When I started watching this short (it showed up serendipitously on HBO), I thought I was in for one of those "I can't believe how wasted I got last night" stories. You know, the type of tale told on Monday mornings to co-workers, usually containing a certain amount of bravado and pride at the copious amounts consumed.

This film begins like one of these stories, but shows us everything, including the embarrassing parts usually left out by the teller. "Man About Town" manages to be both funny (very!) and truthful as it follows the protagonist and narrator (Matt Gunn, who wrote the film) through a long night of drinking. I won't divulge any details of the story, but I will say the details are right on target. The film is beautifully shot in gritty black and white, with expressive acting from the characters (the entire film is narrated, so there is no audible dialogue). The jazzy soundtrack is also quite good.

I strongly believe this short film should be required viewing for high school and college students, who may be just starting to explore the drinking lifestyle. Might I also add that it is very entertaining to one who has left that lifestyle behind.
