Interview: Sir Ben Kingsley Always Steering in ‘Learning to Drive’

  • HollywoodChicago.com
Chicago – The presence of Sir Ben Kingsley – yes, he was knighted in his native Britain – is the first thing that commands a room. The regal and precise actor, who was awarded an Best Actor Oscar for his definitive performance in “Gandhi,” is back portraying a native of India in his latest film, “Learning to Drive.”

The film is a transition story for the two main characters. Darwan (Kingsley) is a Indian Sikh who gained political asylum in America shortly before September 11th. He is a driving instructor, and encounters a new student in Wendy (Patricia Clarkson). The woman is going through a bitter divorce, and is using the potential of learning to drive to gain more freedom. The two disparate souls help each other in essential ways, and at the same time weather the storm of some extreme life changes.

Top Ten Tuesday – The Best Substitutes for Downton Abbey

By rights I should hate the English. Seriously, my background is almost entirely Scots and Irish. I grew up hearing about the troubles the English gave to the Scots and Irish, both in school and from my parents.

Yet I do not, I love the English. How can I hate a country that gave us not only Monty Python but also Benny Hill and the Carry On Films? How can I bear any ill will to a country that gave us writers of the caliber of Ramsey Campbell, Brian Aldiss, Michael Moorcock and J. G Ballard? How can anyone hate a country that not only prizes eccentric behavior but encourages it? Take Mr. Kim Newman for instance, a brilliant writer whose work appears regularly in Video WatchDog and Videoscope Mr. Newman dresses himself, has his hair and mustache styled and speaks in the manner of someone from the 19th Century!

Exodus: Gods And Kings Blu-Ray Review

People often talk about over-hyped and under-hyped films, and with good reason, but when a film strikes you as getting exactly the right amount of hype, it’s rare indeed. This is exactly where Exodus: Gods and Kings seems to fall. It’s a film that seems like it should have gotten more attention, especially considering the cast, and the fact that it was directed by Ridley Scott.

It turns out that the film, while actually quite good, delivers to precisely the level of interest the world seems to have dictated is its due.

A thematically unique spin on this, or any other, biblical telling, Exodus starts us off with Moses (Christian Bale) in the prime of his Egyptian Prince-ish-hood. He’s about to take care of some upstart tribe or other with his “brother” Ramses (Joel Edgerton), and a prophecy kicks off Ramses’ dislike of the man he has

Director Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings starring Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, Aaron Paul and Ben Kingsley will make its Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD debut on a release date of March 17, 2015.

Exodus: Gods and Kings is based on the story of Moses and his rise against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses. In an unusual marketing move, Fox is pushing the Blu-ray 3D version of Exodus: Gods and Kings in a collector's edition set that includes exclusive supplemental material not found on the standard Blu-ray combo pack. Exodus: Gods and Kings movie review: whites only

Simultaneously the dullest and the most insulting version of itself it could possibly be. If only it had managed to be campy, that’d be something… I’m “biast” (pro): have been a fan of Ridley Scott in the past…

I’m “biast” (con): …but not so much lately

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I think I’ve finally figured out what Exodus: Gods and Kings is all about. I don’t mean how it’s a painfully boring, too-literal adaptation of a Biblical fantasy that’s been told plenty often before, and was not calling out to be told again. I mean how it’s possible that Ridley Scott could have made such a stodgy flick, and one that’s utterly tone-deaf to modern sensibilities. Cuz Scott used to be ahead of the curve, not decades behind it: This is the guy who

Sons of Anarchy Recap: Eye for an Eye
Anytime you’re watching Sons of Anarchy — especially this final, gruesome season — you’ve got to prepare yourself for a few casualties. It’s just par for the course with the FX drama, which has racked up an impressive body count in the past six episodes alone.

But there are some Sons characters you just hope will never be in the line of fire, and when they are, it’s all you can do to remember that this is a work of fiction.

This week, I’m of course talking about Bobby, who found himself caught in the crosshairs of an outraged August Marks.

Trailer & Posters For Ridley Scott’s Biblical ‘Exodus: Gods And Kings’ Unleashed

After a very disappointing collaboration with novelist Cormac McCarthy on The Counsellor last year, Ridley Scott is back to his epic ways of film-making with Exodus: Gods And Kings. Starring Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton, the film is based on the exodus of The Israelites from Egypt led by Moses, and it also relates to The Old Testament Book Of Exodus.

From what the trailer shows, Ridley Scott seems to be on very firm ground as he dramatises the battle between Moses and Ramses II. Christian Bale dons an impressive beard as he plays Moses, while The Great Gatsby’s Joel Edgerton makes an astonishing transformation as Ramses II and with no Whitney Huston-esque soundtrack in sight though like 1998′s The Prince Of Egypt – which is probably a good thing!

Here’s that trailer and scroll down for the posters – which may need a little work before the film is

First Trailer for "Exodus: Gods and Kings!" See Christian Bale as Moses!

Finally, the first trailer for Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings" is here, and boy oh boy, it promises to be epic! Like Cecil B. DeMille epic! Like a gargantuan "Gladiator!"

Take a look at the Red Sea parting! Listen to the cover of Simple Minds' "Belfast Child!" It's all glorious!

The film brings back to mind Darren Aronofsky's "Noah," but then again, did anyone see the movie? Hopefully, "Exodus" will not suffer the same fate so have faith all ye heathen!

In this adaptation, Christian Bale stars as Moses who dukes it out with Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton barely recognizable) so he can free the slaves and escape Egypt's plagues. So "Ten Commandments" here we come! But, according to Bale, there will be shocking stuff so Scott and company may be a bit liberal in adding or subtracting passages from the bible. Yup, just like "Noah.

Holy Moses! Christian Bale gets biblical in Exodus: Gods and Kings trailer

  • Cineplex
2014 is the year of the Bible. After March’s Flood tale Noah saw a drenched Russell Crowe and Emma Watson fight for survival, another story from the Old Testament is parting the Red Sea and heading to theatres in December.

Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings sees Christian Bale as Moses squaring off against his adopted brother Ramses played by an unrecognizable Joel Edgerton. The 3D film covers the familiar story of the brothers-turned-enemies as Moses rises up against the Pharaoh Ramses in his quest to set 600,000 slaves free while the deadly plagues rain down on Egypt.

Edgerton gives his best Yul Brenner impression while a bearded Bale shows he’s adept at riding a horse and wielding a sword in the heat of battle. The trailer certainly gives new meaning to the term “epic” and is exactly what we have come to expect from the director of Gladiator and Prometheus.

Video: Christian Bale fights a biblical battle in 'Exodus: Gods and Kings' trailer
We’ve seen director Ridley Scott do the whole swords-and-sandals thing before, in 2000′s Gladiator, but now he’s going even further back in time with Exodus: Gods and Kings.

Christian Bale plays a pre-Ten Commandments Moses, going head-to-head with Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton) to free hundreds of thousands of slaves. Watch the first trailer for the biblical epic below:

Bale told EW’s Sara Vilkomerson that he wasn’t trying to be the second coming of Charlton Heston in the movie. “Charlton Heston does Charlton Heston better than anyone,” he said. “But the biblical account of Moses is extraordinary,
