Princess expressed interest in playing the lead role in a proposed sequel to the 1992 blockbuster, according to Costner
Princess Diana was in line to take the Whitney Houston role in a sequel to 1992 romantic blockbuster The Bodyguard shortly before her death, Kevin Costner has revealed.
Speaking on the Us talk show Anderson, in a recording due to be broadcast in May, Costner said he received the screenplay for the proposed project on 31 August 1997, the day before the princess was killed in a car accident in a Paris tunnel at the age of 36 while trying to escape chasing photographers. The film, tentatively titled The Bodyguard 2, would have seen Diana take a familiar role, that of a princess who requires protection from paparazzi and stalkers. Costner would have reprised his role as former special agent turned bodyguard Frank Farmer, who is charged with keeping her safe.
"Diana and I had been talking about doing Bodyguard 2," said Costner, »

"I don't think of it as a comeback. I don.t think of it as a pressure. I think of it as a gift God gave me to contribute to a cast of people who are working as hard if not harder than I." .Whitney Houston Though the new remake of the 1976 cult classic musical Sparkle would come to be overshadowed by the untimely death of its star/producer Whitney Houston in February of 2012, the set of the film in Detroit, Michigan on November 1st, 2011 couldn't have had a more positive, electric atmosphere. Houston was a big part of that, and as she sat down to discuss the role, her first feature film since 1996's The Preacher's Wife she seemed not only in tune with that atmosphere but seemed to be generating a great deal of the good vibes herself, as relayed by her co-star, »

Penny Marshall deems the recent death of Whitney Houston a "very sad" loss.
"She was a great girl, and we got along fine," the television star turned movie director tells Zap2it about guiding the singer-actress through the 1996 musical drama "The Preacher's Wife" opposite Denzel Washington. "She sang beautifully, but like a baseball player doesn't pitch every day, you had to schedule certain things at certain times. You have to take the actors into consideration."
Marshall also took the use of Houston's vocal talents seriously: "I went to her mom's church in Newark [N.J.] and I went to Denzel's church out here [in Los Angeles], and we auditioned choirs. I had never done anything with music of the current time, because most of the movies I did were period pictures. 'Awakenings' was, certainly 'A League of Their Own' was, and so was 'Riding in Cars With Boys.'"

Late singer takes centre stage in trailer for remake of Detroit-set 1976 film about Motown-era girl group
Whitney Houston's final film is advertised through a trailer in which the late singer frequently takes centre stage, despite ostensibly taking a supporting role in the musical.
Sparkle is a remake of the Detroit-set 1976 film of the same name, a personal favourite of Houston's. She plays the mother of three sisters in a 1960s Motown-era girl group who are seen dealing with the fallout of fame and drugs in a story which was inspired by the Supremes. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks (who plays the title character), Cee Lo Green, Mike Epps and Derek Luke also take starring roles.
In the trailer Houston is seen warning her daughters to learn from her character's own ill-fated brush with stardom. She appears in several scenes and even performs a solo number, the gospel song His Eye on the Sparrow. »

On February 11, we lost Whitney Houston, one of the great voices of the 20th century, but the "Bodyguard" star will take one final bow in the role she shot for the big razzle-dazzle remake of 1976 cult classic "Sparkle."
The 2012 version will hit theaters on August 17, but TriStar Pictures saw fit to debut some new footage from the trailer on "The Today Show" (via MSNBC), and just this small glimpse announces that her role as faded singer Emma will not only echo her own life struggles but could bring posthumous accolades to the most-awarded female singer of all-time.
Originally intended as a major comeback for the then 48-year-old Houston, who hadn't made a feature since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife," her character is a feisty, proper mother raising three daughters, including the Motown-inspired singing sensation of the title. Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, and lead Jordin Sparks all shine as the sexy trio, »

Have you ever thought about picking up a handsome stranger who shows up at your church picnic? No, not a handsome stranger who's visiting his dear aunt who goes to your church, just some dude who is staring you down at the park (in the dead of fall when it is way too cold to be having a picnic).
If you said "yes," you haven't seen Gospel of Deceit, a Lifetime movie from 2006. Within the first 15 minutes of the movie, a successful preacher and his wife have met a leather- and jean-jacketed young man, played softball with him, invited him to dinner, hired him on as their "handyman," and given him the keys to their church so he can sleep in the basement. What could go wrong?
Everything, of course. The preacher's wife, Emily, soon finds herself having dreams about the sexy stranger (not surprising, because she goes to bed wearing a silk nightie, »

Cindy Williams didn't doubt two of her best-known co-stars would become well-known filmmakers.
The actress played Ron Howard's girlfriend in the 1973 movie classic "American Graffiti," then worked with him again on the ABC sitcom "Happy Days" ... which yielded the hugely successful spinoff "Laverne & Shirley," teaming Williams with Penny Marshall. Still good friends, the women will reunite when their enduringly popular show gets the Fan Favorite honor at the TV Land Awards, to be televised by the nostalgia-driven network Sunday, April 29.
"Ron kept jumping out of the car during 'American Graffiti' and talking to Haskell Wexler, the cinematographer," Williams recalls to Zap2it about making the George Lucas-directed ode to teen life circa 1962. "He'd get back in the car -- we had no dressing rooms, so we'd sit in the car between takes -- and I'd ask him, 'What are you doing?' And he'd say, 'I'm »

Whitney Houston, the singer and actor who died earlier this month, is featured in the 2012 Oscar's In Memoriam section
Whitney Houston featured prominently in the In Memoriam section of the Academy Award ceremony currently taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Although best known as a musician, she made a respectable contribution to cinema, and in fact was preparing to release a film she produced and acted in before her death earlier this month.
Houston's main claim to movie immortality comes by way of her debut acting role, in the 1992 picture The Bodyguard. Starring opposite Kevin Costner, Houston did well as a musician who becomes romantically entangled with her security guard, though the character appeared similar to her real-life persona. A song on the film's soundtrack, a cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You, became a massive worldwide hit.
In 1995, Houston followed it up with Waiting to Exhale, »

Fox 2000 will press ahead with planned follow-up 'in honour' of late singer, who had been set to reprise role in 1995 tearjerker
A planned sequel to the 1995 romantic tearjerker Waiting to Exhale is to move ahead despite the death of Whitney Houston, who had been expected to reprise her role as one of four unlucky-in-love women living in Phoenix, Arizona.
Elizabeth Gabler, of Fox 2000, said the studio would continue production on the follow-up "in honour" of Houston, who died on Saturday in a Beverly Hills hotel room hours before a pre-Grammy awards party that she was due to attend.
Waiting to Exhale was based on the novel by Terry McMillan, and the sequel will draw on McMillan's new book Getting to Happy, which was published in 2010 and continues the story of the lovelorn characters from the earlier tome.
"It's almost in her honour that we think to soldier on," Gabler told the Vulture blog. »

I was fortunate enough to meet Whitney Houston at her career peak. It was late 1996, and she was promoting her forthcoming movie, "The Preacher's Wife." No one knew at the time that she was at her zenith, that her first tastes of failure were soon to follow, and that she was at the end of her glory years and at the beginning of a long, slow, sad decline from which she would never fully recover. When I interviewed her, there were only a few hints of the downward spiral she had already embarked upon. Years later, we would learn that she was already using drugs daily at this time, but I saw no sign of her dependency. The Houston I met lived up to her image as pop's serene, supreme majesty. She was regal and elegant. She sported a diamond ring the size of an ice rink. She hinted at »

Whitney Houston was "excited" to start work on a sequel to hit 1995 movie Waiting To Exhale and couldn't wait to reunite with her original castmates, according to her co-star Loretta Devine.
The late soul superstar died on Saturday in her suite at Los Angeles' Beverly Hilton hotel - just weeks after wrapping her movie comeback in Sparkle, her first film since starring in The Preacher's Wife in 1996.
Devine reveals she spoke to Houston recently and the singer couldn't wait to catch up with her Waiting To Exhale co-stars, including Angela Bassett and Lela Rochon, on the set of the second installment, which was due to begin shooting later this year.
And the actress has been left stunned by the unexpected tragedy.
Devine tells MTV.com, "I am overwhelmed. I cannot wrap my mind around this. I missed the chance to see her at a party this past Thursday and when we spoke last she had just finished Sparkle and she told me how excited she was to start production on Waiting to Exhale 2 with Angela, Lela and myself.
"My prayers go out to her family and I am so honoured for the time I spent working with her on Waiting to Exhale, The Preacher's Wife and on Boston Public. I love you, Whitney, and I will miss your easy laugh."
Bassett confirmed last year that a sequel to Waiting To Exhale, about the love lives of four female friends in Phoenix, Arizona, was in the works. It was based on Terry McMillan's 1992 book of the same name.
Forest Whitaker, who made his feature film directorial debut with the movie, was expected to return as director. »

Gathering momentum for this month's Oscars, black-and-white silent film The Artist last night won seven awards at Baftas 2012, one more than I had predicted.

The Leading Actress accolade went to Meryl Streep, who lost a shoe as she stepped on to the stage to pick up the prize for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. She revealed that her ancestors were - like Lady Thatcher herself - originally from Lincolnshire.
She said: "Half of me is Streep and the other half is Wilkinson from Lincolnshire so I come by it honestly, this part."

Singer recorded two songs for Sparkle, a remake of a 1976 movie intended to mark her return to the screen
Whitney Houston's final recordings will appear on the soundtrack to a forthcoming film. Houston recorded two songs for Sparkle, a remake of a 1976 movie intended to mark her return to acting.
The first of Houston's unreleased songs is Celebrate, written by R Kelly for the film's end credits. Houston also performed an onscreen duet with American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, who plays her character's daughter. According to Billboard, they sing a version of the gospel standard His Eyes on the Sparrow.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely passing of Whitney Houston," said Bishop Td Jakes, one of the film's producers. "We ask the world to join us in lifting up Whitney's family in prayer." Sparkle is scheduled to arrive in Us cinemas this August, and RCA will release the soundtrack. »
