mean as a compliment. It is the epitome of Miyazaki’s quiet filmmaking, letting the soft emotion and warm aesthetics of the animation do most of the talking. The fact that Kiki is a witch is beside the point, because this is a coming-of-age story for a young girl committed to helping others but forgetting about herself.

Coming-of-age films for girls are rare enough as it is, and with Kiki’s Delivery Service coming as it did »

Trick Or Treat? The Best and Worst Film Witches

27 October 2014 4:15 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Halloween is almost here and this writer couldn’t be more excited. Halloween is a little like Christmas for my family, we go all out with decorations and treats for the trick-or-treaters. To celebrate the spooky season I’ll be running a week-long series of frightening features, focusing on all the great – and worst – movie monsters; witches, vampires, werewolves and more.

The series kicks-off today with a look at some of the best, and some of the worst, movie witches. Witches are the original Halloween ‘monster’; October 31st is All Hallows Eve which was, once-upon-a-time, a sacred pagan holiday – until the Christians got rid of it.

Witches are much more prominent in the world of television with shows like Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, and of course Sabrina the Teenage Witch, all featuring a witch as an integral part of the show. This fascination »

"Arrow" Producer Plans "Archie" TV Series

"Arrow" producers Berlanti Productions and Warner Brothers Studios are teaming for "Riverdale," a one-hour drama based on the iconic "Archie" comic book series.

Set in the present in the small fictional town of Riverdale, New York, the story deals with the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge.

Rival Reggie Mantle, slacker best friend Jughead Jones and popular gay character Kevin Keller will all play key roles in the series which will also include characters from other titles in the Archie Comics library like "Josie and the Pussycats".

The project is described as a "bold, subversive take" on the comic which explores the "surrealistic twists of small-town life plus the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade."

The project is being penned by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the Archie Comics Cco who also penned the "Carrie" and "Town That Dreaded Sundown" remakes, the Broadway-bound musical adaptation of "American Psycho, »

Who Are The Leading Guest-Star Candidates for Scandal Season 4?

23 October 2014 4:06 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

I grew up during the heyday of Tgif.  I remember fondly going to my best friend’s house on a Friday after school and we would watch the classics: Family Matters, Step by Step, Boy Meets World, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Those were the glory days – when people would actually stay home on a Friday night and watch wholesome television. ABC even tried to bring the genre back in the mid 2000’s with 8 Simple Rules and Hope and Faith, but by then audiences had stopped caring. Then along came Shonda Rhimes. She first entered the scene in 2005 with a little show called Grey’s Anatomy. Now the writer/producer/director dominates Thursday nights with fan favorite Scandal and new hit How to Get Away with Murder. The night has been dubbed Tgit and has proven to be a ratings success for the alphabet network. Whether you are a fan of Scandal or not, »

A lot of dreams came true tonight, you guys. Actually it was just one dream, and it involved a black cat, a fake gynecologist, and the realization that Sabrina the Teenage Witch ended 11 years ago, and thus we are quite old. But first, American Horror Story clearly hates us and has no respect for the fact that we didn't really want that first clown, since now they've gone and added another. Plus, Arrow went on a trip! One of those shows featured people pouring boiling water on their hands, and it's (probably) not the one you're thinking. Read on for all of our rants and raves! Sticking up for the unpopular kids in geek TV’s playground

From Lori Grimes to Wesley Crusher, Den Of Geek's writers defend some of TV fandoms’ least-loved fictional characters…

Feature

Warning: contains spoilers for The Walking Dead season three, Breaking Bad season five, and Battlestar Galactica.

The force of geek love is strong. So strong, in fact, it’s basically a Newton’s Third Law of Motion kind of deal. Each instance of geek love leads to the simultaneous, opposite force of geek hatred. Wherever a TV character is adored, another will be despised. For every fan of Angel, there’s a critic of Riley Finn. For every Rick and Shane fan, there’s someone shouting “boo” at Lori Grimes. For every Captain Picard nut, there’s a person scribbling devil horns and moustaches on pictures of Wesley Crusher. Geeks love and geeks hate. It is known.

Blu-ray Review: Teen Horror Comedy ‘Vampire Academy’ Fine for Fans

19 May 2014 6:00 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Mark Waters’ “Vampire Academy” is one of the more toothless attempts to make a “fetch” bloodsucker movie for the middle-high school crowd, to use a phrase from his revered teen comedy “Mean Girls”. Based on the six book series written by Rachelle Mead (which has sold 8 million copies worldwide) “Vampire Academy” the movie tackles teenage friendship in the chaos of high school with the same type of Waters’ “I’m not like a regular mom, I’m a cool mom” distance, but with even softer gloves.

That the movie boasts it was adapted by Dan Waters, who scripted “Heathers,” shows that the real shock is missing - either Waters isn’t writing with as provocative a pen, or the images of a shocking high school have changed.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Without the expectations of a “Mean Girls” or even “Heathers,” “Vampire Academy” is passable on its plain, demographic-centered shenanigans where a »
