Hit-man Michael Madsen involved with bad and good twins, Jennifer Tilly, while Gary Busey fumes
18 April 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Man with a Gun" (1995) is a neo-noir. The acting is good and is the main attraction, apart from decent genre atmosphere and jazzy music. Jennifer Tilly plays twins. One's nice, the other's an extreme femme fatale. She does a good job making them different, although she has little to work with script-wise for the good one. Michael Madsen can act, as one can tell by comparing the character he projects here with his other work. He is a strong screen presence. Gary Busey is always worth watching too.

The big letdown in this movie is the below-par script and/or story, which is underdeveloped, making it come across abrupt and cartoonish and really a caricature of noir. The characters do not seem all that real; they seem like caricatures. This is the case with Busey's nephew played by Ian Tracey and the top gangster played by Robert Loggia. Going back to the old days of films, the sole black man in the film (Bill Cobbs) is predictably a disposable victim.

There's a torture scene that's probably too extended and brutal that seems out of place in this kind of film. There's a machine gunning fight that also seems unreal and out of place.

A strong director might have made something out of this. It seems quite clear that far from adequate direction was another central reason why this movie doesn't live up to its potential.
