Good old Cicely Tyson--she is like the leaning post of good performances. She can be counted on again in this remarkable TV movie.
Tyson, a very intelligent and accomplished artist, has a knack for playing traditional-role characters of simplicity ("Sounder" comes to mind), and she showcases her gifts finely here in the role of Jordan, a woman who must fight her family and sacrifice comfort (and sanity) to keep her beloved farm from being sold. Her scene at the beach towards the film's end ("I'm here...I made it!") brought me to tears. What a great expression of the soul.
The supporting cast of veterans and fresh faces is equally grand. The character of Sally, a blind woman who sees through people better than any of us, will make you laugh. Tess Harper's character of Julia, a college professor whose world of independence and intellect is crumbling because she is facing Alzheimer's, will make you cry. Piper Laurie's Wanda (perhaps the film's greatest performance) is too good for words.
Good family entertainment plus intelligent writing and acting always equals greatness. I can think of no better example than "The Road to Galveston." If you are lucky enough to catch it on The Hallmark Channel or the Family Channel, watch it and be entranced.
