Denzel Washington: Whitney Houston Was 'My Girl'

18 September 2012 8:34 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

In what may be his most candid interview yet, Oscar winner Denzel Washington shares with GQ magazine the struggles he witnessed through his friendship with the late Whitney Houston.

Washington, 57, and Houston worked together on the 1996 feel-good film The Preacher's Wife, and the actor still refers to Houston as "my girl." He tells GQ, "She had done so well in recovery. And that is the toughest part about addiction. ...That was a monster drug that got ahold of her, it was a mean one. You can’t go back to that one. Nobody beats that."

Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hilton Hotel room on Feb. 12, 2012, the night before the Grammy Awards. She was 48.

Sparkle stars pay tribute to Whitney Houston as 'nurturing' mother figure in final role

24 August 2012 4:43 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The stars of Whitney Houston's final movie say the singing superstar was a "nurturing" figure to the rest of the cast.

Sparkle, set in the 1960s Motown scene, was Whitney's last role before her death in February at the age of 48, but it also marks former American Idol contestant Jordin Sparks' film debut.

Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere, Omari Hardwick, who plays gangster Levi in the film, said Whitney was motherly towards the younger actress.

"Whitney was a mother, aunt, sister figure, but to Jordin a mother figure," he said.

"I would say just very nurturing and patient, and she kind of helped her along in her rookie journey - I thought she did a great job."

Whitney plays the mother of three sisters trying to make their way in the music industry in the remake of the 1970s movie of the same name.

From the Set: Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks Shine in Sparkle

4 April 2012 | Comingsoon.net | See recent Comingsoon.net news »

"I don't think of it as a comeback. I don.t think of it as a pressure. I think of it as a gift God gave me to contribute to a cast of people who are working as hard if not harder than I." .Whitney Houston Though the new remake of the 1976 cult classic musical Sparkle would come to be overshadowed by the untimely death of its star/producer Whitney Houston in February of 2012, the set of the film in Detroit, Michigan on November 1st, 2011 couldn't have had a more positive, electric atmosphere. Houston was a big part of that, and as she sat down to discuss the role, her first feature film since 1996's The Preacher's Wife she seemed not only in tune with that atmosphere but seemed to be generating a great deal of the good vibes herself, as relayed by her co-star, »

Penny Marshall on Whitney Houston: 'She was a great girl'

3 April 2012 5:26 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Penny Marshall deems the recent death of Whitney Houston a "very sad" loss.

"She was a great girl, and we got along fine," the television star turned movie director tells Zap2it about guiding the singer-actress through the 1996 musical drama "The Preacher's Wife" opposite Denzel Washington. "She sang beautifully, but like a baseball player doesn't pitch every day, you had to schedule certain things at certain times. You have to take the actors into consideration."

Marshall also took the use of Houston's vocal talents seriously: "I went to her mom's church in Newark [N.J.] and I went to Denzel's church out here [in Los Angeles], and we auditioned choirs. I had never done anything with music of the current time, because most of the movies I did were period pictures. 'Awakenings' was, certainly 'A League of Their Own' was, and so was 'Riding in Cars With Boys.'"

Whitney Houston stars in trailer for her final film Sparkle

3 April 2012 10:01 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Late singer takes centre stage in trailer for remake of Detroit-set 1976 film about Motown-era girl group

Whitney Houston's final film is advertised through a trailer in which the late singer frequently takes centre stage, despite ostensibly taking a supporting role in the musical.

Sparkle is a remake of the Detroit-set 1976 film of the same name, a personal favourite of Houston's. She plays the mother of three sisters in a 1960s Motown-era girl group who are seen dealing with the fallout of fame and drugs in a story which was inspired by the Supremes. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks (who plays the title character), Cee Lo Green, Mike Epps and Derek Luke also take starring roles.

In the trailer Houston is seen warning her daughters to learn from her character's own ill-fated brush with stardom. She appears in several scenes and even performs a solo number, the gospel song His Eye on the Sparrow. »

Whitney Houston Shines Once More In First Footage From 'Sparkle'

2 April 2012 8:36 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

On February 11, we lost Whitney Houston, one of the great voices of the 20th century, but the "Bodyguard" star will take one final bow in the role she shot for the big razzle-dazzle remake of 1976 cult classic "Sparkle."

The 2012 version will hit theaters on August 17, but TriStar Pictures saw fit to debut some new footage from the trailer on "The Today Show" (via MSNBC), and just this small glimpse announces that her role as faded singer Emma will not only echo her own life struggles but could bring posthumous accolades to the most-awarded female singer of all-time.

Originally intended as a major comeback for the then 48-year-old Houston, who hadn't made a feature since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife," her character is a feisty, proper mother raising three daughters, including the Motown-inspired singing sensation of the title. Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, and lead Jordin Sparks all shine as the sexy trio, »

'Laverne & Shirley's' Cindy Williams: Ron Howard, Penny Marshall were destined to direct

28 March 2012 3:10 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Cindy Williams didn't doubt two of her best-known co-stars would become well-known filmmakers.

The actress played Ron Howard's girlfriend in the 1973 movie classic "American Graffiti," then worked with him again on the ABC sitcom "Happy Days" ... which yielded the hugely successful spinoff "Laverne & Shirley," teaming Williams with Penny Marshall. Still good friends, the women will reunite when their enduringly popular show gets the Fan Favorite honor at the TV Land Awards, to be televised by the nostalgia-driven network Sunday, April 29.

"Ron kept jumping out of the car during 'American Graffiti' and talking to Haskell Wexler, the cinematographer," Williams recalls to Zap2it about making the George Lucas-directed ode to teen life circa 1962. "He'd get back in the car -- we had no dressing rooms, so we'd sit in the car between takes -- and I'd ask him, 'What are you doing?' And he'd say, 'I'm »

Academy pays tribute to Whitney Houston at Oscars

26 February 2012 8:11 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Whitney Houston, the singer and actor who died earlier this month, is featured in the 2012 Oscar's In Memoriam section

Whitney Houston featured prominently in the In Memoriam section of the Academy Award ceremony currently taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Although best known as a musician, she made a respectable contribution to cinema, and in fact was preparing to release a film she produced and acted in before her death earlier this month.

Houston's main claim to movie immortality comes by way of her debut acting role, in the 1992 picture The Bodyguard. Starring opposite Kevin Costner, Houston did well as a musician who becomes romantically entangled with her security guard, though the character appeared similar to her real-life persona. A song on the film's soundtrack, a cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You, became a massive worldwide hit.

In 1995, Houston followed it up with Waiting to Exhale, »

Whitney Houston's death will not derail planned Waiting to Exhale sequel, says studio

Fox 2000 will press ahead with planned follow-up 'in honour' of late singer, who had been set to reprise role in 1995 tearjerker

A planned sequel to the 1995 romantic tearjerker Waiting to Exhale is to move ahead despite the death of Whitney Houston, who had been expected to reprise her role as one of four unlucky-in-love women living in Phoenix, Arizona.

Elizabeth Gabler, of Fox 2000, said the studio would continue production on the follow-up "in honour" of Houston, who died on Saturday in a Beverly Hills hotel room hours before a pre-Grammy awards party that she was due to attend.

Waiting to Exhale was based on the novel by Terry McMillan, and the sequel will draw on McMillan's new book Getting to Happy, which was published in 2010 and continues the story of the lovelorn characters from the earlier tome.

"It's almost in her honour that we think to soldier on," Gabler told the Vulture blog. »
