Clip joint: cinema's most unusual weapons

12 June 2013 4:25 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Five of the most unconventional armaments featured in films. Can you think of any others?

This week's Clip joint is by Ruth Sloss, who blogs about film at What Movie This Week. If you've got an idea for a future clip joint, drop an email to adam.boult@guardian.co.uk.

Please note that some of these clips feature very adult scenes of violence.

Hollywood is rife with run-of-the-mill weaponry. Colt 45 pistols, sawn-off shotguns, knives, Ak-47's, bazookas… yawn. The truly imaginative cinematic killer eschews the off-the-peg option for something more bespoke. These weapons can be truly terrifying, a visual representation of the warped mind of the psychopath. They can be so Ott they're silly, appealing to the kid in us who ran round the school playground wielding sticks as light sabres. Or they can be downright surreal. Often they're scene stealers, frequently becoming synonymous with both the film »

Watch: Robert Rodriguez Puts Latina Aliens In Harm's Way

7 June 2013 3:41 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Has director Robert Rodriguez made a sci-fi parable about undocumented Hispanics?

His short "Two Scoops" hit the Internet recently (watch above), with twins Electra and Elise Avellan playing ice cream servers on a rocky road to finding their missing dad.

"We're not from here," the two are fond of saying in their Spanish accents. And we soon discover just how far-flung they are when these badass aliens (nudge nudge, wink wink) fight a monster to get to the truth.

"This is not a movie," declares one of the girls about halfway through the 11-minute film. Unfortunately, some YouTube viewers agreed.

"This hurt me to watch," wrote one viewer.

Rodriguez ("Sin City," "SpyKids," "From Dusk Till Dawn") made the featurette as part of the Keep Moving project with BlackBerry 10. Fans filled in a few plot points as part of the promotion.

As of Friday evening, the 10-minute film had collected about »

Comcast’s Latino Network Taps Rodriguez And Orci For Latin Bond

6 June 2013 10:13 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

You know what culture isn’t associated with spies, mostly because the Cold War didn’t touch them as heavily as say, Nazi communications into Mexico brought them into WWII? That’s right, the Hipanic/Latin/Mexican culture. Outside of the El Mariachi trilogy (and upcoming 2nd Machete movie) produced and directed by Robert Rodriguez, most of the spy games have been Spanish-Language films made F.U.B.U. (For Us By Us – Fyi). I’m not saying it’s a bad idea to have spies from all cultures, I’m saying I see where the impetus to want one comes from.

Robert Rodriguez Sets Up From Dusk Till Dawn and a Latino James Bond TV Series

6 June 2013 9:20 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Former guerrilla filmmaker wunderkind and Austinite Robert Rodriguez is getting into the TV business. The writer/director/producer/caterer of the “El Mariachi”, “Spy Kids”, and “Machete” franchises is setting up a new TV network with Comcast called the El Rey Network, and he’s already slotted two new shows for the fledgling enterprise. Up first will be a TV series based on Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “From Dusk Till Dawn” series. The original movie centered on two criminal brothers who go on the lam in Texas, only to end up in a bar full of vampires. The film starred Tarantino and George Clooney, and spawned a couple of low-budget direct-to-dvd sequels. No word on what the TV series will follow, but it should stick pretty closely to the first movie, I would assume. The sequels were, well, they were direct-to-dvd, so that should say something. 10 Irresistible Quentin Tarantino Spin-Offs That Definitely Deserve To Be Made

2 June 2013 3:22 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

I love Quentin Tarantino. He makes over-the-top, fun homages to classic genre movies. They’re modern-day pulps thrown up on the big screen instead of the cheap paper of old and tailored for a modern audience. His writing is snappy and his characters never fail to entertain. And no one can doubt the man’s enthusiasm for his work.

We’ve seen Tarantino reference his other films constantly. In Reservoir Dogs, there’s a reference to Mr. White’s former partner, Alabama, who was one of the main characters in the Tarantino-written True Romance. Another True Romance connection comes from movie producer Lee Donowitz, the same name as Inglourious Basterd Donny Donowitz, a.k.a. the Bear Jew. In Pulp Fiction, Mia Wallace describes a pilot she made called Fox Force Five, which sounds pretty similar to The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad from Kill Bill (and both Mia and the »

The James Clayton Column: Vampires will never bore you

29 May 2013 2:36 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Feature James Clayton 31 May 2013 - 06:26

Has Twilight left us with vampire fatigue? As Byzantium emerges, James argues that there are plenty of stories left to tell in the lore...

Remember the My Chemical Romance song, Vampires Will Never Bore You? You probably don't because that wasn't the actual title of the track. Nevertheless, there's no reason why the theatrical rock troupe can't remix Vampires Will Never Hurt You with revised, more upbeat lyrics for a new cultural zeitgeist in order to assist the ailing undead.

The coffin-dwellers are suffering a public image crisis and an exhilarating, affirmative pop anthem would be the perfect thing to rally spirits. It might also attract armies of impassioned, hyper-emotional adolescents going through their teen goth rebellion phase. A mass macabre awareness campaign is called for and the vampires need fresh blood and fresh resolve to bare their fangs with fierce determination.

Why do they need this? »

Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Net Courts Viewers From Dusk ’Til Dawn

The El Rey Network, the cable startup from Robert Rodriguez and John Fogelman’s FactoryMade Ventures, is speeding toward its soft launch in December, bolstered by a strategic partnership with Spanish-lingo giant Univision Communications.

Univision has made an equity investment in the English-lingo cabler that is aimed at young adult auds. Much of the programming will have appeal to Latinos, but the goal is to target a broader urban demographic with a mix of reality, scripted and animated skeins, movies, music and sports programming — including the colorful wrestlers of Mexico’s Lucha Libre league. Univision will handle the back-office operations, sales and distribution of the network.

The Univision partnership came on the heels of the news that former Hearst Entertainment exec Scott Sassa was signing on as vice chairman of El Rey, helping to steer day-to-day operations.

Horror Anthology 'The ABCs Of Death' To Get A Sequel

There are 26 letters in the English alphabet, but there are going to be two movies about "The ABCs of Death." A sequel to the creepy anthology is on the way, and filmmakers are promising a leaner and meaner set of horrors. You remember how this works: each director creates a short based on a theme related to a letter of the alphabet, and of course, death. Alex de la Iglesia ("The Last Circus"), Rodney Ascher ("Room 237"), and Academy Award-nominated animator Bill Plympton have already signed on to direct, plus there will be another competition to find the 26th filmmaker. The sequel is planned for a 2014 release, so you have plenty of time to break out your camera and get to work.

It looks like the bloodsuckers of True Blood and The Vampire Diaries will be getting some competition on the small screen. We've already seen the first trailer for NBC's upcoming 10-part Dracula 'retelling' earlier this week, and now Deadline has revealed that Robert Rodriguez's El Ray Network is to partner up with Univision Networks for a TV series based upon From Dusk Till Dawn.
