When their abusive parents are killed in a car crash, twin sisters Rosie and Violet vow to run away to Kentucky in search of a better life. While on the road, the girls meet up with Pete, a drifter working as a grounds keeper on a derelict army base, who takes them in. Aerial coordination for the movie was done by well known South Carolina skydiver and pilot Bobby Frierson. Bobby made over 6,000 jumps. Nine years after "Ripe" was filmed Bobby died in a skydiving accident on September 11, 2005. He'd previously had a stroke on January 30, 2000. At the time of his death he had five children and five grandchildren. Bobby's buried in Denmark, SC in Denmark Cemetery next to his parents and his sister. After his death Bobby gained five great grandchildren. See more
During the mess hall scene where they bring Pete a hamburger, he pushes it away saying he doesn't eat meat. One of the soldiers then takes a few bites. Nobody touches it again after that, and yet the hamburger repeatedly changes from untouched, to bitten, and then mostly gone. See more
