Who will join the long list of MTV breakthrough performers this year? Your guess is as good as ours as this category will be decided by a group of established directors rather than by public voting. Here's a closer look at the 2012 crop of nominees which are diverse as »

Gary Oldman as Jackie Flannery in State Of Grace (Phil Joanou, 1990, USA):
Long considered one of the most talented actors in cinema, it’s very strange that his outstanding acting as the younger brother of Ed Harris’ local crime boss in this underrated film doesn’t get talked about nearly enough when discussing Oldman’s body of work. This is a must-see performance for all Oldman fans. For the record, State Of Grace is a far better Irish mob film than The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006, USA), primarily because it contains much better acting across the board. Oldman was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Tomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/France).
Other notable Gary Oldman performances: Prick Up Your Ears (Stephen Frears, 1987, USA), Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992, USA), True Romance (Tony Scott, 1993, USA), Leon: The Professional (Luc Besson, 1994, France), Air Force One (Wolfgang Petersen, 1997, USA), The Contender (Rod Lurie, »

The imminent release of Strippers Vs Werewolves prompts James to consider the hairy problems that life as a werewolf might cause...
This week marks the arrival of a major cinematic crossover event. Cinemagoers are drooling at the prospect of this epic pop culture clash, and I’m sure that thousands of pairs of underpants have been messed up in anticipation of the movie that’s now been unleashed on audiences.
I’m talking, of course, about Strippers Vs Werewolves, which I suppose is the kinky British bargain bin alternative to the Marvel costumed hero ensemble piece orchestrated by Joss Whedon. If you don’t like the look of The Avengers (a.k.a. Avengers Assemble) you can go for a flick that promises titillation and mild terror instead.
(For the record, if you have no desire to see The Avengers and aren’t interested in the all-out geek-gasm and cultural milestone it represents, »

To continue on with my recent ‘behind the scenes’ fascination, I’ve been digging up what I think are the best documentaries hidden on the special features menus across the dvd world. Most of what you’ll find in those supplements are the Electronic Press Kit docus that are there to fluff up the release and add content. Basically you get a fifteen minute HBO Making Of… special that is more about inflating egos than getting into what really happens on the set. When you do find a little film out there that goes a little further, damn it, we have to embrace it.
Instead of showcasing the film’s stars, Full Tilt Boogie follows the assistants and the crew, and while that might not make this the most Hollywood of pieces, it definitely makes for an eye opening flick. It’s not normal that »

Josh Hartnett has left CAA, and he has been making the rounds of agencies looking for new representation. Even though they might be unexcited by his recent movies like Bunraku and Girl Walks Into A Bar, the agencies are all over him. Who can blame them? This is a strapping young guy who can act and is only 33. I thought he was going to be a big star when he made Pearl Harbor and especially Black Hawk Down. While occasional films reminded of his potential — how great was Hartnett in 30 Days Of Night, maybe the coolest vampire movie since From Dusk Till Dawn? – for the most part he has leaned toward indie, artsy fare. I can still remember in the early 2000s when Hartnett was offered the Superman role by Warner Bros in a three-picture deal that potentially could have paid him $100 million. He turned it down because he didn »

Everyone loves a bad boy. The snarling mustache twirlers get all of the fame and fortune -- the No. 1 spot on movie-geek lists, the Halloween costumes, the cool quotes -- and none of them have to worry about being called a witch.
But here at NextMovie, we're all about the bad girls. We love a lady who isn't afraid to embrace her nasty side in order to get what she wants.
In honor of "Mirror Mirror" and its fairest (evil) queen of all, we've gathered up the coolest and cruelest women to grace the silver screen. We're a little worried about ranking them, because if there's one thing we know about these vicious villainesses, it's that they don't like competition. But we did. Now, you read. We'll run.

Texas-based independent filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (naturally) showed up at the South by Southwest (SXSW) 2012 Film Festival, where – in addition to performing a handful of tunes from the original soundtracks for his films like Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Machete – he revealed that he is launching a new animation company called Quickdraw Animation, which will specialize in CG-animated fare, ranging from family-friendly flicks to a long-planned Heavy Metal movie.
However, the “big” news (as far as many Rodriguez fans are concerned) that the filmmaker had to offer is that he intends to begin shooting the long-delayed Sin City 2 later this year, after completing production on the sequel, Machete Kills.
When word got out earlier this year that Rodriguez’ next directorial effort is going to be a Machete sequel, many ...

For those unfamiliar with Alan Wake, can you give us a run down about what the franchise is and the ideas behind it?
Alan Wake is a psychological action thriller, a story driven experience. Alan Wake is a writer who has writer’s block, and in a hope to get back his creative flow, his wife Alice takes him away to the beautiful town of Bright Falls. But shortly after their arrival she goes missing without a trace and Wake finds himself trapped in a nightmare. Worst of all this thriller novel he doesn’t even remember writing is coming true before his eyes, word for word.
So, as it’s a psychological action thriller, we’re inspired by Stephen King, David Lynch, Paul Auster, various graphic novels and TV series...we take our inspirations from popular culture. There are very strong elements of light and darkness throughout the story »

In Cold Blood and Goodfellas used the trunk shot to their advantage, but the one director who has made it his calling card is Quentin Tarantino. The Pulp Fiction filmmaker's trademark Pov angle has appeared in all of the director's biggest films — including Jackie Brown, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, From Dusk Till Dawn, and more. Video wizard kogognada (of Breaking Bad Pov video montage fame) created another great supercut, which shows just how often Tarantino's camera looks up at his characters. Check it below. [BuzzFeed] Warning: Nsfw due to language. When two buddies start a friendly game of ping-pong, things quickly turn violent. We're not just talking John McEnroe foul-mouthed kind of aggressive; we're talking lightning speed fireballs and...

Gary Collinson with a selection of star names who made an early 'before they were famous' appearance in The X-Files...
Over the past few months I’ve been revisiting Chris Carter’s classic science fiction TV series The X-Files on DVD and besides jogging my memory as to just how good of a pairing David Duchovny’s Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully made, I’ve found myself surprised at the number of famous faces who’ve cropped up across the series’ nine-season run.
Now I’m not talking about those guest stars who were already firmly established (or pretty much on their way) by the time they made an appearance – the likes of Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead), Brad Dourif (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket), David Faustino (Married… with Children), Terry O’Quinn (The Stepfather), Burt Reynolds (Deliverance), Kurtwood Smith »

In anticipation of Season 6 of Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures", we continue our in-depth interview with frontman Zak Bagans (read Part One here). In this installment we go back to one of the crew's most challenging haunts, Bobby Mackey's Music World (Season 1, Episode 1; Season 4, Episode 3), to talk about how it affected them.
"When we went to Bobby Mackey's in Season 1, I was a idiot," says Bagans, candidly reflecting on the horrors that followed. "I didn’t understand too much of this yet. Let me be honest with you... we’ve grown a lot since then, and when we went there, I did something really stupid. What happened there didn’t really have an effect on me when I left. It wasn’t until we went back there for an event where we invited a hundred people back to join us on a hunt. Obviously since we are experiencing »

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, it's a good time to look at the kinds of hearts we like best -- those that still beat as they're ripped from steaming chest cavities. There are many such scenes in movie history, from Dreamscape to Last of the Mohicans to From Dusk Till Dawn. But, after the jump, check out my picks for the Top 5 Heart Removal Scenes in Movies. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) Let's start with the elephant in the room. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom may not be grisliest, the goriest or the scariest heart removal scene of all time, but it's certainly the most significant.
