Storyline

Melanie Parker, an architect and mother of Sammy, and Jack Taylor, a newspaper columnist and father of Maggie, are both divorced. They meet one morning when overwhelmed Jack is left unexpectedly with Maggie and forgets that Melanie was to take her to school. As a result, both children miss their school field trip and are stuck with the parents. The two adults project their negative stereotypes of ex-spouses on each other, but end up needing to rely on each other to watch the children as each must save his job. Humor is added by Sammy's propensity for lodging objects in his nose and Maggie's tendency to wander. Written by John H. Henderson <johnh@eng.auburn.edu>

Trivia

When Maggie Taylor forgets the kitten's name, it was not a part of the script. Mae Whitman actually forgot the kitten's name and stayed in character. The director thought that it was so cute that he kept it in the movie. See more »

Goofs

On the way to the soccer game, Jack is holding Melanie and stomping in the puddles. His pants are wet and discolored to above his knees. Yet when they arrive at the soccer game (assume within minutes) and Maggie hands him her back pack to hold, his pants are dry and there is no discoloration. See more »

Quotes

Marla: I didn't know you had a daughter! She looks just like you!
Jack Taylor: Yeah, well, with any luck she'll grow out of it.

How this film should be appreciated
8 March 2004 | by See all my reviews

This film is one of my favorites. I absolutely love it. I'm not entirely sure why i just find it really sweet and the two stars are both perfectly charming throughout. I used to have this on in the background whenever I did homework. Maybe I was just at that age when I was starting to appreciate romance when I saw it in the cinema (3 times) but I still feel this is one of the best romantic comedies I've ever seen and would definately recommend it to anyone. It's a great shame that a gem like this is so underrated. ALL of the acting is suberb. George clooney is entertaining as always in this film he made whilst it was still being debated as to whether he could transcend tv and become a movie star.
