Who's The Right One?

Remake of an oldie. The original starred Robert Mitchum, I believe. Lemme check... yup, and Janet Leigh. I really had no idea who the female lead was but ya know what, it doesn't matter, different movie and from 47 years prior to this one. The whole time watching this one, well, when David Elliot was on screen, I kept picturing the wonderful Robert Mitchum, his look and mannerisms and distinctive voice. Mr. Elliot might be good on TV's Jag but he'll never be of Robert Mitchum caliber. Kind of made me wonder: Why even bother replicating a role Mr. Mitchum first had? Even though this wasn't that bad, there's no no no way it could compare to Mitchum and Leigh. So, I had to just take it for what it was. Cynthia Gibb was the widowed mom and the whole romance thing worked out in the end. Ooops, did I give it away? Uh, like who wouldn't figure it out? Not a surprise at all in this, sadly. The kid was pretty good, though, and in addition there was generally good acting all around. Was this a Christmas movie or just a movie that took place around Christmastime? Certainly didn't leave me feeling really good and warm and fuzzy about the season and the holiday. This was more of a romance and Christmas didn't have much to do with it! Few script changes and this story could have taken place anytime. Whatever, this wasn't anything outstanding and worth a `10' but it was alright. My grade: C+
