Alec Baldwin pressures juror Demi Moore to acquit mob boss Tony Lo Bianco
13 May 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Juror" (1996) is a well above-average neo-noir thriller featuring a great performance by Alec Baldwin and a strong supporting cast. We've seen lots of psychopathic killers on screen, but Baldwin's character is so very well-written that it is fresh and surprises us. There is one inspired sequence that's worth the price of admission alone and elevates this film. It's when he drives a car with Moore as passenger and makes believe that he's the drunken Rodney (Matthew Cowles). But every actor in this film makes an impression, and that's a sign of good writing and direction. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Moore's teen son, a substantial early part for him. Anne Heche is Moore's doctor friend. James Gandolfini is a sympathetic mob guy who works with Baldwin. Tony Lo Bianco is the mob boss on trial. Michael Constantine is the presiding judge. Lindsay Crouse appears as a federal agent. Matt Craven is a friend of Moore.

The film shows how the jury system can be corrupted. When Crouse suspects this and swings into action, we see how police can exploit the very vulnerable position of people threatened by mobsters.

The story is balanced between the psychological and some action, most of which is within bounds so as to maintain the feeling of reality. This movie stands out from the crowd and at its current IMDb rating of 5.6 is underrated, in my opinion.
