The Amazing Race: Which Films Came Out Of Cannes As Potential Oscar Contenders?

1 June 2012 10:09 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Gosh, it feels like only yesterday we were talking about the 2011 Oscar season, with films like "The Artist," "Hugo," "The Descendants," "The Help" and "Moneyball" jostling for position in the chase for little gold statues. And that's because, well, it basically was yesterday: we're only a little over three months since Oscar season wrapped up. But time marches on, and with the arrival of the Cannes Film Festival, we've got some of the first indications of what might come into play in the awards season by the end of this year.

Last year, after all, saw the emergence of "The Artist" on the Croisette, a film that virtually no one was aware of before, but was swiftly picked up the Weinstein Brothers, became a crowd-pleaser, and went on to become an awards season juggernaut, winning Best Picture, Director and Actor. Palme d'Or winner "The Tree of Life" and Woody Allen »

Cannes Report: Chris Tucker Dials It Back, Jennifer Lawrence Impresses In First Footage From 'Silver Linings Playbook'

21 May 2012 2:16 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Sandwiched between Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook" was the oddball of The Weinstein Company presentation this evening at the Cannes Film Festival. Not that there's anything wrong with it specifically, but just coming in the middle of two much more ambitious, auteur driven movies, only emphasized just how...ordinary and run-of-the-mill Russell's film felt.

Based on the book by Matthew Quick, the story centers on Pat Peoples (a tracksuit and Philadelphia Eagles jersey-wearing Bradley Cooper), a former high school teacher who, after being released from a four-year stint in a mental institution, moves back in with his mother, then seeks to put his life back together. The trailer evoked the feel of Russell's "Flirting With Disaster," with a similar quirky-family vibe, with Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver both solid, if not memorable. However, Jennifer Lawrence »

SNL: With a Cameo Appearance by Josh Brolin!

16 April 2012 1:17 AM, PDT | TV.com | See recent TV.com news »

Last week I worried whether SNL would properly put Sofia Vergara's ample comedic talents to good use. This week I worried whether Josh Brolin had Any comedic talents to lend whatsoever. While he's definitely appeared in hilarious things before.from the overtly funny Flirting with Disaster to the campy Planet Terror and unintentionally hilarious Jonah Hex.let's face it: Brolin's performances really only range from serious to Deadly Serious. I mean, that's the...  More >> »

David O. Russell Set to Give Us Some Good Ol' Fashion 'American Bullsh*t'

22 March 2012 2:25 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Flirting with Disaster remains one of my favorite movies even to this day.  Not only would I say it’s a high water mark in Ben Stiller’s career, but the movie had this level of absurdist comedy that wasn’t too over the top yet wasn’t afraid to push the envelope just a bit.  Seeing that movie was the first time I was exposed to David O. Russell, who doesn’t have a huge film resume but with the exception of I Heart Huckabee’s, it’s pretty outstanding. »

Tea Leoni interview: Tower Heist, Brett Ratner, Deep Impact and Jurassic Park III

13 March 2012 7:25 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

What’s it like to work with Brett Ratner? Why is Alan Alda scary? And why was Jurassic Park III quite so special for her? Tea Leoni has been giving us some answers…

It was very early in the morning, Us time, when I was connected to Tea Leoni to have a natter about the DVD and Blu-ray release of Tower Heist. It was mid-afternoon in the UK, and I’d had the benefit of many coffees. Tea Leoni, I suspect, had not, as she reminded me several times during our chat that it was very early.

But it didn’t affect, or didn’t seem to, what she was talking about. And it turned out to be a really interesting chat, not least when we got around to her thoughts on Jurassic Park III. Here’s how it went…

I’ve just been watching the deleted scenes from Tower Heist, »

Walking Dead Recap: No Guts, No Glory

4 March 2012 7:38 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

If you haven’t yet watched Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead, you may wanna put off reading this recap until after you have. The rest of you, onward lurch!

At the end of a tense Walking Dead in which viewers were led at every turn to believe that Rick was going to execute captive Randall, it turned out to be Dale who actually bit the dust – and in most gruesome fashion. Here’s how it all went down:

Trigger-unhappy | Though Dale spent most of the episode campaigning for the gang to spare Randall, he was only able to win over… »

Blu-ray Review: Stellar Ensemble Elevates Relatively Routine ‘Tower Heist’

29 February 2012 10:51 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Brett Ratner’s “Tower Heist” features a Lot of actors who have proven talents but haven’t made the best career decisions of late. The number of disappointing films that star Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, and Tea Leoni could fill a film festival in Hell. And Ratner has committed his own crimes against celluloid. So, I was dreading “Tower Heist.” There’s nothing to dread here. It’s a mediocre comedy that sometimes even rises above that by virtue of its strong pacing and game ensemble. It’s no classic but it’s surprisingly enjoyable at times, only really falling apart in the final, ludicrous act.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Trying to make a star-studded ensemble heist comedy a la “Ocean’s 11” that uses the current financial crisis as its background was actually a pretty clever idea. What if Danny Ocean’s team could take down Bernie Madoff? Or, even better, »

Ben Stiller and ‘Extremely Loud’ Writer Jonathan Safran Foer to Team for HBO Comedy ‘All Talk’, Alan Alda in Talks

24 January 2012 9:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] HBO has developed quite a reputation for attracting high-profile, high-quality talent, with the likes of Steve Buscemi and Dustin Hoffman leading shows on the network, and now they've brought on one of their biggest names yet. Ben Stiller has signed on to star, direct, and executive produce All Talk, a comedy from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, with Alan Alda in talks to co-star. Scott Rudin is set to executive produce with Foer, Stiller, and Eli Bush. More details after the jump. Deadline [2] reports that All Talk will be a "politically, religiously, culturally, intellectually and sexually irreverent" series centered around a Jewish family living in Washington, D.C. The series marks Stiller's return to the small screen, where he got his start on The Ben Stiller Show and other series. Although Stiller has continued to appear on television as a guest star on shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, »

Ben Stiller to Star, Direct, and Produce HBO Comedy Pilot All Talk, Written by Jonathan Safran Foer; Alan Alda in Talks to Co-Star

23 January 2012 7:57 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Ben Stiller and HBO clearly want to work together.  Word of a David O. Selznick biopic Stiller wants to produce (and possibly star in) surfaced in October.  That may still be in the early stages, but THR reported on a separate project that Stiller is more directly, more officially involved in.  Stiller has signed on to executive produce, direct, and star in the comedy pilot All Talk, scripted by Jonathan Safran Foer, the writer behind the novel Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.  The potential series is described as a "politically, religiously, culturally, intellectually, and sexually irreverent" look at a Jewish family in Washington DC.  Alan Alda is in talks to co-star in what would be his first regular series role since M*A*S*H.  My best guess says Alda and Stiller will play father and son---sounds fantastic on paper.  The pair previously worked together on Tower Heist and Flirting with Disaster. »
